The safehouse was compromised.
Xander woke to the sound of gunfire, his body reacting before his mind caught up. He rolled out of bed, grabbing his weapon, his heart pounding. The building was burning, flames licking at the walls.
"Cross!" Reynolds shouted. "They found us!"
Xander moved through the chaos, his weapon blazing. Figures in black tactical gear swarmed the compound, their movements fluid and precise. They were professionals, trained killers.
But they were also familiar. Xander had seen this before. In the Urals. In Siberia. In the Arctic.
The Legacy.
He found Anya in the main room, her face pale, her hands shaking. "They came out of nowhere. There must be dozens of them."
"Get to the basement," Xander said. "Now!"
She ran, and he turned to face the attackers. The battle was brutal, chaotic. He took down one, then another. But there were too many.
And then they retreated as suddenly as they'd come.
Xander stood in the wreckage, his chest heaving. The safehouse was destroyed. The supplies were gone. But they were alive.
Reynolds appeared at his side, his face grim. "We need to move. They'll be back."
"Not yet." Xander's voice was hard. "We need to find out how they found us."
---
The survivors gathered in the forest.
Xander sat on a fallen log, his face pale, his eyes hollow. The others were scattered around him, their faces drawn with exhaustion.
"There's a mole," he said. "Someone inside our network is feeding information to the Legacy."
"How do you know?" Davis asked.
"Because this is the third safehouse they've hit in a month. They knew exactly where we were. They knew our security protocols."
Reynolds stepped forward. "Then we find the mole. We find out who's been betraying us."
---
The search took days.
Xander worked through his contacts, questioning everyone who had access to the safehouse locations. Most of them were cleared. But one of them—a young woman named Irina—was acting suspiciously.
She was a former intelligence officer who'd been working with Elena's network. She'd been quiet, helpful, always willing to do whatever was asked. But when Xander questioned her, her answers were evasive.
"I haven't told anyone anything," she said. "I've been loyal to this cause from the beginning."
"Then why did you disappear the night of the attack?"
"I was scared. I ran."
"You ran because you knew what was coming." Xander's voice was hard. "You knew they were going to hit the safehouse."
Irina's face went pale. "I didn't... I couldn't..."
"You led them to us." Xander's voice was cold. "You betrayed everyone who trusted you."
"I had no choice." Her voice was a whisper. "They have my family. My husband, my children. They said they'd kill them if I didn't cooperate."
Xander was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly.
"I understand," he said. "I've been in that position before."
"Then you know why I did it."
"I know." Xander's voice was hard. "But I also know that you can't be trusted. Not anymore."
---
Irina was taken to a holding cell.
Xander sat in the main room, staring at the wall. The betrayal stung, but he understood it. He'd been in that position before, forced to choose between his principles and the people he loved.
Anya appeared at his side, her hand on his shoulder. "You okay?"
"I'm fine." Xander's voice was quiet. "Just thinking."
"About what?"
"About how easy it is to lose yourself. How easy it is to make the wrong choice when you're scared."
Anya was silent for a long moment. "You made the right choices. You always have."
"I don't know about that." Xander's voice was soft. "I've made a lot of mistakes. A lot of people have died because of those mistakes."
"You can't save everyone, Xander. You can only do your best."
"I know." He turned to her. "But sometimes my best isn't enough."
Anya took his hand. "It's enough for me."
---
The days passed, and they began to rebuild.
The network was fractured, but it wasn't broken. Xander reached out to his contacts, building a new safehouse, a new base of operations. It was slow work, but it was progress.
And then the message came.
Xander was in the new safehouse, organizing supplies, when his phone buzzed. He pulled it out, his heart pounding.
The message was from an unknown number.
You think you've found safety, Cross? You think you've escaped? The Legacy is everywhere. They're watching you, waiting for the right moment to strike.
You can't hide from them. You can't hide from us.
We're coming for you.
Xander stared at the message. The Legacy was still out there. They were still hunting him.
Anya appeared at his side, her face pale. "Who sent that?"
"I don't know. But they know where we are."
"Then we need to move. Now."
---
The evacuation was chaotic.
Xander moved through the safehouse, gathering supplies, organizing the soldiers. The others were with him—Reynolds, Davis, Thompson, Anya. They worked together, moving quickly.
"We need to get everyone out," Xander said. "Now!"
They fled into the forest, the safehouse burning behind them.
