Camille moaned softly as his teeth gently bit at her lips. His hands caressed her beneath the towel, igniting the blood beneath her skin. Her nerves felt like they were going to explode wherever he touched. Warning bells began blaring in her mind and brought Camille back to reality.
Her hand slipped into his hair, pulling him closer to her as she bit down hard on his lips.
Jace made a surprised sound, and pulled away before looking at her with appreciation. "Oh I like when you're feisty," he said, as he licked the blood that had gathered on his lips from her bite.
"I wasn't trying to be feisty," Camille retorted, disgusted by his reaction and hers for kissing him back in the first place. "And I want you to get the hell out of my house," she demanded as she walked over to the door and flung it open.
Jace walked to the door and slammed it shut before turning back to her.
Camille glared intensely at him. "How dare you come here and kiss me when you’re going out with my sister," she barely gritted out through clenched teeth. She got even angrier as he smirked at her and leaned against the door.
He smirked. "Don't pretend you're not attracted to me Camille."
She clenched her fist by her sides. He was right but she wasn't going to let it get to her.
"Jace," she breathed before continuing, "why are you here?"
He looked at her intently and she saw the lust shining in his grey eyes.
"It's simple, I want you," he pointed out to her, his voice husky. She ignored the tone that was causing her insides to twist.
"Then what the hell are you doing with my sister?" she asked, furious.
He shrugged. "I like her."
"What do you think you're doing then? Why are you here?" She repeated.
He shrugged again. "Because I couldn't resist. I like her…but I want you."
"You're disgusting! I want you to leave," she told him, crossing her arms over her chest which may have been a mistake on her part as his eyes wandered to the part of her breasts no longer hidden beneath the towel.
She stared at him, holding his gaze, daring him to touch her and was almost disappointed when he stayed where he was.
"I'm sure that's not actually what you want Camille," he said arrogantly. "As I recall, you seemed to really enjoy seeing me last time. Or at least that's what I got from all your moaning… and all your screams."
Her face burned. "You're such an ass you know that!" she exclaimed, humiliated by his words.
"Well, the appeal works like a charm. I mean it got you into bed with me didn't it?" He crossed his arms over his chest and relaxed on the door even further as he continued smirking.
More anger shot through her. "And obviously my charm worked, since here you are in my home when you are currently supposed to be dating my sister," she retorted, annoyed.
He shrugged indifferently. "What can I say? You're better in bed than most girls."
She blinked. "Was that your idea of a compliment?"
"It should be," he replied arrogantly.
Camille rolled her eyes. "I'm tired of this pointless argument, so let me try this again. Let yourself out before I get the cops to do it. Am I clear now?"
Jace smirked. "Are you always this fun?” he said. “But don't worry I won't be coming back again."
"Oh no… what shall I ever do without you?" Camille deadpanned.
Jace chuckled lowly. "I won't be coming back again because you'll be coming to me next time."
Camille scoffed and raised an eyebrow. "I hope you’ll be very disappointed when I don't show up for round two."
"Everyone shows up for round two," he winked.
"Well then I guess I'm not everyone, huh?" she mocked as she crossed her arm.
“Maybe,” he shrugged. And with that he exited her apartment.
Camille slammed the door shut before leaning against it to breathe.
She hadn't realized she possessed the strength to stop their kiss, especially since she had been dreaming of it for quite some time.
Regardless of how he’d made her feel, the point was he was now dating her sister. And she needed her sister to see just how much of a bastard he really was. Except Camille knew she couldn’t tell Alice what had just happened. She had a feeling her sister would only blame her instead of seeing the truth.
A beeping sound coming from her room made Camille realize that she only had a few minutes to get dressed and head to work. She hurriedly put on her clothes and drove the short distance to Lucy's, one of the few locally owned diners in town, where she worked alongside her best friend Chanelle. She pushed open the door, slightly annoyed by the tinkling of the door chimes which alerted her late presence, and rushed to the back room to get her pad and pencil.
"Sweetie, why are you so late?" a familiar voice said behind her.
"I know I know I got held up. I might actually get fired this time Nelly," she replied as she turned around to face her beautiful best friend. Her caramel skin was smooth and flawless and she had shoulder length dark brown hair. She also had gorgeous hazel colored eyes and a heart shaped face which had guys hooked once they saw her. Not to mention her perfect curves which she loved to show off.
