CHAPTER ONE
The hallway buzzed with noise, people brushing past each other, laughter bouncing off the walls. Kylie and I threaded through the crowd, our conversation getting louder as we neared the dining hall. And then, out of nowhere, I collided with what felt like a wall… but it wasn’t brick or stone. It was muscle. Solid, unyielding muscle. I gasped as my shoulder slammed into the stranger’s chest, a surge of electricity shooting through me, leaving my skin tingling. The force made me stumble backward, clutching my shoulder as I struggled to regain balance. “Watch where you’re going” I started, but my voice caught in my throat. Time stopped. The chatter, the laughter, the clinking of dishes… all of it vanished. I was frozen, staring into piercing blue eyes that seemed to see straight through me. Daniel Smith. The future Alpha of the Moonlight Pack. My brother’s friend. And, apparently, the universe’s cruel idea of a mate. “Leah,” he said, his voice low and strained. For a moment, I thought he might say something else, but instead, he grabbed my wrist. “Wait, what are you?” I began, but he was already pulling me through the hallway, his grip firm, his pace quick. “Daniel!” I hissed, struggling to keep up. “What’s going on? Let me go!” But he didn’t answer. The crowd parted around us, eyes following our every move. He didn’t stop until we were outside, the crisp air hitting my face as we crossed the lawn toward the garden. “Okay, seriously, what’s your problem?” I demanded, yanking my arm, but his grip didn’t loosen. When we reached the garden, he finally stopped, turning to face me. His jaw was clenched so tight it looked painful, his eyes clouded with something I couldn’t place. “You… can’t be my mate,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. My heart sank. “What?” I breathed, sure I’d misheard him. Daniel took a deep breath, his gaze darting away from mine. “I reject you, Leah.” The words hit me like a punch to the gut. I stumbled back, shaking my head. “You… you can’t mean that.” “I do,” he said, his tone colder now. “I, Daniel Smith, reject you as my mate.” It felt like the world was spinning. My chest tightened, my breath coming in shallow gasps. “Why?” I choked out. “Why are you doing this?” His eyes hardened. “Because we can’t be mates. No one can know about this. Not your brother. Not anyone.” His rejection felt like a knife twisting in my chest. I stared at him, searching for some flicker of warmth, some sign that he didn’t mean it. But all I saw was his resolve. “You’re a coward,” I spat, my voice shaking with anger. “You’re afraid of what the pack will think. Afraid of your precious reputation.” His scowl deepened, but I wasn’t done. “You’ll regret this, Daniel,” I said, my voice a whisper now, thick with unshed tears. “You’ll regret everything.” I turned and walked away, refusing to let him see me break. The sting of rejection still burned as I stormed back toward the pack house. But just as I stepped inside, a familiar, mocking voice sliced through the air. “Well, well, look who it is. The little weakling.” I didn’t turn. I didn’t need to. That voice belonged to Diana, my personal tormentor and the pack warrior’s daughter. She loved two things: making my life miserable and pretending she was Daniel’s mate. When a sharp slap landed on my arm, I finally spun around. “What do you want, Diana?” I snapped. She smirked, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Oh, don’t be like that, Leah. I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday.” “Right,” I said dryly. “Because you’re so thoughtful.” Her grin widened. “It’s your birthday, isn’t it? Shouldn’t we celebrate? Oh wait… did something happen? Your eyes are all red. Been crying?” I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. Before I could respond, her attention shifted, and her face lit up. “Daniel!” she called, her tone sickly sweet. She took off toward him, leaving me standing there, trembling with frustration. Without a second glance, I turned and walked away. In my room, the tears finally came. Daniel’s words played over and over in my head. “We can’t be mates. No one must know.” I thought about all the times he’d been there for me, defending me against bullies like Diana. I thought he was different. That he cared. “Leah?” Kylie’s voice came from the doorway. She stepped inside, her eyes wide as she took in the scene. “What’s going on?” I hesitated, swallowing hard before answering. “I… I got rejected by my mate.” Her eyes widened. “Wait. Daniel?Daniel is your mate?” I nodded, my throat too tight to speak. “What are you going to do?” I took a deep breath. “I need to clear my head, I want to be left alone. I need space to think.” Kylie nodded, her concern clear in her expression. “Let me know if you need anything.” Daniel’s POV I stepped into the pack house, hoping to have a quick conversation with Leah, but the tension that rippled through the air like an electric charge left me worried. My chest tightened as I exchanged a glance with Joel Leah's elder brother, his expression mirroring the unease that coursed through me. "She was here," I said, my voice steady but low. The faint trace of her scent lingered, unmistakable. "She should still be inside." Joel nodded sharply and bounded up the stairs two at a time. "I’ll check Leah’s room." Seconds later, his panicked voice rang out, cutting through the silence like a knife. "Daniel!" I sprinted up the stairs, his heart pounding loud enough to feel in the walls. "Is she dead?" I demanded, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios. But Joel wasn’t looking at me. He stood frozen in Leah’s room, a crumpled piece of paper clutched in his trembling hands. His face was pale, his eyes red-rimmed with unshed tears. "She’s gone," he whispered, his voice cracking. My eyes locked on the note in his hand. Without thinking, I grabbed it, flattening the paper enough to read the hastily scrawled words. "Dear Joel, I know you never care, but I’m leaving the pack for a while. Say what you want—I don’t care anymore. I’ve had enough of being bullied, and I owe nobody an e xplanation for leaving." "What?" The word tore from my throat, raw and furious, as I crushed the note in my fist. Joel’s voice broke again as he repeated, "She’s gone."
