Mission in the Middle East
“There can be no mistakes. One wrong move, and we could all die,” Captain Andreas muttered in a voice as sharp as a knife, his eyes fixed intently ahead. His team of seven elite soldiers, holding their breath, stood in the shadows beneath the pitch-black night sky. Everyone knew there was no room for fear. Yet the tension was real, pulsing in the air like a time bomb ready to explode at any moment. Captain Andreas was leading a team on a high-risk rescue mission in the Middle Eastern desert. Their target was a scientist kidn*pped by rebel forces linked to Shadow Ares, a shadowy organization posing a global threat. With his proven combat skills and strategic expertise, Andreas guided his team through minefields and enemy checkpoints that were now heavily guarded. The night sky was pitch black. The sound of sand rustling in the wind was the only sound accompanying them at that moment. Andreas raised his hand, signaling for them to stop. His team froze in place, holding their breath as he crouched down to examine the ground in front of him. A small flash from the mine detector in his hand indicated that danger lurked nearby. “Anti-personnel mines,” Andreas whispered. “Let’s move slowly. Follow my lead!” he ordered. One by one, they moved forward with the utmost caution. Each step felt like a final breath before a deadly explosion. Cold sweat trickled down Andreas’s temples as he navigated the narrow path between the deadly traps. Ahead of them, the enemy guard post was faintly visible, its campfire illuminating the silhouettes of armed men. “Three guards at the twelve o’clock position,” said Dante, the long-range rifle specialist. He shouldered his rifle, ready to pull the trigger. “I’ll take them out, Captain!” “No!” Andreas replied firmly, rejecting the suggestion. “We mustn’t set off the alarm. Just take the path that loops around to the east. Stay silent, then move quickly,” he advised. “All right.” Dante followed his captain’s advice. They sprang into action, crawling along the stone wall, holding their breath as the enemy guards laughed loudly. A voice crackled over one of the enemies’ walkie-talkies. It made the team freeze instantly. “Movement on the perimeter. Keep an eye on them!” Andreas ordered. Shortly afterward, the first gunshot rang out. Their position was beginning to be discovered. Andreas immediately signaled with his hand. “Take cover! If anyone gets in your way, just shoot.” Andreas’s voice sounded calm, yet full of authority. Bullets rained down on them from all directions. Andreas ducked and leaped behind the rubble, gasping for breath. Drawing a throwing knife, he hurled it straight at the neck of one of the enemies closing in on him. “Hold your ground! We’re too close to retreat,” Andreas shouted to his team. However, a massive explosion shook the ground near them, sending a wave of heat and metal shrapnel flying in all directions. Andreas looked ahead. For a split second, he caught a glimpse of the scientist they were looking for, tied up inside an enemy tent that was starting to burn. “Top priority: rescue the target and get him out now!” Andreas ordered again. “Got it,” Dante replied. As Dante and the other team members secured the scientist’s position, Andreas began the assault. He charged ahead, a knife in his right hand and a gun in his left. The tent in front of him, on the verge of collapsing, was now filled with thick smoke. With a single, expert motion, he cut the ropes binding the scientist and dragged him out of the flames. “You’re safe now, Professor,” Andreas said, though his voice was filled with tension. “Hang in there a little longer!” Andreas and the professor began leaving the area, heading toward the extraction zone just a few hundred meters away up the rocky hill. Both held their breath with every step, time seeming to slow as they drew closer. However, the roar of engines cut sharply through the night. “Captain, we're in big trouble,” Dante muttered. “Everyone fall back. Now!” Andreas shouted, his voice rising above the sound of the gunfire. But one of his team members, Lucas, collapsed to the ground; a bullet had struck his leg, leaving him unable to move. Andreas turned to look at him. “Lucas, you’re badly wounded.” “It’s okay, Captain. Just leave me behind!” said Lucas, gasping for breath as he endured the pain in his right leg. “No. No one gets left behind,” replied Andreas, his face tense. He couldn’t bear the thought of leaving his team in that dangerous zone. “We go together; we’ll go home together too,” said Dante as he approached Lucas. Then, he carefully hoisted his comrade onto his back. Shortly afterward, the rescue helicopter hovering low above them finally arrived, waiting for the final signal. Andreas clutched the emergency detonator in his hand. The choice now rested at his fingertips: save his team or destroy the vehicle full of