Chapter 1 The Man Behind The Desk
Lena Carter stared at the enormous glass building in front of her and tightened her grip around the folder in her hands.
Vale International.
For the past three months, she had dreamed about getting a job here.
Today, the dream had finally become reality.
She took a deep breath before walking through the revolving doors.
“First day,” she whispered to herself. “You can do this.”
The receptionist checked her name and directed her toward the executive elevators.
Lena thanked her and stepped inside.
As the doors closed, she looked at her reflection.
Simple black dress.
Neat hair.
Nervous smile.
She looked nothing like the confident woman she had promised herself she would become.
But today wasn't about confidence.
It was about starting over.
Eight years ago, Lena had learned that life could change in a single night.
She had been eighteen then, sitting alone on a quiet rooftop after the worst day of her life.
That was where she met him.
A young stranger with sad eyes and a gentle voice.
He had never told her his real name.
They had talked for hours.
About dreams.
About loneliness.
About the kind of future they wanted.
Before they separated, he had looked at her and said something she had never forgotten.
“Maybe we'll meet again when we're finally ready.”
Then he disappeared.
Lena had spent years wondering where he was.
She never imagined she would meet him again.
Especially not like this.
The elevator doors opened.
“Ms. Carter?”
A woman stood waiting.
“Mr. Vale is ready for you.”
Lena's stomach tightened.
Mr. Vale.
She followed the woman through a long corridor until they reached a pair of enormous wooden doors.
The woman knocked.
“Come in.”
The voice from inside was deep.
Calm.
Familiar.
Lena froze.
Something about that voice pulled at a memory she couldn't explain.
The door opened.
She stepped inside.
A man stood beside the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back toward her.
He wore a perfectly tailored dark suit.
His posture was confident.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
“Ms. Carter.”
He turned.
Lena forgot how to breathe.
Those eyes.
She knew those eyes.
Eight years disappeared in an instant.
The rooftop.
The city lights.
The stranger who had listened to her when nobody else did.
The man she had never stopped wondering about.
Her folder slipped slightly from her fingers.
“Adrian?”
His expression changed.
For the first time since she entered the room, the billionaire looked completely caught off guard.
“Lena.”
She stared at him.
“You're…”
“Adrian Vale,” he finished quietly.
Silence filled the office.
Lena took a step backward.
The boy from her memories was gone.
In his place stood a powerful billionaire whose name appeared on newspapers and business magazines.
But beneath the expensive suit and cold expression, she could still recognize him.
The same eyes.
The same voice.
The same man who had once made her feel safe when the entire world seemed against her.
“You knew who I was,” Lena said.
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he walked toward her.
One step.
Then another.
Until only a few feet separated them.
“I knew the moment I saw your application.”
Lena's heart pounded.
“Then why did you hire me?”
His gaze remained fixed on hers.
“Because I wanted to know whether you remembered me.”
Lena swallowed.
“And?”
A faint, almost invisible smile touched his lips.
“You did.”
He turned toward his desk and picked up a document.
“Sit down, Lena.”
She hesitated.
Something told her she should walk away.
Something else told her that the answers she had searched for during the last eight years were sitting inside this office.
She slowly took the chair opposite him.
Adrian placed the document between them.
“This is a contract.”
Lena looked down.
“A contract for what?”
His eyes met hers again.
“For staying close to me.”
Her heart skipped.
“Why?”
Adrian leaned back in his chair.
“Because someone is trying to destroy my family.”
Lena frowned.
“What does that have to do with me?”
Adrian's expression became serious.
“Everything.”
He paused.
“Because the night we met eight years ago wasn't an accident.”
Lena stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Adrian's voice dropped.
“Someone sent you to me.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
Lena shook her head.
“I don't understand.”
“You will.”
Adrian pushed the contract toward her.
“But before you decide whether to sign it, there's something you need to know.”
Lena looked at him.
“What?”
Adrian's eyes held hers.
“The person who separated us eight years ago has found us again.”
Lena's fingers tightened around the edge of the paper.
And for the first time, she realized that her reunion with Adrian wasn't a coincidence.
It was the beginning of a secret that could change both their lives forever.
