Prologue
CHRISTIAN
"Honey, are you seeing anyone special?" mother asked in a sweet as saccharine voice.
I stifled a groan. I knew I should have put off calling her back, but i’d already done that. Three times in a row.
Mallory Taylor was a patient and understanding mom and she understood that I didn't like talking on phone but she did have her limits.
After the fourth unreturned call she would start to worry. I love my mom and I don't want her to worry unnecessarily.
Besides when Mallory Taylor was worried, she might get her husband involved. And if he got involved, things would be done.
The two of them might end up chartering a private jet to track me down to the middle of the Mississippi.
Seriously. It could happen. Mallory and Bradley Taylor had a lot of money and deep connections. When they track you down, you get found.
So now and then I had no choice but to call her back. Both to keep her from worrying and to keep from getting rescued-whether I needed it or not.
She was still talking, all cheerful and loving-and way too determined.
"I only asked because I have several amazing women I want you to meet this time,do remember my old friend Kathy Donahue?"
I did. Vaguely. She used to visit when I was twelve before she got married to husband number three and moved to Connecticut.
Not that it would matter if i knew her or not. I know what she had.
Daughters.
At least two, probably four or five.
Mom continued not bothered by my silence "Kathy and I go way back you know. We met in high school. And I've met three of her girls. Brilliant, well raised, beautiful women. Tara,Mary and Cybil. It so happens they'll be in town my birthday week..."
Oh boy.
"And I've been thinking, wouldn't it be nice to invite them over the weekend?,maybe Friday or Saturday, what do you think?" Before i could tell her a firm no she went on "maybe Kathy and her girls would even like to come to my birthday dinner, you'll be there right?."
What made me so damn special?.
"Of course mom"
Maybe because as of right now,i was her only son who had yet to be in a serious relationship and there had been some speculations of me being gay - not that it matters. I don't have time for a relationship.
Unfortunately that seemed to have triggered a desire in her to help find the woman for me.
"Oh Christian,I'm so glad you'll be there"
"Wouldn't miss it" i muttered though I wish I could but I knew she would be hurt "Look mom I really don't need any help finding a girlfriend,I'll have one when I'm ready"
"Of course you don't,but opportunity is everything. You're always off working in an office somewhere, how many good women are you going to meet while working?."
"Mom,I..."
She didn't even let me finish my sentence "None!. Look i'm so glad we were able to have this conversation but I have to go. Have a nice day honey,Bye bye."
Then she hung up.
