Chapter 16

I hand them their coffee and sit down. I take a sip of mine, the warm liquid warming my insides. I look over to see Levi in some jeans and a T-shirt. Hi Dad. Hi Grace. Morning son. Morning Levi. I hand him his coffee as he kisses my forehead. Thank you for bringing our girl home. No problem son. What were you thinking sweetpea? I'm not sure Dad. I place my fingers on my temple feeling a slight headache. You alright honey? Yeah I'm going to go shower. I kiss his forehead and head upstairs. God my head hurts. I head to the bathroom placing the plug in the tub and turning the water on. I go to the cabinet and get a few towels placing them on the stand beside the tub. I strip and lower myself in the tub. The hot water feels so good. I sigh in content, closing my eyes leaning my head against the towel on the back of the tub. I lay there for a while losing track of time. I drift off dreaming about the fire. The smell of burning hair and skin feel my nostrils. Then I feel someone shaking me. Voices in the distance, but I can't make them out. I feel like my body's numb then everything turns black.

Levi POV

I'm talking to Dad and Grace when I hear Kate scream. I rush upstairs to find her in the tub. She's asleep and having that damn nightmare I just know it. I try waking her up, but she doesn't budge. I call her name nothing. I pull her up outta the tub as her body goes limp. I wrap her in a towel rushing downstairs. Dad has the keys in hand. I say nothing as we rush out to his car. We got into the car rushing to the hospital. Grace called informing them we were on our way. I rush into the hospital when nurses rush over asking questions. They took her and made me stay back. I try to argue saying that I'm her husband. I feel a hand on my shoulder and look over. Son let them figure out what's wrong you'll only be in the way. Ok. Let me fill the paperwork out so you can go back. We wait for what feels like hours. I've asked the nurse several times only to receive no answer. Family of Kate? Dad and I jump up walking over to the doctor. Hi I'm Dr. Story I'm your wife's doctor. Your wife is stable right now,but she's still unresponsive. We are not sure why. We are admitting her for further testing. Well have a room ready soon. Your welcome to come back. Yes I'll come back. We walk in the emergency room and the smell of disinfectant fills my nose. We reach her bed. She looks so peaceful sleeping. I walk over and hold her hand kissing her forehead as the tears form. God please let her be ok. I hear a throat clearing. I turn to see a nurse. Mr. Light we are taking her to her room now if you'd like to follow. Yes I would. We head out getting on the elevator. We reached her room and the nurses set her up. They walk out while I grab a chair setting beside her. I call Dad and ask him to have Grace pack Kate a few things. He leaves to go get her and something to eat. Nurses come in and out checking her vitals and taking blood. There's a light knock I look up. Hey how is she doing? ask Grace. We don't know yet , but she's sleeping peacefully. Good, we can set with her if you'd like to go eat. I'm not hungry. Son you need to eat. Well be right here if anything changes. Also Lea is fine she's content and well go check on her in a little bit. Thank you. They nod as we sit there waiting. They took her to do some scan. I try to focus on a few emails but I can't. Here eat this sandwich says Grace. I take the turkey sandwich and eat silently. Son it'll be ok she's strong and stubborn always remember that. Hell she married you didn't she. I chuckle yes she did. Soon they bring her back and I'm back holding her hand. Dad and Grace left to check on Lea. Baby please wake up. I climb bed with her pulling her in close. Tears stream down my face and I fall asleep.

Kate POV

I hear a beeping noise thinking it's an alarm. I try opening my eyes.Ugh my head still hurts. I finally got them open. Where the hell am I? I look over to see Levi. His tear stain face breaks my heart. I place my hand on his check. He stirs and opens his eyes. He looks at me shocked then pulls me. Baby you're finally awake. How long have I been out? A day. Oh, honey what happened? Let me get the doctor and he can tell you. He leaves and comes back with a cute petite blond who looks to be early 20s maybe an intern. Hello Mrs. Light it's good to see you awake. I'm Meg, your nurse. How are you feeling? A little groggy and light headed. My head still hurts. Can I please have some water? She grabs a pitcher and fills a glass handing it to me. I gulp the cold water down. She begins checking my vitals. When will the doctor be here? I'm not sure , but as soon as I'm finished I'll inform him you’re awake. Do you need anything? No I'm good thank you. She leaves the room and I look at Levi. Honey what happened? You went to take a shower then I heard your screaming and you wouldn't wake up then you went limp. That's all I know. Oh honey. He comes over laying beside me placing his head on my chest. You scared me. I'm sorry hopefully we'll know what's going on soon.
