Chapter 12: Damon POV I am still floored that Clara let me mark her on Saturday. On Sunday she asked me to go to church with her. She had gone alone the previous weekend but she was nervous because they had asked her to sing in the choir. I told her I would be honored to escort her. It was the community church I'd attended as a pup. We stopped when I shifted at age 13. I had a lot of trouble controlling it for a long time. Eventually it just became our normal not to attend. She sang beautifully. She really was an angel. She wore a high neck sleeveless dress that stopped at her knee and covered her mark. She knew the importance of the mark and I assured her even if she covered it up anyone close enough could smell that she was marked. She seemed a little self-conscious about showing it off. "You don't have to if you don't want to. Just know you are safer with it." She smiled and nodded when I said that. She was finally starting to trust me. On Monday morning I picked Clara, Bobby, and Billy up to go to school. "I spoke to the front desk receptionist Beverly and she has your schedule, locker information, and everything you need. We will stop there first. Then I will give you a tour before your first class." She nodded at me. I noticed that her mark was visible this time and smiled to myself. She was wearing a really cute off-the-shoulder pink top with denim jeans and a denim jacket. "New clothes?" I asked, teasing. She laughed and pushed at my arm. I had taken her shopping after church on Sunday. She said none of her clothes were really to her liking, that the mutt had picked them out for her. I told her to go crazy. She fought me the whole time but I spent a few hundred dollars on her. "You can burn your old clothes if you want," I said as we drove to the pack high school. She stared at me like I was crazy. "I plan to donate them. I'm sure someone else could get some enjoyment out of them." Bobby watched me carefully. I could see his strong stare in the rearview mirror. Billy, the younger brother, was smiling and talking to Clara. Bobby still had some reservations about my relationship with Clara. He had had a fit when he found out I marked her. He called me on the phone and cursed me out until I told him Clara told me to do it. There was another string of curses. I heard him ask Clara and she told him it was true. "Fuck." He muttered it a few times and then came back on the phone and apologized. I get it. I do. Clara is his cousin, his family. She is a girl who has been through a lot. Any guy, family or not, would want to protect her. Bobby would have made a great werewolf. Too bad he comes from a pure human bloodline. If he had a wolf gene we could turn him but I didn't sense any wolf in his blood. Clara, on the other hand, had a minor amount. I assume it was from her mother's side, distant relatives most likely. I told Jay I was going to wait to discuss turning with her. Marking was a big enough step for now. Everything had it's time and place. When we arrived at school Clara linked me that she was nervous. I loved that we could mindlink now that I had marked her. "I'm here for you," I linked back. She gave me a small smile. "You ready?" I asked out loud. Everyone nodded. I opened Clara's door for her and offered my hand. "Are you sure?" She asked. I smiled, "Of course. I want everyone to see I have the prettiest mate in school." She rolled her eyes at me playfully and took my hand. We intertwined our fingers as we walked across the parking lot. At reception we retrieved her schedule and other information. She had locker 201. I had locker 202. She smirked at me. "Coincidence?" She asked, popping an eyebrow at me. I chuckled, "Totally." When she saw we had the same class schedule she laughed. "Any other so called coincidences you have for me Mister Future Alpha?" I nodded, "Just one," I said. I lifted her off the ground and pressed my lips to hers. She giggled. Goddess did I love her giggles. It was like an angel serenading me with her joy. I was surprised. Despite missing several weeks of school Clara  was way ahead of us. Maybe the city school was advanced? I asked her about it as we sat in the cafeteria eating our lunch. "I doubt it. Same curriculum and books basically. I didn't have a social life so I read all of my textbooks front to back." The very idea of doing that made me picture myself ripping my eyes out. I almost asked why she said she had no social life but then I remembered all of the comments she made about the mongrel making her quit all of her extracurriculars. That gave me an idea. "Baby?" She looked over at me lovingly. "Yes, Da-Mate?" She was still practicing using words like MATE. It was adorable. "Why don't you join the cheerleading team here? It would be great exercise." She stared at me with surprise in her hazel eyes. "Are you serious? I mean, what about church choir? Please don't ask me to quit!" She looked so anxious all of a sudden. I cupped her cheeks with my hands and said, "Mate, I'm not here to stifle you. I'm here to support you and help you be the best version of you that you can achieve. If you want to do multiple extracurriculars I will support you. Whatever your heart desires. You just need to say the word." She nodded her head and turned my hand around to kiss my palm. Her soft lips on my flesh sent shockwaves through my body. Goddess, how could you torture me this way? My mate was too beautiful and too sexy. Ughhhh.
