Chapter 8: The Storm Approaches

-- Beneath the Surface -- The weight of approaching danger and unsaid words made the cafe's atmosphere feel heavier now. Sofia's mind kept going back to Zhybrix and the odd man, making it difficult for her to concentrate on the minor tasks at hand. Since the conversation they had, the tension in her chest had not went down and she knew in her heart that it would only worsen. As usual, Zhybrix left the cafe hours ago with a confusing expression. A part of her wasn't sure if she still wanted the answers he hadn't given her. Breathing grew more difficult the more she felt drawn into his world. She still had clients to serve, though, and the cafe was still operating. Now, it seemed to be just a distraction. Her thoughts was racing all the time, and the usual clink of mugs and the hum of the espresso machine became a blur of sound. The door then opened once more. A well-known person entered, briefly blocking the sun with his large frame. Sofia's throat tightened each breath. The man from earlier. The person who had observed her. As he made his way to the counter, he looked directly at her without acknowledging anyone. Sofia's hands trembled slightly as her heart sped up and she took a simple step back. "May I assist you?” She asked, trying to maintain a calm tone of voice. After watching her for a while, he leaned forward and spoke in a low, thoughtful voice. "We must talk." Sofia felt sick to her stomach. She was aware at the time that anything he said would not be favorable. "About what?” Trying to keep some sense of control, she asked. He grinned, though it didn't reach his eyes, “Regarding your security. Zhybrix's as well, but especially regarding your part in all of this.” Sofia's heart skipped a beat. "I don't get it." For a short period, the man's eyes softened, but it was only for a moment. “You will soon enough.” He turned and walked back out the door, vanishing onto the crowded street outside before she could react. -- A Dangerous Game -- For a time, Sofia stood still, and her thoughts whirling. Yes, she was expecting challenges, but not like this. She kept thinking about the man's strange remarks. Now she knew she was part of something much greater than herself, and Zhybrix was at its root. She became increasingly aware of how little she had known about him as she gave it more thought. She had barely touched the surface of his life, the darkness he went through. But she kept thinking about that little moment of vulnerability when he trusted her and told her about the trouble that surrounded him. She was sure that he hadn't intended for her to see that side of him. However, she was now more deeply involved than she had ever imagined. When the door jingled once again and she saw several familiar faces entering the cafe, her thoughts returned to the here and now. In hoping to calm the flood of ideas that threatened to overwhelm her, Sofia breathed deeply. She needed to do her job. However, the feeling of worry that had taken place in the pit of her stomach was too strong for her to ignore. -- The Pieces Come Together -- The cafe was quieter than usual later that evening. Strange shadows were created on the walls by the fading light from the street lamps outside. Still recovering from the interaction with the stranger, Sofia stood by the counter, cleaning the surface. Zhybrix was still absent. Given she hadn't heard from him all day, her worry deepened as he stayed to be away. There were just too many harmful unknowns and unsolved questions. The door creaked open as she stood there. She turned to see that it wasn't Zhybrix, but her heart skipped. The guy who had previously been with Zhybrix, Lorenzo. Lorenzo's approach was unreadable when his eyes met hers. The silence between them lasted for a minute, heavy and dense. In a calm but forceful voice, Lorenzo said, "I've been asked to keep an eye on things." Sofia moved away from the counter and glared. "What's happening again? What does that mean?" Lorenzo glanced at the door and then back at her. He leaned a little closer. “It means that you are not as safe as you believe yourself to be. Some people wish to take advantage of you in order to get him.” Sofia's throat tightened each breath. Her mind was racing. "Zhybrix?" Lorenzo made a single nod. “He is a target. And so is everyone beyond close to him.” Sofia's heartbeat raced. “But, what reason does that have to me?" "You're not just anybody, Sofia." Lorenzo's eyes grew softer, yet they still had a hint of sharpness. "You are now a part of this. And there isn't a simple solution anymore.” Sofia wanted to argue. She wanted to claim that none of this was her choice and that all she had wanted was to live her life and find some peace. In reality, though, she was already tied. She couldn't leave this world just yet. Her voice was little to no above a whisper as she confessed, "I don't know what to do." Lorenzo looked at her for a long time, considering what she had to say. At last he said something. “Trust Zhybrix. Have a deeper trust in him than in anybody else. Now, he is the only person who can protect you.” -- The Calm Before the Storm -- As the hours went by, Sofia's nervousness only grew. She stayed at the cafe even after it closed for the evening. She had the strong feeling that a storm was getting closer and it was coming quickly. Outside, the only sounds in the calm city were the distant traffic and the buzz of streetlights. However, Sofia sensed the tension in the air from deep within. It was like an unseen but unavoidable force pushing everything in the direction of a breakdown. When the door jingled open again, Sofia didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. Zhybrix. His undeniable presence filled the doorway with his shadow. However, there was no mask this time. No detached coldness. He entered slowly, looking around the room before focusing on her. His voice was also quieter than she had ever heard him speak. His eyes were fierce as he replied, "I am truly sorry for not telling you sooner." "But right now, there's no time for explanations." Sofia's heart was pounding. The storm has come.
