Donovan came downstairs to the hall to escort me and stopped in front of Penelope, who was waiting there patiently for us. I turned around and looked at him with glittery eyes, still showing reluctance to leave.
The usually temperamental man, for some reason, was still calm against my tantrums. He asked, “What is it?”
I shook my head. Even though I was looking up at his face, I could feel Penelope’s face dropping, seeing the way Donovan was talking to me. He was an infamous iceberg who was presumed not to have emotions. Even now, his tone was stern, but there was a rare gentleness to it, something Penelope had never seen before.
He said, “Go back home and rest. I will come to meet you in the evening.”
Hearing his words, Penelope beamed slightly, "Uncle, will you be coming to meet me?" It was evident that it was one of her desperate attempts to grab the man’s attention. It was a pity she had been waiting at his house for the entire morning and still hadn’t managed to strike up a single conversation.
Donovan, however, coldly dismissed her question, "No, I am talking to your sister."
The smile on her face dropped immediately, but she managed to give an awkward nod, "Oh, ok!" She tried her best to look unaffected, but the frustration in her tone was inevitable.
The girl was in her best behaviour until we left the villa; once we were out, she started nagging me with questions.
I pulled Donovan’s shirt closer and said, “The… The Alpha said he is in love with me.”
“He said what?” Penelope slammed the brakes of the car in the middle of the road.
I pretended to be scared and said, “I am scared, sis. I don’t know what to do. He says that he is going to make me his mate…”
My words seemed to have ignited something as the usually calm Penelope erupted in anger. She cut me off and started berating, “Are you out of your f*****g mind? How can you be his mate? He is our uncle and the Alpha of our pack, goddammit. You are not a f*****g kid anymore. Stop messing with people you should not be messing with.”
I trembled a little, making the latter stop. Realising that she had spoken more than she should have, Penelope lowered her tone and put her hand on my shoulder lovingly. "I am sorry about that. I am just worried about you. You know how much I care for you, right?” She said gently, “Celeste, listen to me. The Alpha is not the right guy for you. You both belong to two different worlds.”
“Why would you say that?” I asked her innocently, “I am also a Gamma wolf, and I qualify to be a Luna.”
She said, “No, I am not saying that. You absolutely qualify to be a Luna, but do you seriously think the Alpha is serious about you? Oh, don’t be so naive, Celeste.”
I pursed my lips, not because I didn’t have anything to say but because I wanted to know what more she had to say. Just as I had expected, she spoke up, “The Alpha is just toying with you; he doesn’t love you. You should be with someone who loves you, like Chris. Aren't you guys so much in love? Trust me, Chris Yorker is the one for you. Stay away from the Alpha, ok? He is just excited about you because you are a virgin. Once the excitement withers off, he won’t want you anymore.”
I forced a bitter smile, I could not believe she would stoop down to the level of spewing such disgusting things. At this point, I wasn't sure if she was trying to convince me to give up or was deceiving herself with such excuses.
I stayed mum for a while as if I was conflicting with myself and said, “I don’t like Chris anymore, he is wilted and immature. I think I suit better with mature men, like the Alpha."
The latter’s face immediately twisted in disbelief when she heard my words.
In my previous life, I was head over heels for Chris. He was the son of the Beta of Shadowclaw pack and the next in line as the successor. He was extremely charismatic and handsome, and on top of that took really good care of me in school.
He promised to marry me after graduation and take me to his pack, away from the claws of the Veraline family once and for all. He was my only silver of hope until he found out about Donovan and broke up with me without even listening to my side of the story.
Penelope took pity on me and convinced Chris to meet me at a hotel room, giving me a chance to explain. The man never showed up but Donovan, who somehow found out about this plan, did.
He was so upset by all this that he nearly drowned me in the hotel pool, not even caring about the hundreds of guests who were watching us. The way everyone just stood there while I was at the verge of death was one of those moments where it truly hit me just how powerful that man was and how no one would really care if I were to die in his arms.
Donovan did not stop there and forced me to drop out of college and put me on a house arrest, I wasn’t even allowed to step into the garden without supervision. I, however, did not give up and started rebelling by refusing to eat until I had to be rushed to the ER.
The Alpha dropped everything and stormed into my ward with a grim look on his face. After the doctors explained to him about my condition, he asked me, “What will it take for you to stop this madness?”
“Chris…” I managed to utter.
The man’s face did not change, he just glared at me for a while before ordering for Chris to be summoned. Thirty minutes later, I was taken to an emptied cafeteria where Donovan was already seated. Just as I sat down, Chris entered through the doors with a stern face.