Chanelle laughed. "You get fired? Viola loves you way too much to let you go." Camille wasn’t so sure about that.
"Come on lets go, I've been covering for your behind so you owe me."
Camille sighed but a grateful smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "Fine. Margaritas or Tequilas?" Camille asked.
Chanelle laughed as she pushed open the door and started walking out. "Both? And by the way sweetie whatever is bothering you, you better spill before I have to make you," she told Camille before walking to a table to serve some new customers.
Camille smiled and shook her head. She knew there was a reason why they were best friends. Chanelle always seemed to know when something was wrong.
Five hours later, after suffering from bratty kids and butt grabbing assholes, Camille's shift was finally over. She glanced at her wristwatch and sighed in relief, ten o' clock already. She helped the other waitresses clean up and stacked the chairs for the next day. After waving goodbye to the rest of Lucy's staff, Chanelle finally rounded on her.
"Spill. Now." Chanelle demanded while Camille was changing her clothes.
With a tired sigh, Camille turned around and gave Chanelle her answer. "Isleptwithmysister'sboyfriend."
Chanelle stared at her in bemusement. "Okay… so I did not hear a single word you just said. Care to repeat?"
"I slept with Alice's boyfriend," Camille whispered while glancing down at the checkered black and white tiles as if they were the most interesting thing she'd ever seen. "Well I mean he wasn't her boyfriend then."
There was silence before Chanelle's laughter broke it. Camille looked up to see her best friend practically convulsing and holding her sides.
"It's not funny," she mumbled as she saw Chanelle wiping tears from her eyes.
"You-you're right," she said in between her laughter. "I'm sorry girly it's just that here I thought it was something all serious."
Camille glared at her.
It was? Wasn't it?
Chanelle grinned at her before saying, "Now tell me exactly everything that happened. Leave absolutely nothing out."
Camille raised an eyebrow. "Everything, everything?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.
Chanelle nodded slowly.
"Stephonne isn't here at the moment, you know he went away on another business trip and I need something else to fill in the empty void," Chanelle responded with a pout.
And so Camille told her the entire story, even the details that made her blush, and her friend looked at her with…admiration?
"What's up with the look, Nelly?"
But Chanelle just smirked at her before grabbing her into a hug. "I'm so proud of you!" she squealed as Camille looked bemused. "I can't believe you had the guts to initiate a one night stand.” Then Chanelle slapped her on her arm. “And I can’t believe this is the first time I’m hearing about it. How could you keep that from me?”
Camille smiled sheepishly. “I know. I know. But it was Valentine’s Day and I was losing my mind at home.” She looked away. “I just wanted to forget about him.”
Her friend gave her an understanding look. “Well it sounds like it was well worth it. I mean the guy sounds hot. Not to mention he knows what he’s doing in bed."
Camille sighed. "Yeah, but he's a complete ass," she reminded her friend.
“Yeah and I'm also hella proud of you that you didn't give in the second time and even made him bleed instead. You are crazy, chica."
Too bad her raging hormones wished she had given in."But that's the thing Nelly I really wanted 'another round'."
"Then call him up sweetie," Chanelle said.
"Are you insane? I mean although my sister can be a bit, you know," Camille started before mumbling, "she even brought him up," but continued, "she's still my sister."
Chanelle's carefree expression suddenly changed. "I'm sorry I didn't hear you clearly. It sounded as if you said 'she even brought him up'. Now I hope the ‘him’ in the sentence really isn't referring to that shithead Greg. Is it?"
Camille looked away. "Nelly she didn't mean—"
But Chanelle cut her off. "Because then I would have to strangle your no good sister. What a—"
"Nelly she didn't mean it. You know how she is sometimes."
Chanelle shook her head in disgust. "You need a better sister,” she said. “Actually you need a real sister."
"Nelly,” Camille began, “lay off her, okay? She didn’t mean it. Besides, you know what’s coming up."
Chanelle frowned and cast her eyes to the floor as she said, "Yeah, you’re right. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”
"Just make it up to me by being the first to try on my designs, alright?" Camille joked lightly.
"Oh such torture, but I accept," Chanelle said as she grinned. "And by the way if you don't want lover boy, I'll take him off your hands," she teased and Camille slapped her playfully. "Alright, alright….we'll share?"
