Danger
Light shimmered into the alley, a sign is was early morning. Groaning, a strawberry blonde haired girl pushed herself up into a sitting position, slightly leaning against a bin. Her thin hands were paler than the day before but she didn’t have any other options but the alley she was currently in.
A grubby t-shirt stuck to her chest, a large amount of dirt smeared on it. Quickly, the girl reached around her neck desperately, bringing a necklace out. As soon as she held the jewellery in her hand her shoulders relaxed slightly.
Silently, she waited until a man exited the building next to her, adjusting his hat whilst entering a taxi that had been there for a few minutes. The small yellow vehicle sped away down the road. Watching it reach the end and turn around, the girl walked back down the alley.
Two stories above from her the window was open, it was his apartment. The past month he’d had issues with heating so the man had to open his windows to avoid a fire. This of course helped the girl greatly.
“Laviania,” A voice in her head pleaded, her inner wolf quite literally,” Please you know how much I hate you doing this. And I know you do too,”
Sighing Laviania pushed the large bin she’d slept against close to the window. After multiple times doing this, it became second nature so the small jump that closed the space between the two. Closing the lid of the bin, she climbed on top and launched herself towards the window. Grabbing onto the ledge (which even after numerous times doing it, it was still a challenge), the girl pulled herself into the small apartment.
Overall the main room was quaint but cosy. There was a red coloured sofa that was worn out but still seemed radiant, at least the worn out texture meant it was used. Opposite was an old tv, just like everything else in the room it had an oldish style to it. The guy was roughly in his forties so it added up.
Sneaking through the hallway she opened the door to the bathroom. A tall shower stood in the corner. Throwing her bag on the floor she began undressing herself. The mirror to her left showed how her bones were poking against her skin, they looked sharp as if they could rip her in two. Her cheeks were shallowed, the skin was slightly loose from the lack of body to hold it up.
“I look awful,” Laviania mumbled with a dull tone,” I’m sorry if you’re suffering too Rae,”
There was a pause in her head as she waited for an answer,” No I’m not suffering. I’m the reason you are. Because I’m part of your soul I’m taking most of the food you eat which we both know isn’t a lot,”
“Don’t talk like that Rae, if it weren’t for you I wouldn’t get to eat at all. You help me hunt,” Lavi said with a faint smile.
The strawberry-blonde opened the shower door and turned the water on. Warm streams jetted onto her bare skin as she leaned into the warmth. Though she didn’t have time to enjoy it, she had to get in and out quickly.
In less than five minutes she was out again, wrapped in a towel she’d found bundled on the floor. After quickly running a brush through her hair Laviania three on the cleanest clothes she had in her backpack. She was dressed in some black leggings and a red t-shirt. There was a stain on the side but she could hide it with her black hoodie she wore overtop. Later, she decided, if she got enough change she would go the cheapest launderette in the neighbourhood.
Double checking that an emerald necklace was still fastened tightly around her neck, Laviania hid it under her collar. There was a certain magic inside it that could hide her wolf scent from any other being. This was she could secretly live in the territory without being detected and most likely killed. It was just a little weight off of her shoulders with everything else she had to do.
As she walked back to the room she entered into, Laviania felt her heart jolt. The sound of the door unlocking caused her senses to heighten. Thinking on her feet she opened a cupboard door and crammed herself inside, putting her foot slightly out so the cupboard opened ajar.
Suddenly the unlocking sound ceased. Quiet ringed through the small apartment. Her shoulders relaxed as Laviania pushed the cupboard door open a tad more, though she quickly retracted it. It wasn’t the man who owned the apartment but two men dressed in black with baklavas over their heads entered. They were towering around in the room, walking silently but touching every possession with gloves hands. Every so often they would move an object between their hands before placing it carefully into a duffel bag.
Laviania held her breath, she couldn’t come out now because they’d question why she was hiding. If she stayed hidden, they might find her as they were slowly rummaging through drawers and other cupboards. They kept getting closer and closer.
However they soon stopped and looked towards the door. A beautiful brown haired woman had entered, her hair cut into a bob. Laviania let out a sigh of relief until the two men started walking towards the woman. Her eyes widened as she desperately tried to turn around and escape but the burglars grabbed her hair and pulled her back.
