Chapter 17

That night the whole family gathered around a table eating the village's finest delicacy, sika stew meat. Justin ate the foreign food while he thought about some things. What was his purpose? To be truthful he had just been going with the flow these past days. From the centipede to the Wonpas village to the Taijins. He got nothing from accomplishing them. Which brought him to the question of his purpose. His wife was dead, his children were dead. He lived another life now…for what purpose though? “what’s outside of this village? I mean besides the vast green waste?” Justin asked. Chief doctor mutilo took a sip of water then he answered “well, there are many things outside of the village. We have the other five villages, Gebun, Sickly, Tisun, Vishant and Ashant. Together with our village, Wonpas, they form the six villages of the north”. “hmm” Justin stroked his chin “what of a city…any city around here?” If he was looking for a purpose…what better place than the city?. “A city…hmm; the only city near here is the Sky feather city. Do you perharps want to go there?” Chief doctor mutilo asked. For a young man like Justin, he was pretty sure a village couldn’t hold him down. He would want to spread his wings and soar in the sky. Justin nodded at the question “I’ll leave by sunrise tomorrow” Justin said. “why the rush!” kulin interjected, the man had barely just arrived and he was looking on setting out for the city the next day? “ yes you can at least stay a few more days here. There’s no harm in that…” Matilda said, supporting kulin. Justin chuckled wryly inside…there was absolutely much harm in waiting! “I pursue a higher purpose than this. My dreams calls to me and I have no intention in wasting one more second denying them” he said with an air of grace. “alright then, but if you're leaving in going with you!” kulin said adamantly. Justin and the rest were surprised by the words, what did he mean by That? “ Hush boy! You haven’t even finished your alchemy training, you’re in no state to go to the city!” chief doctor mutilo scoffed and rebutted kulin's words. Kulin frowned at chief doctor mutilo “Baba, for once listen to me. I have no passion or gift for alchemy. I’m not a doctor like you are, i...im a warrior.” Kulin tried to persuade the chief doctor. Why should he continue to do something he didn’t want to do? “you? A warrior? Tah! Your father entrusted you in my care before he died. The city is to dangerous and I don’t plan on letting you anywhere near there, you're too young for it.” chief doctor mutilo was getting a bit angry now. Kulin wasn’t having any of it “ im too young? Justin isn’t even older than I am but ur letting him go but not me?” What bullshit was the chief spitting! “he may not be older than you bit he's stronger and has more experience. There clearly is a difference between you two” the chief doctor responded. Kulin immediately defended himself “ But baba you’ve seen me with the bow. You’ve seen what I can do. What difference is th-” “You’re not going and that’s final!” The chief doctor slammed his hands on the table and with a furious expression he left the room. Matilda patted k ukin on the back trying to calm him down. The chief doctor, although harsh, really loved kulin and had always been over protective of him since the day his father died. She even wondered how he let kulin go into the forest with Justin. Justin watched kulin's sadness and decided to do something. If the boy was that passionate about being a warrior or whatever, then he was glad to help a friend. He put the meat he had been eating down and got up to chase after the chief doctor. He searched everywhere in the house but couldn’t find the chief doctor. He had prepared to go back when he saw a figure standing outside starring at the full moon. “Chief doctor….” Justin said as he stood by the chief doctor’s side. “you know, he's a really strong boy” he said staring at the moon together with the chief. “I know….” Chief doctor mutilo replied, his tone softer this time “well, why do you hold him back?” Justin asked, shifting his gaze over to the chief doctor’s face. “You don’t understand, he's too green for that. He’s just seventeen, if he died Hammond will never be happy with me….” Chief doctor mutilo said, his voice breaking. “Balmond?” Justin arched an eyebrow up “ His father” the chief doctor cleared his confusion. “where’s he?” Justin asked again “h…he's dead” the chief doctor responded “hmm, so let me get this straight. You’re keeping kulin here because of your friendship with his father…who's dead?” Justin figured it was time for some big brain advice “…correct” “and you think that’s a valid reason? Are you planning to keep him chained for the rest of his life? A spirited boy like kulin?” Justin question him “No no, he’s learning alchemy here. I’m not keeping him chained” the chief doctor was now fidgeting a bit “He's learning alchemy? Does he enjoy it? Do you think he enjoys it? Is he good at it? I’ve seen him work, he's good with his bow. Hell he even wiped out half the Taijins before I could do anything (a little hype goes a long way hehe)” Justin said. “You mean it?” the chief doctor said surprised. “for real, there was a time I abandoned hope and with only his bow and arrow he lifted my spirits again. He saved my life multiple times. If he isn’t a warrior then I don’t know what is. I suggest you think carefully of what you're doing. Taking someone's youth away can have a massive negative impact on them…take my word for it” Justin said the words and left the chief doctor to reflect on his decision.