"Nelly," Camille groaned and Chanelle laughed. "C'mon let's go." Camille knew that Chanelle was hopelessly in love with her fiancée and would never even think of cheating. Still, Camille hated to admit that she was jealous of their relationship. She remembered when she had one like that or rather had thought she had one like that.
"Hey, by the way your mother called and said to give her a call," Chanelle called out before heading out the front door.
"Okay," Camille shouted back. She hurriedly got her things together before meeting Chanelle at the entrance. The hands on her watch told her it was 10:30 and Camille felt like years had passed since the day started. She twisted the key, locking the doors. Camille never felt fear while doing the late shift or even closing up the diner, which she had done multiple times already.
"By the way I might be coming over soon so be prepared,” Chanelle said. “You know how it is when Stephonne is gone."
Camille nodded. "Okay, you know mi case is su casa. Later Nelly." They quickly hugged before going in their vehicles.
As soon as she reached home, Camille dropped the keys on the kitchen counter, grabbed her phone and dialed her mother's cell. After a couple of rings, her mother answered.
"Hey Mom," she said.
"Hey baby, how are you?" her mother asked. Camille noted the tiredness in her voice.
"Everything's good you know with school and all and I'll be coming to visit you soon." She heard her mom chuckle. Camille’s mom lived two towns away from her which was a couple hours drive but she still visited her mother at least once a month.
"Of course baby I'm just so proud of you know." She could hear her mom smiling through the phone.
Camille moved to her bedroom to change her clothes but decided against it since she needed to take a shower, and went to the living room instead to relax on the couch.
"You're going to move to a fancy place in New York and be the best designer around. I just wish your sister had her head on her shoulders like you do." Camille's heart dropped as she heard her mother sigh tiredly.
"What's up with Alice, I saw her today, and she seemed fine."
"Yes well… I don’t know why she won’t just enroll in the community college here. I just don’t know what she’s doing with herself. She graduated years ago and… I mean she's just nothing like you were."
"But we know that Alice doesn’t want to do the whole college thing. Besides, she just got promoted."
“Promoted?” her mother said. “Is that what she told you?”
“Yes,” Camille said, but now realized there was more to the story.
“She got fired, Camille. I can’t believe she told you she got promoted.”
“What?” Alice had lied to her?
"And she’s always leaving and coming home early in the morning. We're always arguing. And I'm too old and too tired to deal with that kind of behaviour."
Camille shook her head. "First of all mom, you're not old and secondly, I'll talk to Alice. Don't worry."
"Don't flatter me child. It gets you nowhere," her mother pointed out jokingly. "And I think with your father’s death... it’s affecting her more than I thought." Then her mother sighed. “God, I miss him.”
Camille's heart clenched as she heard her mom's voice break. "I miss him too, mom. I just hope you're not still overworking yourself."
Her mother sighed again. "I try not to but.."
The cracking of her heart was getting louder. But she had to hold it in. She had to stay strong.
But it wasn't easy because it wasn't fair.
Her father shouldn't have died the way he did. He shouldn't have died while trying to uphold justice. But he did. He was just doing his duty, apprehending a burglar. The thief's bullet shouldn't have pierced his heart, killing him instantly. Justice should have protected him, but it didn't. And now her family suffered the consequences for someone else's crime. Next month would be the hardest as it marked one year since that day.
Camille bit her lip hard as she held in her emotions and said, "Don't worry mom. It’ll get better. After all, weren't you the one who kept reminding me that time heals all." Her mother had told her those exact words after her horrible break up with her ex.
She smiled slightly as she heard her mother chuckling. "I don't know whether to smile or smack you for throwing my own words back at me."
"Whichever will make you feel better," Camille said, relieved that at least her mother had laughed.
"Yeah well," after a moment of silence her mother continued."I love you, you know."
"I know," Camille whispered, "I love you too."
"Well I gotta go baby, I'm still at the hospital. I'll talk to you later, but please set your sister straight. You know how much she looks up to you." Camille doubted that but she agreed for her mother's sake.
"Bye mom." After a moment, she heard the dial tone. She needed to get her mother to stop working so hard. Fate however, wasn't on her side as the hospital her mother worked at was already understaffed and needed all the nurses they could get. And Camille knew her mom was willingly taking on extra shifts just to distract herself.
And on top of all that…now she’d found out that Alice had lied to her?
What else didn’t she know?
