Chapter 1
Chapter One The Invitation Paris had a way of making everything look beautiful. Even secrets. Chelly Laurent stood across the street from the towering black-and-gold building that housed Maison Devereaux, staring at the name engraved above its entrance. DEEVEREAUX. The letters were elegant. Expensive. Untouchable. She tightened her fingers around the leather folder pressed against her chest. “Don't embarrass yourself,” she whispered. Her reflection stared back at her from the glass of a nearby boutique—dark hair pulled neatly into a low bun, a cream blouse beneath a fitted black coat, and eyes that betrayed far more nerves than she wanted anyone to see. Today was supposed to be the beginning of her career. She had imagined this moment countless times. She had imagined walking through those doors as a designer whose work would someday appear on Paris runways. She had imagined applause. Success. Freedom. She had never imagined fear. Chelly drew in a slow breath and crossed the street. The moment she stepped inside Maison Devereaux, she understood why people called it one of the most powerful fashion houses in Europe. Everything was immaculate. Marble floors stretched beneath enormous crystal chandeliers. Models moved through the lobby carrying garment bags. Assistants hurried past with tablets and folders. The walls displayed framed photographs from decades of Paris Fashion Week—designers, celebrities, royalty. And everywhere she looked, there was silk. Silk gowns. Silk scarves. Silk curtains. Beautiful things hiding expensive secrets. “Miss Laurent?” Chelly turned. A woman in her late forties stood behind the reception desk. “Yes?” “Mr. Devereaux is expecting you.” Chelly's stomach tightened. “Mr. Devereaux?” The receptionist's expression remained professional. “Adrian Devereaux.” Of course. She had heard the name. Everyone in the fashion industry had. Adrian Devereaux was the current CEO of Maison Devereaux and the only son of the late Henri Devereaux. At thirty-two, he had transformed the family business into an even larger empire. He was known for being brilliant. Ruthless. Private. And almost impossible to impress. Chelly swallowed. “I thought I was here for an interview with the creative director.” “You were.” The woman paused. “Mr. Devereaux requested to meet you personally.” That made Chelly's nerves worse. “Why?” The receptionist simply smiled. “I wasn't told.” Chelly forced herself to smile back. Wonderful. She followed an assistant through the building, trying not to stare at everything. They passed a long corridor lined with sketches from previous collections. Then Chelly stopped. Her eyes landed on one particular photograph. A woman stood beside a collection of dresses. She had dark hair. Soft eyes. A small smile. Chelly's breath caught. She knew that face. Her mother. Isabelle Laurent. For several seconds, the world seemed to disappear. “Miss Laurent?” Chelly didn't answer. She stepped closer to the photograph. There was a small plaque beneath it. MAISON DEVEREAUX — SPRING COLLECTION, 2004. And beneath that were several names. One of them made her heart pound. Isabelle Laurent — Assistant Designer. Her mother had never told her she had worked here. Never. Not once. “Miss Laurent.” This time the assistant's voice was sharper. Chelly blinked. “Yes. Sorry.” “You shouldn't fall behind.” Chelly looked at the photograph one last time. Then she followed. But something had changed. She wasn't walking into Maison Devereaux for an interview anymore. She was walking into her mother's past. --- The assistant stopped in front of a pair of enormous wooden doors. “Mr. Devereaux's office.” She knocked once. A deep voice answered from inside. “Come in.” Chelly's fingers tightened around her folder. She entered. The first thing she noticed was the view. Paris stretched beyond the enormous windows, the Eiffel Tower visible in the distance beneath a pale afternoon sky. The second thing she noticed was the silence. And the third— Him. Adrian Devereaux stood with his back toward her, one hand resting in his trouser pocket as he stared through the window. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit. No tie. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, as though he had run his fingers through it more than once. He turned. Chelly forgot how to breathe for half a second. His eyes were colder than she expected. Gray. Sharp. Observant. They moved over her slowly, taking in every detail without apology. “You're late.” Chelly glanced at the clock. “I arrived three minutes early.” “I know.” She frowned. “Then why did you say I was late?” “Because I wanted to see whether you would correct me.” Chelly stared at him. Adrian's expression barely changed. Interesting. She straightened. “Well, now you know.” For the first time, something flickered in his eyes. Not quite amusement. But close. “Sit.” She sat across from his desk. Adrian remained standing. “Chelly Laurent.” “Yes.” “You graduated at the top of your design program.” “Yes.” “You rejected offers from three smaller Parisian houses.” “Yes.” “Why?” She hesitated. “Because I don't want to spend my life designing clothes no one remembers.” His gaze sharpened. “And you think you can create something people will remember?” “I know I can.” Silence. Chelly immediately wondered whether she'd said too much. Adrian finally walked toward his desk and sat down. He opened the folder in front of him. “Confidence.” He turned a page. “Ambition.” Another page. “Talent.” His eyes lifted. “And a rather impressive refusal to be intimidated.” Chelly leaned back slightly. “Is that a compliment?” “No.” “Then what is it?” “A warning.” Her smile disappeared. Adrian closed the folder. “You have no idea what you're walking into.” The words sent an unexpected chill down her spine. “I'm applying for a design position.” “No.” He leaned forward. “You're applying to enter a house built on secrets.” Chelly stared at him. “What does that mean?” Adrian didn't answer. Instead, his eyes moved toward the window. For the briefest moment, his expression changed. Something almost like regret crossed his face. Then it vanished. “You'll start Monday.” Chelly blinked. “I got the job?” “Yes.” “That was the interview?” “Yes.” She frowned. “You didn't even look at my portfolio.” “I already did.” He tapped the folder. “I've seen everything you've ever submitted.” Something about the way he said it unsettled her. “Everything?” “Yes.” Chelly slowly stood. “Thank you for the opportunity.” She turned toward the door. “Miss Laurent.” She stopped. Adrian's voice had changed. It was quieter now. Almost dangerous. “Stay away from the fourth-floor archive.” Chelly turned back. “Why?” His eyes met hers. “Because there is nothing there that concerns you.” A strange feeling settled in her chest. She nodded. “Understood.” She walked out. The door closed behind her. Adrian remained perfectly still. Only when he was certain she was gone did he reach into the bottom drawer of his desk. He pulled out an old photograph. The edges were worn. The image showed three people standing together twenty-two years earlier. A young Henri Devereaux. A younger Isabelle Laurent. And a third person whose face had been carefully scratched out. Adrian stared at Isabelle's face. Then at the photograph of Chelly on the employment application. The resemblance was undeniable. He whispered the words he had promised himself he would never say again. “Isabelle…” His hand tightened around the photograph. “You should never have come back.” Outside his office, Chelly walked down the corridor. She passed the photograph of her mother again. This time, she stopped. There was something she hadn't noticed before. A tiny handwritten note had been written on the back of the frame. Chelly leaned closer. Her heart began to pound. The handwriting was unmistakably her mother's. Four words. Trust no Devereaux. Chelly stared at them. Then she heard footsteps behind her. She turned. Nobody was there. But somewhere deep inside Maison Devereaux, a door quietly locked. And Chelly Laurent had no idea that by accepting the job, she had just stepped into a secret that had been waiting twenty-two years for her to return.
