The sound of the beeping of a heart monitor was the first sound Mackenna recognized when she regained consciousness. The time she’d spent working in the hospital plus the time she’d spent in one when she’d had meningitis, she knew the sound well. She wanted to open her eyes, but her head throbbed, even blinking made her want to cry. As she lay there listening to the sounds of the equipment in the room, she felt her heart lurch as she heard Alessandro’s deep voice in the near vicinity.
