The Gates of Hell
The wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate loomed over us like the jaws of a beast, hissing open as our battered sedan crawled through. I pressed my forehead against the cool glass of the window, watching the manicured lawns stretch out into endless green nightmares. This wasn't a home. It was a gilded cage, and my mother had willingly handed over the key.
"Isn't it magnificent, Maya?" my mother breathed from the driver's seat, her eyes shining with a sickening mixture of awe and nervous ambition. She adjusted her rearview mirror for the tenth time, smoothing down a stray lock of blonde hair. "Arthur has been so generous. A fresh start. For both of us."
"For you," I muttered under my breath, careful to keep my voice low enough that she wouldn't launch into her usual lecture about gratitude.
Arthur Sterling was a billionaire real estate mogul, a prominent figure in the city's elite social circles, and as I would soon discover, a powerful pack Alpha. My mother had met him at a charity gala six months ago, and within weeks, our cramped two-bedroom apartment had been traded for this suffocating fortress. My mother thought she had hit the jackpot. I knew better. In worlds like this, outsiders didn't get fairy tales; they got eaten alive.
The car glided to a halt in front of a grand double-door entrance flanked by towering stone pillars. Before my mother could even switch off the ignition, the passenger door was pulled open by a uniformed butler who looked at my faded sneakers with polite disdain.
"Welcome to the Sterling household, Mrs. Vance—soon to be Sterling," the butler said smoothly, offering a gloved hand to my mother.
I grabbed my duffel bag from the back seat and stepped out, the damp autumn air clinging to my skin. My boots crunched on the gravel as I looked up at the towering mansion. Massive glass windows gleamed under the gray afternoon sky, reflecting my own tired, defiant expression. I had one rule for this new life: keep my head down, survive senior year at our new elite academy, and stay completely off the radar. No drama. No attention. Just graduate and get out.
"Arthur is in the study, but he wanted us to settle in first," my mother said, practically skipping up the marble steps. "Your room is on the second floor, right next to—"
She stopped dead in her tracks.
The heavy front doors swung open on their own, and the temperature in the air seemed to drop ten degrees.
Standing in the doorway was a young man who commanded the space around him with terrifying ease. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and carried an aura of absolute, uncontested dominance. Dark, messy hair fell over a pair of piercing, predatory eyes that swept over my mother and me like we were trespassers on his personal hunting ground. A black leather jacket hung loosely over a charcoal t-shirt, accentuating a lean, muscular build that screamed danger.
Jaxson Sterling.
Even from the gossip articles my mother had nervously scrolled past on her phone, I recognized him instantly. The school’s notorious playboy. The star athlete, the campus king, and—as a cold knot began to twist in my stomach—my new stepbrother.
My mother’s face lit up into a bright, eager smile. "Jaxson, darling! You're home early from practice. Let me introduce you—"
"Save it," Jaxson cut her off. His voice was a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated straight through the floorboards. He didn't even look at my mother. His gaze locked onto me, laser-focused and entirely unblinking.
I swallowed hard, forcing my feet to stay planted. Every instinct I possessed screamed at me to back away, to run back to the car, to hide. There was something feral in the way he looked at me, a predatory hunger that didn't belong in a polite suburban household.
"Maya," my mother scolded, her voice tight with embarrassment. "Say hello to your stepbrother."
"Hi," I managed, my voice sounding entirely too small in the cavernous foyer.
Jaxson didn't reply. He slowly descended the marble steps, closing the distance between us with the silent, fluid grace of a wolf closing in on its prey. The scent of pine, rain, and raw ozone washed over me, heavy and intoxicating. My pulse hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
When he reached the bottom of the stairs, he stopped mere inches from where I stood. He was so close I could see the subtle flecks of gold swirling in his dark, stormy irises.
"My room," he murmured, his eyes scanning my face, my shoulders, the cheap canvas duffel bag clutched tightly in my grip. "It's right next to yours."
"Wonderful," I snapped, letting a flash of defensive irritation break through my fear. "Try not to make too much noise."
A dangerous, slow smirk curved the corner of his lips. Instead of stepping back, he leaned in closer, invading every inch of my personal space. The air left my lungs.
Without warning, his nostrils flared. His entire body went completely rigid. The lazy, arrogant playboy facade vanished in a single microsecond, replaced by something wild and uncontrollable. His eyes flashed with a brilliant, unmistakable amber light that made my breath hitch.
Before I could move, before I could even draw another breath, Jaxson’s hand shot out. He grabbed me by the waist with ironclad force and hauled me backward, slamming me against the solid wood of the front door. The impact knocked the wind from my chest, but the shock of his touch was far more paralyzing.
My mother gasped, taking a half-step forward. "Jaxson! What on earth are you—"
"Leave," Jaxson commanded, his voice dropping into a terrifying, guttural Alpha tone that left no room for argument. My mother froze, her eyes widening in sheer bewilderment as she backed away toward the interior hallway without another word.
We were alone.
I tried to push against his chest, but he was immovable—a wall of solid muscle and radiating heat. His face dipped toward my neck, his nose brushing the sensitive skin just beneath my ear as he inhaled deeply, trembling slightly as if he had just tasted something he had been starving for his entire life.
"You," he whispered against my skin, his voice rough, ragged, and trembling with a sudden, overwhelming intensity.
"Let me go," I hissed, my hands balled into fists against his shirt. "You're insane—"
Jaxson pulled back just enough to look into my eyes, his chest rising and falling heavily. The golden fire in his gaze burned hotter than ever, consuming every defense I had built. His fingers tightened around my waist, branding me through my jacket.
He stared down at me, a mixture of disbelief and fierce, possessive hunger written across every sharp angle of his face, before leaning down to press his lips against the shell of my ear.
With a low, vibrating growl that echoed off the high ceiling of the foyer and shattered my entire world into a million pieces, he whispered the one word I had prayed I would never hear:
"Mate."
