Chapter 3

I feel him come up behind me wrapping his around me from behind. I take a deep breath trying to calm myself. I set the stuff down and turn around. Levi what are you doing? He leads me to the island, placing me on the stool. I'm making us breakfast. The way he says it makes my heart melt like butter. How is it that we are getting along now? This is too good to be true, it won't last. Not realizing I said this out loud his smile fades and he tries to stay calm but I see the hurt in his eyes I grab his hand. Levi we're only doing this as a bluff right? Yes we are. He lets go and goes to cooking. I watch him as he moves around banging dishes. I get up off the stool and walk over to him. I took the cup away and placed it on the counter. I turn the stove off and take his hands holding them in mine. Levi, what do you want? I want to make us breakfast. Levi please tell me what you want. I see the hurt and confusion. I've been down this road before. He clears his throat Kate, I wanna make breakfast.. I sigh knowing he's not going to go any further. I turn the stove back on and help finish. We gather our plates and eat in silence. Levi... he looks over with jam on his lips .. I try not to laugh. He glares at me.. what is it this time.. Levi you have.. oh let me get it .. without thinking I lean in closer stealing a kiss.. He looks as confused as I do. I set back on my stool and finished eating.. He stares at me waiting for me to speak.. I bite my lower lip not knowing what to say. He glares even more. I have no answer and I don't know what to say. My heart pounds trying to find the words that won't escape. I picture the day we got married. He looked so handsome that day and we were so happy. My heart breaks longing for that love again. He brings me back to reality all cotton mouth. Tears run down my face, all the heartache and fighting comes out all at once I run upstairs he chases after me. Knocking on the door he comes in. Kate what is wrong? I throw my arms around him, pulling him in for a kiss that's been long over, do our tongues swirl, I press harder into him. Unable to contain any longer fresh tears in my eyes. I look in his eyes Levi, I love you. Why does it have to be this way? I see every emotion cross his face. We stare at each other holding my breath. I wait, then he turns around and walks out. I stand there gapping. I try to gather my feelings. I'm angry,hurt and feeling even more confused. I fall on the bed letting the tears flow. He comes back in holding papers. Anger rising I set up. He leaves the papers on the night stand. I curl in the ball and lay there crying until I fall asleep. I feel the heat from the fire coming closer. I try to scream but my lungs fill with smoke. I choke trying to get free. I feel a hand on my shoulder trying to bring me back from this nightmare.. Kate?? Kate wake up, yells Levi. I open my eyes seeing Levi above me with concern in his eyes. I feel cold and sweaty heat rises to my cheeks. Levi, what are you doing? I heard a nose and you were on the floor screaming and. He stops mid sentence. He pulls me close holding me so tight he runs his fingers through my hair. You scared the s**t out of me. Kate what's going on? I breathe in sharply.. How do I even begin? I look into his blue eyes and try to muster the courage to tell him of my nightmares that started after he left. Levi, the nightmares started after you left. There's fire everywhere and every time I try to escape the fire rises and I can't escape and I wake up in a cold sweat. He holds me as though trying to protect me from the nightmares. I calm the longer he holds just sitting there in silence. Then my stomach growls grrrr... You wanna order chinese! You read my mind. There's an ease about him now. I looked over to see the papers sitting there on the nightstand and my face flushed with anger. Levi? Why did you bring those? I point at the papers. He realizes what I'm pointing at and shuffles his feet. avoiding the question. Ok fine I'll go order the chinese. I ran down the stairs leaving him. He comes slowly down the stairs holding the papers. I try not to let him see me watching.. he turns the corner in the kitchen and glares at me. What Levi? What is it? Why do you even have those?