---
The journey was long and brutal.
Xander walked through the forest, his leg screaming with every step. The others were with him, their faces pale, their bodies exhausted. They'd lost everything again.
Reynolds appeared at his side, his face grim. "We need to find a new safehouse. Somewhere they won't find us."
"I know." Xander's voice was hard. "But I don't know where to go."
"I do." Reynolds's voice was quiet. "There's a place. An old bunker in the mountains. It's off the grid, hidden from satellite imagery."
"Then that's where we go."
---
The bunker was hidden in a valley, surrounded by mountains.
Xander moved through the darkness, his weapon ready. The bunker was old, abandoned, but it was intact. It would provide shelter, protection.
"This is it," Reynolds said. "We'll be safe here."
"For now." Xander's voice was hard. "But the Legacy is still out there. They're still hunting us."
"Then we'll fight them. We'll stop them."
"We will." Xander's voice was hard. "We always do."
---
The days passed, and they began to rebuild.
The bunker became a new safehouse, a new base of operations. Xander worked with the others, organizing supplies, planning their next move.
Anya was at his side, her hand in his. "We're going to make it. We're going to stop them."
"I know." Xander's voice was soft. "Because we don't have a choice."
---
The message came on a Monday.
Xander was in the bunker's main room, studying the files they'd recovered from the Legacy's bases. There was so much information, so many details about their network. But there was also a gap—a missing piece that he couldn't find.
And then his phone buzzed.
The message was from an unknown number.
You think you're safe, Cross? You think you've found a place to hide? I know where you are. I've been tracking you the whole time.
I'm coming for you. And I'm bringing the Legacy with me.
Xander stared at the message. The Legacy was still out there. They were still hunting him.
Anya appeared at his side, her face pale. "Who sent that?"
"I don't know." Xander's voice was hard. "But they know where we are."
"Then we need to move. Now."
"Not yet." Xander's voice was hard. "We need to find out who's been tracking us. We need to stop them."
"How?"
"We find the source. We find the person who's been feeding them information."
Anya was silent for a long moment. "Irina."
"She's in a holding cell. She's the only one who could have told them."
"Then we question her. We find out what she knows."
---
The interrogation took hours.
Xander sat in the room with Irina, his face calm, his voice steady. She was defiant at first, refusing to answer his questions. But slowly, she began to crack.
"They have my family," she said. "My husband, my children. They said they'd kill them if I didn't cooperate."
"Who are they?"
"I don't know their names. But they're part of the Legacy. They've been tracking you for months."
"How do they communicate with you?"
"Through a satellite phone. They call me once a week, give me instructions."
"Where is the phone?"
"It's hidden in my old safehouse. In the forest."
---
The journey to the old safehouse was dangerous.
Xander moved through the forest, his weapon ready. The others were with him—Reynolds, Davis, Thompson, Anya. They moved quickly, silently.
The phone was hidden under a loose floorboard. Xander found it and pulled it out, his heart pounding.
"This is it," he said. "The link to the Legacy."
"Then we use it." Anya's voice was hard. "We find out who they are. We stop them."
---
The call came at midnight.
Xander answered the phone, his voice steady. "This is Cross."
"Sergeant Cross." The voice was cold, familiar. "I was wondering when you'd find this phone."
"Who is this?"
"My name is Dmitri Volkov. I'm Viktor Volkov's brother."
Xander's blood ran cold. Another Volkov. Another enemy.
"I thought Viktor was the only one," Xander said. "I thought the Legacy was dead."
"The Legacy is never dead." Dmitri's voice was hard. "It's just waiting for the right moment to strike. And that moment is coming."
"What are you planning?"
"You'll find out soon enough." Dmitri's voice was cold. "But first, I'm going to destroy everything you love. Everyone you care about."
"You're not going to succeed. I'm going to stop you."
"You can try." Dmitri laughed, a cold, bitter sound. "But you're going to fail. Just like you failed to save your men. Just like you failed to save Maya Reyes. Just like you've failed everyone who ever trusted you."
Xander was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke.
"I'm coming for you, Dmitri. And when I find you, I'm going to make you pay."
"You can try." Dmitri's voice was cold. "But you'll never find me. I'm a ghost, just like you."
The line went dead.
Xander stared at the phone. The Legacy was still out there. They were still hunting him.
But he was hunting them too.
