-- A Decision to Make --
Sofia carefully and mindfully watched Zhybrix as he close the door behind him, the silence between them nearly suffocating. His gaze never left hers, and Sofia noticed weakness in them for the first time. The kind of weakness that would break even the toughest men.
As Sofia tried to take it all in, her heart pounded in her chest -- the strange man from before. Lorenzo's advice. What Zhybrix had said was confusing. The threat was real now, not just something hiding in the background. It was there.
Zhybrix finally said, "I didn't want to drag you into this, Sofia," in a low, almost apologetic voice. "But there's no way to get back now."
Sofia could feel her throat tightening. Her thoughts were a blur and her head was whirling. "What's happening, Zhybrix? What's really going on here?” With a trembling voice, she pointed around them. "What do they want?"
Sofia moved a little as Zhybrix moved in closer. The fear was no longer the reason. She was shaking from the complete heaviness of the moment and the weight of all that was going on.
"They're chasing me," he said, his mouth clenched. "And anybody who gets close to me is a target."
Sofia's throat was dry as she swallowed. “But why me?"
There was a hint of regret in his eyes, but they softened as he looked at her. "Because you are more important than you think."
The words were like a blow to her. They weren't just spoken with the usual cold distance Zhybrix had always worn like armor. No, there was another thing there. A connection. There was a slight hint of something she couldn't identify, but it was obvious.
"You had the option to leave, Sofia.” Zhybrix went on, his voice just above a whisper, "I should have kept you out of this." “But, I didn't, and it's too late now.”
As the weight of his words settled in, Sofia's mind raced. She had never known how much more dangerous the man she was falling for this mystery of darkness and danger.
She talked more calm now, but there was still a bit of uncertainty in her voice as she said, "I don't know if I can just walk away. I've already been brought into this world with you. I can't act like nothing is going on.”
With mysterious eyes, Zhybrix watched her for a long time. Then he nodded and let out a soft sigh. "I'll take every measure possible to ensure your safety. Even I have little control over the forces that happen here."
Sofia's inner storm started to brew. In her heart, she knew there was no simple way out. No shortcut.
-- The Enemy Revealed --
Suddenly, there was some noise. A gentle tapping on the windows of the cafe. As Sofia's gaze shifted to Zhybrix and then to the door, the room seemed colder. There seemed to be a breaking of strong energy between them. Every muscle in his body was tense and worried.
Zhybrix said quietly, "They're here," as he glanced toward the door. "And they won't give up until they get what they want!"
A shiver went up Sofia's spine, but she stayed firm. Not right now. Not when things had changed in this way already.
"Who are they?” She asked, not sure if she really wanted to know or not.
Zhybrix's tone was low and deadly, and his eyes darkened. “For years, I've been trying to stay away from this kind of people. They have money, power, and connections. And they don't like anyone who gets in their way.”
A beat skipped in Sofia's heart. She was facing a man who had obviously broken boundaries that most people couldn't even understand.
At that moment, the door creaked open, but it wasn't the soft bell that often called for clients. No, it seemed like a warning this time.
Sofia's breath froze in her throat as two individuals she instantly recognized from Zhybrix's past entered the cafe, causing her to turn her head completely.
The taller one was the man who had been spying on her earlier, the one with the strange smile. Beside him, the second person was a woman with dark hair and fierce eyes. She was armed, with her hand casually resting on the grip of a black revolver tucked beneath her jacket.
The room's vibe changed. The temperature seemed to have dropped by ten degrees. They weren't here for small talk, Sofia's gut told her.
However, Zhybrix did not react. He just remained motionless, his gaze focused on the two. He seemed too composed for what was going to happen.
"Zhybrix, we don't have time for games." The man said in a controlled voice. “You know what we want.” He added.
Zhybrix took a moment to react, looking from the man to the woman and back again. “And I’ve already told you,” Zhybrix stated calmly, “you’re not going to get it.”
The man grinned, but it didn’t reach his eyes. "Then we'll have to force you to change mind."
As the tension in the room increased, Sofia's heart raced. Although the man's responses were terrifying there was something more in the air. A storm that was about to break.
-- The Choice --
The woman's actions were comfortable and quick as she approached Zhybrix. She sharpened her eyes and added, "You're in our way." "You've been a headache for all time. And you will surely stay like that."
Sofia glanced from Zhybrix to the woman, her heart pounding. "With him, what do you want?” Her voice was steady but shaking as she asked.
With calculating eyes, the woman looked at her for a moment before turning back to Zhybrix. "We'll take care of you soon. But we're here for him right now.”
Zhybrix's face remained motionless. Sofia recognized that he was a man who had seen this moment lately. He had been making his best effort to keep her from this side of life.
However, Sofia would no longer take it. She was unable to. Not after everything.
Then the woman looked sharply at Sofia. "You're also in our way."
Before anyone could respond, Zhybrix made a move. He quickly put his hand on the woman's wrist and pushed her back so hard that she stumbled. His eyes were cruel and dark.
"Get. "Out." His tone was low and threatening.
The cafe began to hold its breath for a moment as the man's smile faded. Then the man laughed, bitterly and darkly. “Zhybrix, we'll be back. You cannot hide forever.”
The two spared Sofia one more look before turning to walk out, their footsteps echoing in the following darkness.
With a sharp gasp, Sofia relaxed herself against the counter, but her legs still trembling.
Zhybrix turned to face her, with keen eyes and a hand that was still in the air where the woman had been just a moment earlier.
"That was just the beginning," he added softly.
Sofia just kept her silence.
