A shrill sound came awakening Jace.
He reached over and slammed his hand down on the alarm clock. However, the sound didn't stop. His hand scanned his nightstand until it came upon his phone.
He grabbed the offending object and brought it to his ears.
"Hello," he answered huskily from sleep.
"Jace!" a familiar voice came.
Fiona.
"What's up Fi?" he asked, tiredly.
"Where have you been, Jacen?" she asked in mock seriousness.
He sighed. "What do you want Fiona?" he asked dryly.
She gasped. "Oh, so this is how you're going to be?" she asked, sounding offended.
He sighed tiredly again. "You know I didn't mean it like that Fi."
"Well Jacen William Kraft, I was just calling to ask you where you were, since I haven't seen you since forever. On top of that, you barely call. What kind of best friend are you anyway?"
He chuckled. "I believe that Cynthia is your best friend."
She snorted. "That b***h. Ha! I wouldn't be friends with her if she were the last person on earth."
He laughed. "Pretty strong words for someone you've known since prep school."
She sighed and he could imagine her rolling her dark green eyes. "Will you work with me here, Jace? Anyway, she's a b***h because like you, she's gone off to god knows where, doing god knows who without telling me the details."
Jace rubbed a hand through his hair. The fact that Cynthia was probably cheating on him and he did not care, further proved his lack of feelings for her. Cynthia even knew this, which is why she was probably out getting revenge on him, hollow revenge, anyway.
"Sorry Jace." Her voice cut through his thoughts. "Anyway, as I was saying, New York is just not as fun without you, even with Mattie and Eddie here with me. I miss you Jace. When are you coming to visit me? I mean, where are you anyway? I went to Harvard to surprise you and you weren't there. Seeing as how you haven't graduated yet, that's a bit strange. Therefore, Jacen, you have two options; you come visit me or I will find you, and you know I have a damn good P.I."
Jace laughed. This was why he liked Fiona, she could always make him laugh.
"By the way, did you ever find your boyfriend?" he asked. "I mean ex," he clarified.
"Yes I did. He was with some cheap w***e in Honolulu. I cannot believe him. No one cheats on Fiona Lissandra Rohanson and gets away with it! That is one night he is never going to forget. Ever," she said, angrily.
"Do I even want to know what happened?" he said.
"Well if you come to New York…I’ll tell you all about it. But, remember Jace, if I have to find you, you will not like it. You know my methods can be a bit on the….unconventional side."
Jace laughed, oh, how he remembered. "Okay Fiona, relax. I'll come to New York and we'll hang out."
Fiona laughed. "And you have to tell me where you've been, what you've been doing, and who you've been doing Kay? And if you tell me some B.S that you haven't done anybody, I will scream Jace, right here and now on this phone, and you know my record is thirty seconds," she warned..
Jace knew she would live up to her threat. "Fine..." It was time someone knew about his 'other' life anyway, and Fiona was one of his closest friends.
Fiona laughed, lightly. "Like I said Jace, don't make me have to find you. I'll be telling Mat and Ed to be expecting your call. Love you! Muah!" He heard a click.
He put down his phone and stretched his limbs.
However, Fiona's phone call reminded him that he was indeed neglecting his life.
The one he was born to live.
He would have to tread cautiously so as to not arouse suspicion in either of his lives.
He tried to remember where the days went. After Camille dropped that bomb about the record label, he went to visit Rosie, and then later got a call from Alice. She was apologizing for Camille's behavior and asking to see him, which obviously meant that Camille hadn't told her the full story.
Speaking of Camille, she continued to intrigue him for some reason. She obviously wanted him and was trying to deny it…though she was doing a piss poor job of doing that. He just couldn't forget the one night they had long ago…and that was a feat in itself.
Jace thought she would have been elated that he wanted to break- up with Alice. After all, she had served her purpose and he didn't know how long he could tolerate her anyway. However, Camille had insisted on the opposite.
That was unexpected.
In a way, he almost admired her for that. For wanting to put her sister's feelings above her own, even though it was kind of a stupid thing to do in his mind.
But he couldn’t think about that anymore, especially now that he had that new plate of crap to deal with.
Jace had tried his damndest to make sure that the band would never be discovered.
The band had insisted on sending out demos, which conveniently got lost in the mail, thanks to the strings he pulled. Selfish, he knew. However, the band couldn’t be discovered.
But with this new thing…the whole recording them thing…well he hadn’t decided what to do with that yet. But for now he’d go with the flow before doing anything drastic.
Besides, really, what would be the chance that they’d actually get signed on?
Everything he had done before had been an excess of caution. But Jace didn’t really think they were actually good enough for a record label.
He dialed Finkley's Mechanic Car Shop.
A familiar gruff voice answered. "Yo?" Joe Finkley said.
"Fink, do you need me today?" Jace asked.
"Nah today's kina slow so you don't have to come in."
"Alright, later Fink." Jace clicked the end button on his phone. Jace could have done a number of things, but instead he decided to call his sister, Katherine. After a few rings, she answered.
"Kat—"She cut him off.
"Oh, perfect timing Jace. I was just about to call you to ask you if you could babysit Eliza for me. I have a class today." Eliza was his two-year-old niece. Even though she was in the terrible two stages, she really wasn't that bad. So, Jace agreed.
"Alright, I'm heading over there now." He told her while heading to the bathroom.
"Thanks a million Jace. By the way what are you doing with those two sisters?" she asked.
"That is none of your business sis." He heard her sigh.
"Jace can you not break their hearts. I mean they seem really nice.”
"Kat, if I wanted your advice, I would’ve asked."
“You told me all about Camille,” she said.
Jace ran a hand through his hair. “I told you to just let me know if you ever saw her come into the bar.”
“Yeah because you like her. That means something you know.”
“Kat…”
"Fine Jace. But just because you haven't been on the receiving end of a broken heart doesn't mean that you should go around breaking others."
Jace stayed silent. A broken heart was linked to love.
If it was one thing Jace did not believe in, it was love. He believed in lust and even having some sort of feelings to an extent. However, that was not love; it just didn't exist.
"Goodbye Kat." He hung up before she could respond.
After showering and dressing, he reached in less than fifteen minutes and walked up the stairs to her apartment.
After he knocked, she opened the door. Jace noted that she looked upset.
Kat gave him a hug and Jace hugged her back, hesitantly.
"You're not upset over something I said are you?" he asked. She chuckled before hitting him on the head.
"You're such an ass Jace. But I still love you, you know that?" she told him with a slight tired smile.
"So I've been told. So where is she?" Katherine hollered her daughter's name and Eliza came running.
"Uncle J!" she cried, flinging herself in his arms.
He let out a fake oomph as he grabbed her and hefted her on his shoulders. "Liza you're getting kinda heavy here. What have you been feeding her Kat?" he said teasingly. Kat slapped him playfully on his arm.
"Well anyway I'm off. Be good Liza," she told her daughter, sternly.
"Okay mommy," Eliza responded sweetly.
"Jace don't let her break anything and her schedule is on the fridge, so just keep to it." She kissed Eliza on the cheek before heading out the door.
He put Eliza down and knelt down to be eye level with her. "You're going to be a good girl right Liza?" he said.
She nodded fervently before running off. Jace snorted. He didn't know what people were always complaining about. This was a piece of cake.
That was until he heard a loud smash as something fell to the floor and broke.
A small voice came, "Oh, oh," before he heard a giggle.
Shit.
His sister was going to kill him.