“Don’t do anything stupid,” Rae pleaded but Laviania tuned her out.
“Leave her alone!” Lavi cried, bursting out of the cupboard, blatantly ignoring Rae’s warning.
The two men turned around and glared at her. Quickly one walked towards her whilst the other grabbed her from behind. Flinging her legs, Laviania used all her strength to kick the man behind her. He grunted, tightening his grip on her arms causing her to wince. If only she’d eaten a bit more, her wolf would have the strength to fight them off.
“Laviania transform!” Rae ordered,” We can worry about the damage later!”
A punch came to her stomach, making it spark a feeling of pain within. She had no other choice as the woman would soon be beaten as well. Closing her eyes, Laviania called her wolf out.
Shifting hurt her bones as she hadn’t done it in such a long time. Her bones broke and stretched out, becoming wolf-like and furry. A snout grew on her face as she gained ears and her eyes became a fiery red. Compared to other wolves she was thin and short, but it was still enough to startle the men.
“What the hell!?” The tallest man said, stepping back.
Laviania’s eyes landed on her necklace that had broke off during her transformation. Growling she pulled it under her to hide it from the thieves. The slowly started backing towards the door.
Her wolf had light ginger-brown coloured fur that stopped at her stomach where it was white. The fur on Rae’s face was a dirty-whitish colour but it was beautiful. Eyes shining, the red sent a demonic stare at the dangers in the room.
“Forget this,” The shorter one huffed, opening the door, shoving the woman out of the way,” Leave her to the beast,”
Growling, Rae launched at them, snarling loudly. She bared her teeth, finding slight joy in the way the men shook as they frantically rushed into the hall and down the stairs. Finally stopping her growling, Rae looked to the woman who had nearly been beaten by the men.
“But how?” She wondered aloud, touching Rae on the muzzle,” I mean how haven’t they..?”
As she trailed of Rae realised she wasn’t questioning her ability to change but how she didn’t know. Eyes going wide, Rae dropped the shift, becoming Laviania again. Her clothes were ripped and shredded but nothing her jacket couldn’t hide, it could maybe be some kind of style.
Pain shook her body but Lavi couldn’t just shake it off. Shifting with such low energy really took a toll, the punches weren’t healing. That was the least of her worries. She turned around quickly, desperately trying to find her necklace. It was sprawled on the floor.
“Thank god!” She exclaimed as the clip fastened around her neck.
A sudden cough jolted her attention as she looked back to the short brown haired woman. Her green eyes bore a million questions but her expression showed annoyance. A single eyebrow was raised as she examined the girl on the floor who quickly tucked a necklace under her collar.
The woman waited for Laviania’s attention to return to her,” Now you’re going to have to answer a few questions,”
Lavi stood up and back away slowly,” Sure,”
“I’m sure you are aware of what I am,” The woman said emotionlessly, Laviania then got a whiff of her scent- the adrenaline must have blocked her scent out,” And I know what you are because I’ve obviously seen. You must mask your scent with that, but what I wanna know is why you are in my uncle’s home? You’re a little too young to be a girlfriend and he wouldn’t pick up your scent cause he’s human. So why were you here?”
Laviania felt her back reach the window sill,” I just needed a shower I’m sorry I won’t return,”
The woman was briefly confused before she realised what Laviania was doing. Jumping out of the window, the teen barely missed the woman trying to pull her back in.
Missing the dumpster, Lavi landed onto the pavement. She only spent a second on her feet before she fell onto the ground, pain shooting up get ankles. They felt weak but she couldn’t hang around. Rushing back to her feet, Laviania sprinted away down an alley, following its twists and and turns. Her breath hitched in her lungs but she was used to endurance runs.
The sound of paws following her was obvious, the woman had shifted and was following her but she wouldn’t pick up the scent. Laviania knew that if she made it to the street she’d definitely loose her. There would be too many people out now for a wolf that towered a bear.
Finally she made it onto the street, breathless. Turning her head Lavi knew what street she was on. The school was twenty minutes away, if she followed the main road. That was perfect, the more people the less likely the woman would be chasing her. The scent was already fading.
She couldn’t be found now, not after she’d worked so hard to get here. There was nothing for her anywhere else, here was a lot to her.
