Extra Chapter: Jill and Feng (2)
The location for the terrain was not a simulation but a real place somewhere in the worlds the Reaper organization had a portal to.
The moment the door opened, strong gusts of wind blew on them. Thunder boomed vehemently as lightning struck a tree only ten meters away from the portal, illuminating the whole surroundings for a few seconds.
Jill screamed. She sat down and covered her ears, her body shivering in fear.
Feng sighed and stopped right away. He wanted to blame her for being hard-headed but he swallowed the words right away.
He walked towards her and patted her back for a while until he felt Jill slowly relax a bit.
“Do you still want to go on?” Feng asked after some time. However, even if he asked this, it only meant staying in the teleporter until the training ended.
The training repertoire for hunters in the organization was set at a minimum of one hour. They could not leave this place until the time limit was reached.
Jill shook her head, “Let’s not waste your effort.” Despite her shaking legs, she collected her messed-up emotions and walked out of the teleporter.
Completely drenched, she disregarded the roaring winds and heavy rainfall. Walking under the dark-gray sky, ignoring the giant sparks of electricity between the clouds from the distance. Before another lightning strike again, she shifted to her fighting posture and taunted Feng. “Quick. Don’t waste my time.”
Feng gazed at her blankly. Ignoring Jill’s provoking, he followed her.
He could only ignore the cold seeping through his whole body as he completely got soaked. At the same time, Feng noticed Jill flinched at the low rumble of thunder from the distance.
Without further ado, he turned on his counter. One of his eyes turned to gold as a few virtual calculators appeared in his eyes the moment he activated the device.
With an area of 100 meters, the whole location, space, and time was a registered training ground. Even so, the twenty-meter battle ring-like slot of land was the only place Feng and Jill could fight. During the training, the moment one steps outside of the ring, it will be considered as a defeat,
The moment Feng’s two feet entered the ring, water and mud splattered around as Jill bolted towards him. His counter started calculating her speed per microsecond.
The trees violently swayed as they created waves after waves of impact every time two of them clashed continuously. Ignoring the vicious winds of the thunderstorm, they attacked and blocked each other. It appeared like they were equal in speed and strength. An equal match.
Feng, compared to his two teammates, had a slower reaction time during the battle. He gritted his teeth. The counter was a gift from Agase before he left for their last mission.
So Jill can’t bully you anymore. These words provoked Jill and she ran after Agase for hours, wanting to beat the latter to a pulp.
Feng’s eyes narrowed. Without this counter, Jill might have landed a fatal punch or kick on him already.
A red computation suddenly appeared in Feng's vision, pointing at the clouds. Alerted, he shouted, “Jill!” Then he jumped back.
Out of a conditional response, Jill dashed after him just in time as a jagged white flash of lightning hit the place two steps away from Jill’s former position.
She froze on the spot and paled. “How did you—?!”
Before she could finish her words, a fist stopped right in front of her face. She stuttered, “You—A-Feng?! How did y-you?” predict the lightning's path?
She could not finish the question and Feng knew why.
Jill had always been a fierce fighter. It did not matter which time and place it was, she would fight with all she had. However, a thunderstorm was always her weakness.
Back in the past, Agase always cared for them. He would help Jill calm down whenever they needed to go to a place with a thunderstorm. He would train Feng and help him see the best move in most attacks.
An efficient, dedicated leader.
The only moment he hesitated was that time. For that mission.
So, why?
He remembered how Agase looked after they received the mission.
It was the first time he expressed confusion in his eyes as he begged them to let him handle the situation.
But even until that day, he was not able to handle it. And with the Memory Bank intercepting their mission, their leader sacrificed himself to save that soul. Without explanation, just like that, leaving Feng and Jill to deal with the aftermath.
And until now, the feeling of disappointment and betrayal stayed in their hearts.
Feng stared at his partner, now soaked in rain, her eyes looked glittery as the sparks at the distant sky reflected in her eyes.
“Do you fully believe that the leader betrayed us 100%?” he asked.
Jill gritted her teeth, “Haven’t you seen what he did with your own eyes?” She replied instead, without the intention of answering his question.
With just a glance, Feng knew what she really thought inside her heart. He had known her for a long time. As long as the length of knowing Agase.
He retracted his fist, “He won’t do something without reasons. You know it in your heart. Even if he kept the real situation to us, I still believe he had a reason for doing so” he paused, “And I know that you knew it in you, too.”
Jill looked away without any intention of speaking.
Feng continued, “Do you really think the higher-ups will spare him once they find him?”
Without waiting for Jill’s reply, he turned away and walked towards the trees.
Loud, knocking sounds soon came one after another as Feng punched the dead trees continuously, not stopping until the dead trees c***k in half and fell down.
He vented all his anger, waiting for the remaining time to pass.
Jill just stood under the wind and rain, jolting at every sound of thunder but not daring to make a move.
When they received the end of training notice, Feng made his way back and pulled Jill by the wrist. Before they stepped into the door, Feng stopped. Without gazing at her, he declared, “I’ll leave and find the leader. I won’t stop until I catch him myself and hear the truth from him. Take care of yourself while I’m gone.”
Jill pushed him against the wall. “Are you stupid,” she exclaimed. “You’re seeking death!”
Feng smirked, “What’s the difference? I would have long been dead without the leader anyway. If siding with him meant death, then so be it.”
Jill’s eyes flared in anger. She screamed, huffing as she punched Feng’s chest. “ You i***t! Do you really think I don’t know?! He did it so we won’t be implicated! Of course, I know! And will you waste his sacrifices by sending yourself to death?! Stupid!”
She froze when Feng wrapped his arms around her for the first time. His voice was calm and soothing, serving as a tranquilizer in her panicked state. “Yes, I’m an i***t, so don’t follow me. Stay well and safe…”
Jill felt a bite-like feeling on her nape. She saw Feng’s mouth still move as if he was still saying something. But she could not hear it anymore and could only guess in her heart as her consciousness slowly slipped away.
Feng held the unconscious Jill in his arms, caressing her cheek with a tender gaze in his eyes. “Please be well while I’m gone.”
