Chapter 6

MAXIMUS: "What are you doing here?" I asked Jordan. "You told me to stop by later. As your Beta, I should know about your travels," he smugly replied, with that sheepish grin still on his lips. "So, new interest?" "First off, that is none of your business. Also, knock next time," I glared at him. "Now sit." "I'm hurt," he faked a pained expression with his hand on his chest. "I'm your best friend, your right-hand man, and you say it is none of my business? Didn't know you'd cast me aside for love." "Jordan, get out," I pointed to the door. "Calm down, Alpha Maximus. I am here for matters of the pack, not matters of the heart." He raised his hands in surrender. "We'll talk about that later," I sighed, with my hand to my temple. "I get it, you must need more time with your new woman." "Oh, man. She's not my woman," I frowned. "Unless you want to discuss you and her twin sister, keep your mouth shut." "Excuse me?" "Drop the act, Jordan," I told him. "I caught you staring at her this morning before I entered my chamber." Jordan got up and strode to my sofa, sitting in the same spot where Zara was. I made a mistake; I should've never touched her because even when I don't want to think about her, something will make me. "I noticed they looked identical somehow," Jordan looked surprised. "It's okay to stare at a pretty woman, isn't it? When you see something you like, wouldn't you look at it?" "You're admitting to wanting her twin?" I asked. "If I could have Xena right now, I would. It's only been two days, and she's driven me crazy, but does that mean I want to date or wife her up? No, absolutely not. At least, I'm bold enough to speak the truth, unlike you." "You know nothing, Jordan. That lowly omega is my mate. I don't want her," I spoke to convince him and myself. "Oh Oh!" He paused. "The moon goddess did you dirty. If you don't want her, the mate bond is breakable." "I rejected her, but she hasn't rejected me." "Then make her. It's not that hard." "She got a job next to me," I scowled. "Then it's easier. I'll go out now, then call her in to reject you. And there's your freedom," he shrugged. "She's a really beautiful woman. It's such a shame that she was born an Omega; the elders of the pack would instantly resent her for trying to be Luna over them." Him complimenting her sparked something in me, a feeling I couldn't comprehend. "Yeah, focus on her twin." "Will do," he stood up, checking his watch. "My free time is over; there are some boys I have to whack in the head. It's been a week, but they don't understand a thing about combat," Jordan said, annoyed. "That's why they have you; don't give up on them." "Whatever," he walked out without looking back. I tried to focus on work, and wait till the next time Zara would come for my checkup. I didn't want to call for her; I wanted her to come on her own terms. However, her face wouldn't stop popping up in my head. Pathetic; an omega managed to take me away from my obligations as Alpha. I couldn't wait for her to reject our mate bond. At exactly 1p.m., the door sprang open and Dr. Barkley walked in. “Dr. Barkley, you are here. Where is the medic who came earlier?” I asked immediately he entered. For a second, I thought his expression flickered. “She… excused herself, Alpha. She wasn’t feeling well. I’ll be checking your vitals personally.” “I know she is still around. Go and tell her to come back here and check it instead,” I said immediately. “Alpha—” “That's an order,” I snapped. Dr. Barkley inclined his head, and he left. Minutes later, the door sprang open, and the mild scent of vanilla filled the air again. “Alpha Maximus,” she bowed quickly, clutching a portable kit to her chest. The hair I had once tugged free was tied back tightly now, neat and controlled. Even in that uniform, she was radiant. Too radiant. She moved to set her kit on the desk and reached for the stethoscope, but I stopped her. “Wait.” She froze, back straightening. “Yes, Alpha?” “Come.” I gestured to the sofas. “I’d rather stand, Alpha Maximus.” “I don’t remember giving you two options, Zara.” Reluctantly, she obeyed, settling on the edge of the sofa. I sat across from her, folding one leg over the other, masking the storm beneath my composure. “I’ll get straight to the point.” My voice came out low and sharp. “Reject me.” Her head snapped up, eyes wide. “You already rejected me.” "Yes," I gritted. "I know you're an Omega, but even a child born into this world today would know it takes both sides to sever a mate bond.” “I don’t want you,” she fumed, “Is that enough for your Alpha pride?” "You will not speak to me in that tone, Zara." "You can't just sleep with me and then cut me off like that," her eyes began to water. "Do you not care at all?" "About you? No," I replied honestly. She remained silent. Her tears piled, but I saw her taking everything in her to not let them fall. I groaned in exasperation. "Okay, I see that you are in pain, so I'll give you a week to recover from whatever happened between us so you can reject me." "A week?" She croaked. “I'm doing you a favor here.” "A week is your favor?" "How much time do you need?" I inquired. "A lifetime." "Zara Dos Santos!" I raised my voice, making her flinch. "I know a girl like you wants affection and loves fairy tales, but I can't give you that." I added, "Ever. So break the bond and let's set ourselves free." She turned away. "I'll give you thirty days." "Then what?" "Then whatever comes after, you'll have to take it." "Are you threatening me?" "It's not a threat; it's a warning. Be careful with me, Zara.” She opens her mouth to speak but closes it. She knows I have the upper hand, and she knows there's really nothing she can do about it. "Give me sixty days," she finally said. It was a stretch, but I was confident that I could convince her to leave me before then. "Fine," I agreed. "You have sixty days, Zara. I will not be any more generous." "Like you've never been more generous," I heard her mumble. "I heard that." She stood up. "Thank you, Alpha Maximus, for your kind unusual generosity." You could taste her sarcasm from a mile away. I chuckled silently. "You're welcome." “Can I check your vitals now.” “Proceed.” Zara set down her kit and worked in silence. After she finished the checking and recording, she closed the file. “I will take my leave now, Alpha,” she bowed and turned to leave. Watching her leave, I hoped that I wouldn't regret giving her a deadline. She might be on my neck for sixty days. Not sure if that'd do me any good.
