Alice, Not from Wonderland

"I knew that there was something wrong. I wonder how long this has been going on," she said. Lanie was pissed, hurt, and melancholy all in one. Lanie grabbed the envelope and sat down in the office chair. She opened the letter and read it. "My dearest Darry, I can't tell you how happy that I am since you started working here. Every single day, I look forward to seeing you and spending time with you. I love how you make me laugh, how you make me smile, and more so how you kiss me when you see me. It sends shivers down my body. I have never felt so strongly about anyone. I have been through some rough relationships and never felt like I belonged in that relationship, but with you, it is completely different. I feel like the happiest woman in the world. No one could ever compare to you. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, and I look forward to seeing you. Love always, Alice."      Tears rolled down Lanie's face as she realized that man that she had been with her whole life, the man that she had married, the one that she vowed to spend the rest of her life with, was seeing another woman behind her back. She then remembered the laptop. How quickly he closed it. Lanie opened the laptop. It was locked. Lanie started putting in what passwords that she thought it could be. She started talking to herself. "DarryDarnell" nothing happened. "LanieDarnell" again, nothing happened. "Alice" password accepted. Lanie was angry. She continued to look through the laptop. There was a folder named Alice. Inside, Lanie found pictures of them together, nude pictures of Alice, nude pictures of Darry.      They looked happy. The kind of happiness that she and Darry had once had. Lanie drifts off into outer space, into a daydream. What was the breaking point? What drifted us apart? They had always been so close. Darry started to change when he lost his job at the bank. Money was scarce and bills were starting to pile back up. Darry was so happy while he was working at the bank, he made money, and was able to provide a life for him and Lanie. They had plans after their home was paid off to try and go through the process of starting a family. Lanie still remembers the conversation that they had that day. "Honey, once we get this house paid off, I want to expand our family. I want nothing more than to be a dad, for you to be a mother. I know that things haven't always been easy for us with losing the baby when we were younger, But I have always known that you would be a great mother. I see how you are with the children at school. How happy you make them. You make them see that they are loved, and you would do that for us." said Darry. "You want to try to have a family? That makes me so happy, love. I would love that. I just don't want to be disappointed if I'm told that I still can't have children. It would crush me, and I don't know if I could handle that again." said Lanie. "No matter what, I'm always going to be there for you, when I said I do, I meant it, I'll fight tooth and nail for this, I love you, baby," he said.      Lanie snaps back into reality and focuses back on the laptop in front of her. Darry still had all his work open and at the bottom, an email was left open. It was from her. The woman that had been ruining their relationship. "Darry, would you like to join me for dinner tonight and maybe a few drinks at the bar? asked Alice. It was an email from the night of the raise. The same day that Lanie found out from the principal that she was getting a raise. The same night that she made the dinner for him. The same night that she put that little red dress on that he loved so much. Lanie had been preparing to spend a night with her husband while he was spending it with her.      Lanie closed the laptop and put the letters back in the drawer where she had found them. She felt a sense of numbness come over her body. She got up out of the chair and walked out of the office, closing the door behind her. So that's what he has been up to. Seeing this other woman. "I refuse to be a second choice. This is my husband, and I will not sit back why he puts me on the back burner for another woman. I will get my husband back."      Christmas is in a week. School ends on Friday and Lanie just found out her husband has a mistress that he has been secretly seeing behind her back. She needed to think about what she needed to say to Darry. They had been together since they were 13 years old. They had been married for 25 years. Had their marriage meant nothing to him? Would it even be worth fighting for? "I love him with all of my heart, but this hurts me. He has been lying about staying late because he had paperwork that had to be done. But he was seeing her, spending time with her. I need to think about this." said Lanie.      When Lanie gets stressed out, she likes to go for walks around the local walking trail. It helps her clear her mind. Lanie walks upstairs to the bedroom and puts on the yoga outfit that she hadn't worn in almost a year. Walking always helps her calm down. "Seeing as how Darry won't be home until later tonight, there isn't a point in staying home drowning myself in the what-ifs," she said. She grabs her phone and turns on her music playlist. She then heads out the door to head to the trail. It was only a few miles from her house.      As Lanie was walking to the trail, she was thinking about Christmas, her eyes started to sting as tears rolled down her face. How was this going to affect things? What was going to happen to them? They had always spent Christmas together up until last year when everything changed because Darry had to work. As Lanie walks down the trail, far into the trail, she sees a man in a dark grey hoodie approaching her, within seconds she felt a chill come over her body.
