Chapter One
I couldn't believe what I was looking at. I was hoping someone would tap and tell me to wake up from the nightmare I was having. I was watching my older sister moaning out loud thanks to my fiancé. I couldn't believe I had rushed home with the plan to surprise him with his favorite food only to be surprised myself. Right there on our proposed matrimonial bed was my older sister Amanda and my fiancé, far too gone to notice my presence. I was drawn between screaming out loud or just walking away from the scene. I found myself walking away. I guess my legs made a choice, but just when I was going to walk away, I changed my mind. I walked into the kitchen to prepare a meal. I was hurt, but that wasn't reason enough for me to starve. If I was going to fight, I needed strength. Thirty minutes later, I sat eating some pasta when they came into the kitchen still oblivious of my presence since they were kissing. Seeing they were going to keep at it, I cleared my throat, alerting them of my presence, making them jump apart. "Hi, Amanda, hi Ben," I said, smiling at them. "The hell, Layla, you scared the living daylights out of me," Amanda exclaimed. "Oh my, did I?", I asked curiously, staring at her almost naked self. "Layla", Ben groaned, "but you said you would not be home tonight". "Oh well, I changed my mind." "And guess what, I came home to meet my dearest sister in bed with my boyfriend". "How beautiful". I exclaimed sarcastically. "So who wants to go first?" I asked, still smiling though I was dying inside looking from Ben to Mandy. "Layla, it's not what you think..." Ben stuttered, which almost made me laugh because Ben never stuttered. "Oh please, Ben, enough with this, just tell her the truth already" Mandy said without a bit of remorse. "Right, Ben, what is the truth? " "Because I clearly saw you both stark naked in bed." Holding his head, Ben groaned, "Layla, I am sorry okay, but you have been so busy with the store that you barely have anytime for me". "I am a man and I have needs..." "What the hell did you just say?" I asked, cutting in. I could not believe my ears, the work Ben was complaining about was what had funded his business and the wedding we were planning in two months. "First, how long has this been going on for?" "One year and six months" Mandy said, pouring herself a cup of water. "Jesus," I whispered suddenly, feeling like the walls were closing in on me as I began to take deep breaths. I was not going to break down in front of them, they didn't deserve my tears. "Layla, I know you have been a good girlfriend, but the truth is, Amanda satisfies me, which is something I know you can never do". "Why string me along, why propose to me?" I questioned, struggling hard not to cry, but two tears dropped anyway. I guess I was not so strong after all. "Layla, you are the picture of a perfect girlfriend". "Do you know how many clients I have gotten because I was with you?" Ben asked, chuckling. "You were perfect for the job, but now I have made a name for myself, I don't need your influence anymore". I was shocked, I had wasted five years of my life on a relationship I thought would end in marriage. I had always envisioned being married to Ben in the future and somewhere along the line two or three children would pop up to complete our cute little family. "Lest I forget, nobody should know about this". "I still need to close the deal with the Rivers, so keep your mouth shut." Hearing this I shivered as I found it hard to believe that just yesterday, Ben had proposed to me and made so many promises that had me dreaming of the next eighty years of our lives together as a couple. "One word of this to another soul, and you will regret your decision for life," he continued, sternly threatening me. Teary-eyed, I turned to Amanda, "Amanda, even if Ben was going to hurt me it shouldn't have been with your help." Laughing, she dropped the cup she was holding and turned to me, "Sis, I fell in love with Ben first, but, like always, you take what belongs to me, but this time around I won". "You know what they say?" "He who laughs last laughs best" she concluded, still laughing. I decided I was done with either of them taunting me. I was going to sleep but before that I had to make sure both of them left. "You know what, I have had enough of both of you, so see yourselves out". Chuckling, Ben walked to the fridge, "I'm afraid Darling, the only person seeing themselves out has to be you". "What do you mean?" I asked furiously. "You seem to have forgotten I own this house, Baby girl". "The hell do you mean Ben, I paid for this house with my hard-earned money" I yelled, losing my cool. "Sweet heart you paid for it, but my name is on the deed". He was right, I had foolishly let him handle the buying of the property and when I had questioned him he told me it didn't matter since we were getting married. "I have had enough, Layla, it's time for you to leave". Amanda came out dragging some boxes. "I have been so nice," she continued. "I packed your stuff so if you do not want me to throw you out, leave quietly." she concluded, opening the door as she pointed me out. I looked at Ben hoping he would intervene, but he wasn't even looking my way. Defeated, I walked towards my boxes, wondering where on earth I would sleep tonight, when my phone rang, interrupting my movement. Taking it out of my bag, I noticed it was a bit late, meaning whoever was calling definitely had something so urgent to tell me that they could not wait till tomorrow. "Hello, Layla Smith on the line..." "Miss Smith, I am sorry to be calling this late, but there has been a fire..."
