The girl in his dreams
*Chapter 1: Emma* Emma woke up by 4:30am every day. Not because she liked morning. Because she had to. She lived with her mother and her small brother in a one-room apartment behind the market. Her father had died when she was 12. Since then, money had always been tight. Emma was 17, in her final year of Senior Secondary. She was not the loudest girl in class, not the most fashionable. She wore the same two school uniforms, washed every two days. But teachers liked her because she was kind, and she always did her assignment, even if she did it at 11pm after work. To pay for her SAT and College forms and to help her mother, Emma did jobs. In the morning before school, she helped *Mrs. Kim* sell breakfast. During lunch break in school, she braided hair for junior students for 20 dollars. After school, she worked at a small cyber cafe, typing and printing. On Saturdays, she cleaned a small shop. She wanted one thing only: to enter university. To study Nursing. To change her family's life. *Chapter 2: Alisa* In the same class was *Alisa (Arielle)*. Alisa was the opposite of Emma. Her father owned three estates and a private school. She came to school in a black Benz. Her hair was always new. Her tongue was sharp. If you did not have money, Alisa did not see you as a human being. Everyone was scared of her, because if you offended her, she could make your life in that school miserable. She had two friends who followed her everywhere, doing whatever she said. But Alisa wanted one thing she could not buy. Jason. *Chapter 3: Jason (Jace)* Jason was the most popular boy in school. Tall, quiet, good at basketball. He was also from a rich family, but he was not proud. He was respectful. He read books. Every girl liked Jason. But Jason liked being alone. Two years ago, when they were in SS1, Jason had an accident during inter-house sports. He fell inside the old swimming pool behind the school when no one was there. The pool was dirty and deep. He hit his head, he couldn't swim well, and he started to drown. He remembered a hand pulling him. A voice shouting. Then he fainted. When he woke up in the clinic, Alisa was sitting beside him holding his hand, crying and saying "Thank God I found you." Since that day, Jason felt he owed Alisa. He talked to her. He was kind to her. Because she saved his life. What Jason did not know was that it was a lie. It was not Alisa who saved him. It was Emma. Emma had been cleaning the school compound after school for extra money when she saw Jason struggling in the water. She jumped in, even though she was also scared of water. She dragged him out. She shouted for help. Her uniform was soaking wet. But before the teachers came, Alisa arrived, saw what happened, and told Emma, "Go away. Don't tell anyone. I will say I saved him." Emma was poor. Alisa threatened to make the school sack her mother who was a cleaner in the junior section. Emma kept quiet. She ran home wet and never told anyone. So for two years, Jason thought his saviour was Alisa. *Chapter 4: The Love Triangle* In SS3, something changed. Jason started noticing Emma. Not because she dressed fine, but because of how she treated people. One day he saw her sharing her small lunch with a junior boy who had no food. Another day he saw her helping an old teacher carry books, even though she was late. One afternoon in the library, Jason saw Emma sleeping on the table. Her eyes were red. She had been working all night. He gently tapped her. "You okay?" Emma woke up quickly. "Sorry! Sorry! I was just... I didn't finish my assignment." Jason smiled. "You work too much." "Nobody will pay my school fees if I don't," she said honestly. That day they talked for 30 minutes. For Jason, it was different. With Alisa, everything was about money, parties, and gossip. With Emma, everything was real. Alisa saw them from the window. Her blood boiled. From that day, Alisa's bullying started. She poured water on Emma's chair. She told her friends to not let Emma braid their hair. She told the whole class that Emma stole her perfume. She wrote on the board: "Emma the poor beggar loves Jason." Emma did not reply. She just cleaned the board and continued reading. She did not have time for drama. She had SAT to read. But Jason saw everything. *Chapter 5: The Truth Starts to Come Out* One evening, Jason was working in the cyber cafe to print his project. The owner, *Mr. Carter*, said: "Ah, that small girl Emma, she is a hero oh. Two years ago she saved a boy from that dirty pool behind school. She entered inside like a fish." Jason froze. "What? Emma?" "Yes. She was soaked that day. I gave her my towel. She said don't tell anybody." Jason's heart started beating fast. That was his accident. The same day. The same pool. He went home that night and could not sleep. He remembered Alisa's story never had details. Alisa always said "I just found you." But Emma never said anything. He decided to find out the truth. *Chapter 6: Growing Up - University* They all wrote SAT. Emma passed very well. She got admission to study Nursing in the State University, even though she had no money for accommodation. She still worked - now she worked as a waitress in the school cafeteria in the morning, and as a tutor for year one students in the evening. Jason also entered the same University, Engineering. Alisa, with her father's money, also entered the same University, Business Administration. She thought she and Jason would be together forever. In University, Emma changed. She was still kind, but she was more confident. She cut her hair. She was still poor, but she was focused. Lecturers loved her. She became the best in her department. Jason became close to her. He would come to the cafeteria just to talk to her. He would help her carry books. He did not ask her out - he respected that she said "I don't want relationship, I want to graduate." Alisa could not bear it. She tried everything. She tried to get Emma sacked from the cafeteria by lying that she stole money. But the manager, who knew Emma's honesty, refused. She tried to pay boys to harass Emma. Jason stood up for Emma that day and fought them. That night, Jason confronted Alisa. "Alisa, did you really save me that day in the pool?" Alisa was shocked. "Of course I did! Why are you asking?" "Because Emma never told anyone. And the cafe man said he saw her wet that day. So tell me the truth." Alisa started crying, then shouting. "So what if she did? I stayed with you! I was there! She is nobody! I am the one who loves you!" And in that moment, Jason finally understood who was wicked and who was kind. He left her there. *Chapter 7: Justice and Success* In their final year in the University, there was a school award for the Best Student and Most Impactful Student. Emma won both. She had started a small foundation with the little money she saved, teaching girls in her old secondary school how to read for SAT. When she stood on the stage to give her speech, she said: "I am from a poor family. I worked five jobs a day to be here. I was bullied. I was called names. But kindness is not weakness. Hard work pays." Everyone stood up and clapped. Her mother was in the audience crying. Jason was the first to stand. Alisa was in the crowd. For the first time in her life, she felt shame. Not because she lost Jason. But because she realized everyone knew who she really was. Her money could not buy respect. Her friends had left her because they were tired of her wickedness. After the event, Alisa came to Emma and apologized. It was not a fake apology. She knelt down. "Emma, I'm sorry. I lied. You saved him. I was jealous. Please forgive me." Emma, being Emma, helped her stand up. "I forgive you. But you need to change. Not for me. For yourself." Later that evening, Jason found Emma near the library, where they first talked years ago. "You did it," he said. "We did it," Emma smiled. "I can now pay for my mother's house." Jason looked at her. Now they were 22. Adults. Graduates. "Emma, I liked you since we were 17. But I waited because you said you wanted to finish school first. Now we have finished. Can I finally take you for lunch? Just lunch, no pressure." Emma laughed, a real laugh for the first time in many years. "Yes, Jason. Just lunch. You will pay, because I am still managing." And they both laughed. Alisa did not end up with Jason. But she learned her lesson. She had to repeat a year because of her bad behavior, and her father made her do community service in her own school, cleaning and helping poor students. Slowly, she started to become a better person.