explosives that could end all their lives. Andreas pressed one of the detonator’s buttons. A massive explosion immediately shook the ground, thick dust nearly blanketing the entire battlefield, and all sounds faded into the roar of destruction. *** The next day at headquarters. The sound of Andreas’s footsteps echoed down the narrow corridor leading to a room. The gray concrete walls felt increasingly oppressive all around him, as if adding to the burden already weighing on his shoulders. The fluorescent lights on the corridor ceiling cast a dim glow, casting long shadows every time Andreas rounded a corner. Andreas arrived at a steel door labeled “CONFIDENTIAL.” He stood at the end of the hallway; the atmosphere in front of the room felt cold and uncompromising, much like the call he had just received. Andreas knocked once, and the door opened with the automatic, mechanical hiss of its mechanism. “Oh, Captain Andreas. So you’ve arrived.” Inside the room, General Sinclair sat upright behind a nearly empty metal desk, accompanied only by a thin file labeled “Shadow Operation.” The middle-aged general’s face betrayed no emotion whatsoever, but his eyes, sharp as an eagle’s, watched Andreas’s every move. “Captain Andreas Wilson,” General Sinclair’s voice sounded heavy and cut straight to the point, “we don’t have much time for lengthy explanations. So, take a seat!” he ordered. Andreas didn’t want to waste any time either. He immediately took a seat across from Sinclair, his shoulders straight, his gaze fixed ahead. He was ready to hear the general’s orders. “The Middle East operation is the first step,” Sinclair said, staring intently at him. “But that’s just the beginning. Shadow Ares is moving faster than we anticipated. They have a new weapon—a prototype capable of triggering global tensions in a matter of days.” Andreas clenched his fists on his thighs, his muscles tensing at the mention of the name that had haunted every step of his life. “So, what are your orders, General?” Andreas waited impatiently for General Sinclair to continue. Sinclair slid the file toward Andreas. “An infiltration mission. The information is so classified that not even your team members are allowed to know about it. You’ll be carrying out this operation alone.” “What?” Andreas’s eyes widened in shock. Then, Andreas immediately opened the file, his eyes scanning the location map with red lines marking the enemy’s lair. An arrow on the map pointed to an underground facility in an area not officially recorded on military maps. “The risks are extremely high,” Sinclair continued. “But if you fail, the world will never be the same again.” Andreas took a deep breath. “What about my team, General? Why aren’t they involved?” “They’re staying put. You must not leave a message or offer any explanation about this mission. This is a direct order from the supreme council. Do you understand?” Andreas looked disappointed that he couldn’t carry out this mission with his team members. He knew that walking away without an explanation would shatter the trust he’d built over the years with his team. But absolute obedience was the only path he could choose. Andreas stood up, ready to carry out the order. “I understand.” *** A windy night sky enveloped the headquarters as Andreas walked out with determined strides. In front of the hangar, a helicopter with its rotors already spinning waited to take him away. Dante and the rest of his team stood at the edge of the runway, their faces full of questions. “Captain Andreas!” Dante called out as he approached him with a look of utter confusion. “What’s going on? Why are you suddenly leaving us? Explain it to us!” he urged impatiently. Andreas stopped, but he didn’t turn around. “This is none of your business, Dante.” His voice was low, but firm as steel. “None of my business?” Dante clenched his teeth, his emotions boiling over. “We fought together, risked our lives together. And then you just left like that. At least give me a reason—or any kind of answer!” he urged again. This time, his emotions were on the verge of exploding. Andreas remained silent. Every word felt like a thorn stuck in his throat. But he knew that an explanation would only make things even more dangerous. He had sworn not to say anything about his new mission to his teammates. “Captain!” “Save your energy for the next battle,” Andreas said finally, then he walked away toward the helicopter without looking back at Dante. As the rotors began to spin faster, the wind whipped up sand and dust, shrouding Dante and the rest of his team, who stared on with disappointment. In the distance, in the shadows of an empty warehouse, a man stood motionless. His gaze was filled with hatred and the sinister plan he had devised. As the helicopter began to disappear behind the horizon, his lips curved into a thin, deadly smile. “Captain Andreas, get ready!” the man said.
