Prologue - Creatures of the Night
Long, long ago, there was only the Void - a blackness full of nothing that went on forever. Out of the Void came Chaos, a swirling mass of color and light. Chaos was the beginning of all things but had no real shape or consciousness or direction. From Chaos came the creators of our world - Gaia, the Goddess of Earth and living beings, and Chronos, the God of time. With them at the helm, Chaos could begin to take shape. The planets were born, and Earth was shaped into being. Gaia and Chronos gave birth to several children that would look over the Earth and fill it with beings. First, Hemera, the Goddess of day, and Helios, the God of the sun. Together, they would look over children of the day – humans and diurnal animals. It was their daughter, Asteria, the goddess of the stars, that went on to create the fae and the nymphs. Then there were Pontus and Thalassa, the God and Goddess of the sea. They bore no children, but went on to watch over the marine life and create mermaids, selkie and sirens. Next, came Nyx and Erebus, the Goddess and God of darkness and night. Together, they would look after the children of the night. It was their children that created the different creatures, each preferring a different type of creature. Thanatos and Hypnos were the firstborn twins of the pair. Thanatos oversaw death, and his brother, sleep. The devious brothers saw humans as their personal playthings and decided they would gift humans with immortality. These gifted humans had to feed on other humans to survive, they had to become the walking personification of death and endless sleep - and thus vampires were born in the image of the brothers.  Selene, the moon goddess and the youngest child of Nyx and Erebus. From her came beautiful, enormous wolf-like creatures, with Artemis as her first creation. The Lycans were strong, fearsome creatures that joined the gods and goddesses in battle, could hunt even the fastest of vampires, and were wonderful companions to the deities. They became so beloved by Nyx and Erebus that the twin brothers became jealous of their sister’s creation. Lycans were revered, whereas vampires were abhorred. The twins turned their focus on trying to destroy the Lycans. In an attempt to save her beloved creation, she merged them into the souls of humans to hide them from her brothers. This merge created the Lycanthropes – two halves of a soul residing in a single body.   Just before her creation of these beings, she met and fell in love with Asteria. Their love could be felt across the universe, and with it starlight exploded and created the millions of stars we can see in our night sky. Selene and Asteria noticed that Lycans had withered in their human bodies, having become weakened being tethered to a more mortal being. Thus, they devised a plan to forge bonds between two like souls. Each mated pair was whole when together, filling in blank spaces and empty puzzle pieces of the other. Their soul mate bond increased their strength – a mated pair was stronger together than apart. Selene and Asteria went on to create another being, the beautiful Hecate – goddess of magic and spells. Hecate became very taken by humans, and lived amongst them for some time. She was seen as a priestess to many, and taught her followers how to use nature to draw upon magic. Even now, witches tell the stories of how their goddess imbued just a bit of her own magic into them. For many hundreds of years, the deities lived very closely with their creations. They helped them and they perfected them. After so long, the deities decided it to be best to leave Earth and watch from afar, hoping that their designs would continue to thrive and prosper. Now, after so many millennia have passed, many of the deities are just myth to humans, and the creatures have faded into the darkness and the sea. No longer do they roam together, well known to all. Instead, the creatures too faded into mythology in the minds of the humans. But they remain in the shadows, now truly children of the night.
