Chapter 1: The Awakening of the System
Morning sunlight streamed through the gap in the curtains, spilling into the room as Emily groggily opened her eyes. Vancouver mornings always carried a slight chill, and she instinctively pulled the blanket tighter around her. She was about to indulge in a few more minutes of precious sleep when a calm, mechanical voice suddenly rang in her mind.
"System activated. Host successfully bound."
Emily shot up in bed, her drowsiness replaced by a sharp jolt of alarm. She scanned the room nervously. Everything was still. The only sound was the soft rustling of the wind against the curtains.
"Who’s there?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, not wanting to wake her roommate, Kara, in the adjacent room.
"I am your Growth Assistance System. Complete tasks to earn corresponding rewards."
"Growth System?" Emily frowned, half-convinced she was still dreaming. To test her theory, she pinched her arm. The sharp sting confirmed otherwise.
"The Growth System is designed to help the host enhance personal attributes, including but not limited to appearance, intelligence, and emotional intelligence."
"Wait, you’re saying I can complete tasks to become… better?" Emily asked skeptically.
"Correct."
The voice was devoid of emotion, yet it carried an air of authority that demanded attention.
"So, what’s the first task?"
"Task one: Gain the favor of your classmate, Lucas. Reward: +5 beauty points, +2 charisma points."
"Lucas?" Emily immediately pictured him in her mind. He was a second-year finance student, effortlessly charming and always surrounded by friends. Whether it was during class discussions or at social events, Lucas carried himself with an ease that made him a favorite among students, particularly the girls.
Emily couldn’t help but mutter, "This sounds impossible."
The system ignored her complaint and simply issued its directive: "Task timer begins now."
With a sigh of resignation, Emily looked up at the ceiling. "Well, looks like today’s going to be anything but normal."
Emily Harper was as ordinary as they came. Born and raised in Toronto, she grew up in a middle-class family. Her parents, both teachers, had always emphasized the importance of academics, encouraging her to focus on her studies for a brighter future. While she had done well academically, her shy and reserved nature often left her feeling invisible in social settings.
Choosing UBC’s finance program was a bold move for Emily. She wanted to step out of her comfort zone, experience life in a new city, and gain independence. The breathtaking scenery of Vancouver and UBC’s stellar reputation sealed her decision. However, once she arrived, she quickly realized how competitive and accomplished her peers were, which made her doubt whether she truly belonged.
"I just want to get through my courses quietly," she had once told her roommate, Kara. "Get a stable job afterward and keep life simple."
Kara was her polar opposite—outgoing, vibrant, and brimming with curiosity about everything. She was Emily’s first friend on campus, and their contrasting personalities somehow balanced each other perfectly.
Determined not to let Kara suspect anything unusual, Emily pushed her thoughts aside, got ready quickly, and stepped into the common area. Kara was already there, pouring herself a steaming cup of coffee.
"Morning, Emily! You’re up early. What’s the occasion?" Kara asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Just thought I’d hit the library early," Emily replied with a small smile.
"Good idea. James and I are heading out later to watch a skateboarding competition. Wanna join us?"
Emily shook her head. "Maybe next time. I’ve got a bit of work to catch up on."
Stepping outside, the crisp morning air greeted her. UBC’s campus looked particularly picturesque under the golden sunlight, the green lawns dotted with students jogging, chatting, or simply enjoying the serene start to the day.
But Emily wasn’t in the mood to admire the scenery. One name echoed in her mind: Lucas.
Finance 101 was Emily’s first class of the day and her least favorite subject. She arrived ten minutes early and chose a seat near the back. Scanning the room, her eyes quickly landed on Lucas, seated near the front, engrossed in his notes. The sunlight streaming through the window illuminated his brown hair, giving him an almost ethereal glow.
Emily took a deep breath, debating whether to approach him. Before she could decide, the professor entered, interrupting her thoughts.
"Good morning, class. Today we’ll be working on group case studies. Form groups of four, discuss the assigned scenarios, and submit a brief report at the end."
Emily hesitated. Around her, students were already forming groups. She glanced at Lucas, who was chatting with a few classmates. Then, as if sensing her gaze, he turned and looked directly at her.
"Emily," he called out, a friendly smile on his face. "Wanna join our group?"
"Oh, sure!" she blurted out, her heart skipping a beat.
She joined Lucas’s group, which also included James, a quick-witted joker, and Chloe, a reserved but thoughtful classmate. As they began their discussion, Lucas naturally assumed the role of leader.
"Our case is about optimizing operations for a company. Let’s approach it from different angles," he suggested, his tone calm yet authoritative.
Emily hesitated but eventually offered, "What if we looked at it from a supply chain perspective? It might improve efficiency."
Lucas nodded appreciatively. "That’s a great idea. Can you elaborate on that?"
Encouraged by his response, Emily relaxed and explained her thoughts in detail. The group’s discussion flowed smoothly under his guidance, punctuated by occasional laughter.
After class, Lucas approached Emily as she packed her things.
"Your insights today were impressive," he said. "I’d never thought of analyzing supply chains that way."
"Thanks," Emily replied, a shy smile playing on her lips.
"Next time we have a project like this, let’s team up again," Lucas said with a wink before heading out.
As he walked away, the system’s familiar chime echoed in Emily’s mind: "Task progress: 20%."
A small smile crept onto her face, but she quickly reminded herself that this was just the beginning. To truly gain Lucas’s favor, she’d need more opportunities to show her worth.
