Ch 2: Noah

1190 Words
f**k Noah, how could you forget our annual appointment from hell.  That wonderfully cheerful creature would be my wolf Xavier. I didn't forget Xavier, it just slipped my mind. Also, we are one and the same, if I did forget, how come you didn't remind me? Not wanting to be wrong, like the Alpha wolf he is, he instead decides to retreat in my mind, causing me to smirk but that only lasted for so long. I wouldn’t have even given it the time of day if my assistant hadn’t brought it up in front of my mom.  Looks like someone is losing their job today. Leave it to Xavier to be hot-headed. I guess it is in his blood but still we had to maintain our cool when necessary for the safety of the pack. No, calm down Xavier. He doesn't know and remember, you like to keep it that way. The less people know the better. It’s why you moved out here all those years ago.  Although I was the Alpha of the Eclipse Moon Pack, I didn't spend majority of my time in the pack house. Because business was booming, I had to split my time between the pack and my business. Luckily, I have my trusted team comprising of the usual high ranked wolves, my Beta Jack and my Gamma Nicholas. They were my family right after well, my blood related family. Yeah, whatever. Before I could get sucked in further, a hand lands on my arm and shakes me out of the hole I was going to fall in. I look up to see the warm brown eyes that match my own. “Mom. don't look at me like that. I am fine,” I say trying to reassure her. Just as she’s about to protest, I raise my hand, effectively stopping her. “No, I’m serious, mom. Please don’t go there, not today.” My mom may be the Luna of the  Eclipse Moon Pack, but I was the Alpha. My mate should be the Luna but I didn't have one anymore and it was something no one dared to talk to me about. It wasn't pleasant at all. “Okay, but promise me you’ll go to the appointment.” She looks up at me with pleading eyes. Now, wolves don't generally get sick but we still have our annual check ups like everyone else, not that it was needed but better safe than sorry, especially after last time. Since bI have never been able to say no to my mother, especially when she looks at me like that, I concede. “Alright mom, I’ll go.” She eyes me suspiciously before carefully informing me, “So you previous doctor moved away. I know you couldn’t care less about your doctors so I went ahead and made an appointment with a new doctor. You’ll be seeing her from now on.” That sure gets my attention. Each pack generally has their own pack doctor or doctors and my pack does too but I went to a specific doctor not from our pack that was closer to me by convenience. Why would an alpha go to a different doctor when we had a pack doctor? Well, I was tired of the sympathetic looks and eyes filled with pity every time I went there so my mom and I decided that I should go to a different doctor. So my mom wasn’t just informed but she was the one who was behind this whole thing. Now it’s my turn to look at her uneasily. Shaking my head, I start, “Mom -” Noticing or maybe knowing my unease she continues as if I hadn’t spoken at all. “Listen to me carefully, it’s only one appointment in a year that you have to keep. It’s not like you get sick much anyway. PLEASE be nice, it took a while to find a doctor who didn’t start sweating at the mere mention of your name.” I chuckle, which only earns me a small slap on my bicep. She tries her best to give me her “stern eyes” and says, “Behave.” “Yes, mom I promise. Now will you please not treat me like a kid. I love you but I have a meeting to attend.” I quickly kiss her cheek and give her a brief hug, hoping she gets the hint. “You’ll always be my little kid, Alpha or not.” Sighing, she hugs me back and takes one last glance at me before leaving my office. As soon as I see her rounding the corner, I pick up the phone on my desk.  “Hello, sir what can I do for you?” My assistant, Josh Hudson, answers. “Office, now!”  It won’t hurt him to know that I am not happy with decisions being made about me behind my back, regardless of who it is with. I hear a knock on my door. “Come in and close the door behind you, Josh” He does as told and stands in front of me, fidgeting. Dammit Noah, breathe, you’re scaring the poor kid. I compose myself and try not to give out my Alpha aura. Instead, I look at him in complete silence. From his black dress shoes to his loose black slacks and matching coat, he looks like an assistant should look. Young but reliable as well as dressed well. I tried having female assistants but it was so hard to find a good one. Especially one who didn’t get the interview because “Daddy” knew people. “Please, sit.” I say after a few minutes. “Sir, can I just say it was not my intention to do th-” “That’s enough Josh, I know there is no winning with my mother. Just for future reference, don’t go off with my mom without keeping me in the loop. You are MY assistant, not hers. Anyway, I called you in because I want to know some more information about my new doctor. Doctor… ” waiting for him to fill in the blank. “Brown. Dr. Brown is her name.” “Hmm” I scratch the day old scruff on my face. “Okay, get me everything you can find on this Dr. Brown” “Yes, sir” As I hear the click of the door behind Josh, I put my head in my hands. Oh mom, when will you start letting this go. I know she means well and that she cares but this isn’t her problem. I don’t know how to tell her to back off a little without hurting her feelings. Instead, I focus on the meeting ahead of me while Josh gets what I asked. Dr. Brown huh?
