Chapter 7: An Unseen Danger

1080 Words
Sofia got to the cafe early the next morning, right as the sun was coming up. The smooth counters were covered in lengthy shadows from the gentle golden light that came in through the windows. She felt a brief moment of peace. Something stayed just out of her grasp, a heaviness in the air she couldn't get rid of. While gazing out at the peaceful street, she poured herself a cup of coffee. Today there was none of the usual noise of early risers. There was an odd silence in its place. She was startled out of her thoughts by the ringing of the doorbell. Zhybrix was the one. For a moment, she forgot her discomfort and smiled. Her heart was pounding because of the tightness in his posture as he entered with his usual calm grace. His eyes scanned the cafe with a sharpness she had never seen before, and he nodded gently as he went by. As she made his coffee, Sofia tried to sound casual when she said, "You're here early." Zhybrix answered in a weak voice, "Business." She felt the weight of it, even though his gaze was on her for only a little moment. "Have you been safe?" Knowing that it wasn't about her morning ritual, she tensed up a little. "Safe enough. Why?” She told a lie. Zhybrix lowered his voice and leaned in. “Something new happened. Someone is observing. I need you to stay careful.” A shiver went down Sofia's back. She couldn't tell whether the genuine concern in Zhybrix's voice or the uneasiness from earlier was causing her stomach to turn. "Who?" She asked, trying to keep up a calm tone. He paused, then let out a breath. "I’m not sure yet. Whoever it is, they know too much," “And they are also approaching too closely.” The door creaked open once again before Sofia could reply. A tall, broad-shouldered man walked into the cafe. Sofia's stomach fell when his gaze instantly fell on Zhybrix. She felt uneasy because of something in his eyes, a mixture of threat and familiarity. "Everything all right, boss?" The man asked in a rough voice. Zhybrix nodded gently, but his gaze returned to Sofia. "Stay alert. I'll take care of this." When Zhybrix approached the man, Sofia's heartbeat raced. She couldn't get rid of the feeling that everything was changing around her and that she was unable to stop it. As the day went on, the streets outside were starting to come alive, but Sofia no longer felt safe. She made an effort to put her mind on the job at hand, but the constant feeling of being watched continued. The shadows appeared to stay in place longer than they should, and she glimpsed faces she didn't recognize. There were more people watching her than before, therefore she wasn't dreaming. There were Zhybrix's guys everywhere. Now she could see them, standing in the crowd outside the cafe. Even though they were silent, their presence was noticeable, and their gaze never left her. In an attempt to relieve her growing anxiety, Sofia entered the back of the cafe. She closed her eyes and leaned against the counter. She opened them and found a figure standing in the doorway. The guy from earlier. He stood quietly, staring at her. Something about him broke at the back of her mind, a disturbing familiarity. "May I assist you?" She asked. Trying to look less nervous than she actually was. At first, he didn't respond. Rather, a little smile curved his lips. He said in a quiet, barely whispery voice, "Just keeping an eye on things." Sofia felt a shock of panic at what the man had said. He was not simply an observer. He was involved in whatever was going on, so Zhybrix wasn't the only one with a secret to keep safe. The man turned and left before she could reply, leaving Sofia with more questions than answers. ————————————————————— Soon after, Zhybrix returned, his presence as powerful as ever. His usual self-assurance, however, seems strained today. He glanced around the room, pausing for a moment on Sofia. "Is everything alright?" He asked, but it was obvious from his tone that he was already expecting a response. After thinking, Sofia nodded. “Yes. Just... Today is unusual. I feel it.” His jaw tightened as he observed her for a time. "They have taken action. It won't be long until they make another.” A wave of fear swept through Sofia. "What happens then?" His voice was cold and unwavering as he said, "We fight back." However, Sofia was aware that there was more to it. His remarks carried weight, a threat that was hidden beneath the surface. It wasn't only Zhybrix who was in danger. It was for both of them. The morning's calmness had vanished. There was no going back as the storm drew closer. She just wasn't sure if she was prepared for the next step. When Zhybrix's sharp and intense gaze met Sofia's, she stood still. He seemed to be able to read her mind and sense her confusion and fear. His voice was a light murmur as he leaned in. "They are after me, Sofia. But they are also after you. I want you to be careful. Keep close to my men. Don't go anywhere alone." Sofia felt her heart thumping in her chest. "What are you saying? Who are they? What's happening?" Zhybrix's expression hardened as he added, "It doesn't matter." "They made a threat. And they won't give up until they fulfill what they want." He breathed deeply. "I need you to understand, Sofia…your world and mine are about to come together." With the weight of Zhybrix's words pressing down on her chest, Sofia gazed back at him. She had only seen a glimpse of his world, a world of secrets, danger, and darkness, and she had no desire to be a part of it. He was leaning in her direction, his dark eyes filled with a pure emotion that she was unable to fully understand. He said, "I need you to trust me," in a quiet, desperate voice. "If anything happens, call me. I'll be there. No matter what." Speechless, Sofia nodded. In the middle of the rising storm, his words served as a lifeline and a promise.
