How the story starts

1083 Words
It was just an average sunny Saturday when Rose and I went outside. I was waiting next to the car that we would be taking to the local mall about 30 minutes away from my house. We were waiting on Anton and another gaurd. I felt bad that I couldn't even remeber his name. I wanted to say his name was like Josh or something to that extent but I'm not completely sure. Earlier in the week I had told Rose that I wanted to go to the mall because I needed some more clothes for when the social season would start up again. At first she thought that was a little odd because I had never really participated in this type of thing before. After I did some convinving she decided that we could go. We waited for another couple of minutes then Rose fished her phone out of her jacket pocket and called Anton.      "Yo, where are you? We are waiting for you next the car and we don't have all day, Anton." A few moments of silence while I'm guessing Anton replied with were they were and how long they would be.     "I really don't care that Jack can't find his missing shoe. Tell him to be a big boy about it and to just out on another pair. We are losing daylight." With that last part she ended the call and turned towards me.     "Seriously he can't find the other shoe? That's why things are running late?" I looked up to her from where I had sat down in the shade. She walked over and squatted down next to me. Having her this close to me made me feel safe. More so then I ever felt with any of my other guards.      "Yea, I still don't know why he got as far as he did with your parents but it's clearly not because he can be on time." She rolled her eyes.     "Yea, I don't either. Mom said she liked his resume and Dad said that he came from a long line of trusted people." I shrugged. I was just anxious to get to the mall. I need to be out of the house and I really did need some more clothes. It wasn't for the upcoming social season though.     If I was being honest with myself it’s because I wanted to try on clothes and see her reaction to them. I wanted to see the way that she looked at me. I especially like the reactions that she gave when she liked something more than she should. Rose could be a hard person to read at times. Especially if you don't know her and you don't specifivally go looking for her tells.      Sometimes it's a subtle as her eyes going wide and raising an eyebrow at me. Other times iots more noticible, Like when she starts to turn red and she makes a nonsensical excuse to be anywhere else.     I heard Anton and Jack (apparently) before I saw them. Anton was yelling at him about making the rest of us late and how this wasn't going to be tolerated in the future.      "Now apologise to Kat for making her wait on your sorry ass." Anton said to Jack. Jack had his head downcast and didn't even bother to try and look me in the eyes when he said     "I'm sorry that we will be late Kat. I hope you can forgive me." I stand up from where I had been rested and stretched. "I forgive you but we should be going now." I gestured towards the car. Rose hopped in the drivers side,  Anton and Jack make their way to the back seats and I sit in the passenger seat. Rose started playing some music so that the car wasn't so quite but I didn't mind the quite. I just stared out of the window watching the scenery as it goes by.   As we were walking towards the mall, Rose was walking on my left while Anton and Jack are on my right. This wasn’t so unusual. They still had orders to protect me but we couldn't just outright draw attention to ourselves. So we made it look like  we were just a group of friends looking to kill some time at the mall. So we all were dressed in casual clothes. Even though I couldn't see them I knew all four of them were carrying at least one gun and a couple of knives. Just because they needed to blend in with the majority of the public doesn’t mean that they can slacken on their protective duties. It did also make me feel safer. Knowing what mom and Dad did for work it was alwasy better to be safe then sorry. My parents came into their money and their power when I was 5 years old. When my grandfather died they both became the heads of the family. Well for my family also means that you are now the head of the mafia and all of its dealings. The regoin that my parents asre in control over is actually the biggest on this side of the world. We deal with the whole western half of America. Our regoin ends at the Mississippi River. Everything east of that is Dealt with by another Head of Family.  They knew that it was coming and I found out later when I was older.      My grandpa told them well before they actually came into power. So since then I have been protected by whatever means necessary. Now if you ask me I don't know why I need to be protected so much. I mean I get the fact that some rivals might want to kidnap me and ransom me but I was trained to fight at a young age too. So I understood having the guards at a younger age when I was more helpless and more vulnerable. Granted when I was that young there was no hiding my guards from the rest of the world. People don't hire guards that are barely able to walk and talk.  At that time it was a little more noticable.      Mom and dad always had the same rules though. I couldn't go anywhere without my guards and I couldn't impede their ability to protect me in any way.   And that is where I messed up big time.
