A Note from the Mistress

1217 Words
Lanie could feel her blood starting to boil. Darry was being distant and Lanie is determined to find out why. Lanie tore up the note and threw it in the trash. She turned off the coffee maker, poured out the coffee, and screamed as she threw the coffee mug into the sink. "I am sick of feeling like this!" she screamed. "I deserve to feel like I matter, Darry and I are going to have a long talk tonight," she said. It was getting closer to Christmas and Lanie wanted to decorate her classroom. One by one the students started showing up. She had a great day planned for them. She was going to make the best out of today, no matter what problems she was facing at home. As each student came in, she had them put their bags in their cubbies and take a seat. She had printed out some Christmas coloring pages and had some paints and glitters for each of them to create their own Christmas decorations around the classroom. After decorations were completed, they were left for the paints and glues to dry. It was nap time. Each day the students got 45 minutes to sleep. Toddlers and younger children get tired easily and let them nap, rejuvenates them, and gives them the energy they need to continue learning. Each day, the students get two naps. At 10 am and then after lunch at 1 pm. School is then let out at 2. Each teacher does things differently, but it works for Lanie     As time goes by, Lanie realizes that class is almost over and it will be time to go home. After all of the children have left, Lanie packs her bag and heads out the door to head home. Once home, Lanie realizes that Darry is home. I guess a short day? She walks into his office he closes his computer fast. "Oh honey, you're home, how was your day?" he said. "It was fine. I had the children decorate Christmas stuff to hang around the classroom. They loved it." she said. "That's great honey. Can we talk? I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for not coming home until late last night. Had I known that you were making me a dinner like that, I would have been here. I am so proud of you for getting that raise. Maybe this weekend we can go out and celebrate?" said Darry.      "Darry, I understand that you are working now between your writing and now working for the realty company, you don't have as much time to be spent with me at home. However, because you are my husband, I would like to know if you are okay, and when you are coming home. It would be okay if you would call me and let me know that you are working over and won't be home until later. I wouldn't worry as much. But I texted you last night and never heard anything back from you. I felt ignored. Then you come in last night, smelling of liquor and cheap beer, and try to love on me? Just please let me know the next time you are going to be going to a bar instead of coming home to your wife." she said. "I feel like a child Lanie! I shouldn't have to let you know every time that I do something. If I want to go have some beers with the boys then I should be able to do that without you having a fit about it." he said. "Having a fit? Darry, it's not me having a fit, it's being concerned about you. That's all. I just want you to be okay, and if I don't hear from you, I worry. I love you, and I don't want anything bad happening to you, okay?" exclaimed Lanie.      "You're right honey, I should let you know. I'm sorry. I have to go back to the office. I just decided to come home to take my lunch break. I will be home in a few hours, what are we having for dinner?" he said. "I don't think I am going to cook anything tonight, why don't you pick up some Chinese food on your way in? I probably will take me a bubble bath and watch a movie until you get home," said Lanie.       "Okay love, I will see you tonight when I get home," said Darry quietly. Darry packs up his paperwork but leaves his laptop and heads out the door. Lanie, still upset heads up to the bathroom in the master bedroom. The bathroom is one of the reasons that she fell in love with the house. The tub can fit two or three people. There are over 60 jets and headrests at each end of the tub. Lanie turns on the hot water and plugs the tub and adds some foam bath to the tub. When Darry and she bought the house together, Darry was working for the bank. Darry was a manager for the bank and he was making really good money. He worked for the bank for many, many years and throughout that time, bought the 3 bedroom house that they currently resign in. They have a huge master bedroom and bath, a game room, and a movie room. Below the house, in the basement, they have a man cave with pool tables and arcade machines, and a large pool outside. It took a long but they were able to pay off the house. Lanie has always been a school teacher, teaching pre-k or kindergarten but that's all. Being a school teacher has its ups and downs. Their pay hasn't always been great, but it's something that Lanie loves to do. She loves to teach. The downfall of it all is that school isn't year-round. So during the summertime, school is let out for 3 months. During those 3 months, Lanie still receives a check through the school but it's cut in half. So she spends the days that she isn't working at a local orphanage. Some of the students that are in her classroom are at the orphanage and it makes her smile to be able to see them outside of school.      The bubbles have now reached the rim of the tub, so Lanie turned off the water, the lights, and then she lights some candles and climbs in. She puts a warm rag over her face and lays back to relax. Lanie drifts off to sleep for a little while. After she wakes up, she starts to think about what happened when she came home from work. When she walked into Darry's office and he closed his laptop quickly. "I wonder why he closed it so fast?" she said. Lanie got out of the tub, wrapped herself in her red silk robe, and headed to Darry's office. She started rummaging through the paperwork on the desk and didn't notice anything. She looked through the drawers on the left, nothing. Then the drawers on the right, in the corner of the drawer she noticed that there was a secret compartment. She lifted it. Inside, she found an envelope labeled, "To my love." At that moment, Lanie felt her heart sink into her stomach.
