Chapter 1
When my husband, Hector Fuller, demanded a divorce for what felt like the hundredth time, I did not cry. I didn't argue. I simply signed my name on the dotted line with total composure, then quietly began severing every last tie between us.
On the first day, I put our marital home up for sale—a property I had bought two years ago that remained a hollow, concrete shell to this very day.
On the second day, I canceled the twenty thousand monthly allowance I had been paying for his grandmother's living expenses, along with the supplementary credit card I had provided for his younger sister.
On the third day, I dialed my brother, boarded a flight, and headed back to the only home that truly mattered.
As the plane touched down in a distant city, a sudden flicker of curiosity crossed my mind.
Without me, his ever-yielding, doormat of a wife who cooked, cleaned, and paid for everything, how was Hector going to survive? How would he cater to his quick-tempered grandmother, appease his shallow sister, and look after that helpless, codependent crush he kept around?

"Ms. Buckley, if you're certain about selling, a signature right here is all I need."
Frank Larson, the real estate agent, slid the contract toward me.
Two years ago, Frank was the one who sold us this property.
I took the pen, looked around one last time at the unfurnished walls I had once hoped would shelter a real family, and signed my name.
"Price isn't a problem," I said quietly. "Just drop it as low as needed so we can close the deal quickly."
Frank stared at me, hesitation written all over his face.
I knew what was on his mind.
Two years ago, when I walked in holding Hector's arm, I pointed around the bare concrete walls, brimming with excitement as I planned every detail of the house.
Where green plants would fill the room, which corner would feature custom bookshelves...
Back then, I was glowing, filled with bright dreams for our future together.
Two years had passed, and Frank had grown from an industry novice into a top-tier sales agent.
Yet this place never became the marital sanctuary of my dreams, and now it was simply being sold off.
The turning point for everything began with a single jigsaw puzzle.
Just last week, Hector was hospitalized with a fever, and I wore myself out attending to his every need.
I pushed myself so hard that my blood sugar crashed, triggering a flare-up of my chronic stomach condition.
A sudden wave of dizziness hit me, causing me to stumble, and I instinctively reached out to steady myself against a cabinet.
In doing so, I knocked down a meticulously framed puzzle that Hector had kept hidden up high.
The sharp edge of the frame gouged a long, deep slice across my arm.
A blinding wave of agony shot through me as warm blood ran down my arm and splattered onto the glass face of the frame.
Hector rushed in at the sound of the crash, but his immediate reaction was to crouch down in frantic concern over the puzzle.
Toward me, there was only cold blame and burning impatience. "Can't you ever be careful?! Look at the mess you made on it! I am completely done with you!"
I was pale from excruciating pain, completely unable to speak, yet Hector shoved and dragged me out the front door without hesitation.
Gritting my teeth, I caught a cab to the hospital all by myself, where a doctor gave me twenty stitches.
When I dragged myself back home, I found the front door locked tight from the inside.
I knocked, apologized, and pleaded, but inside the apartment was deathly silent.
I sent him long messages trying to explain, only to realize he had blocked my number.
The early autumn night wind was already biting cold.
Wearing nothing but thin loungewear, I curled up by the door, clutching my freshly stitched arm, and shivered through the long night.
I received no pity or response from Hector, only to spot his presence in an i********: post shared by his old college crush, Kylie Collins.
Only then did I learn that Hector was never at home; he was out partying with his colleagues.
In the photo, Kylie sat right at the center of the crowd.
She held the framed puzzle that had been stained with my blood just hours ago, her face lit up with a brilliant smile.
Kylie: A full Disney character portrait put together by Hector himself! I absolutely adore this gift!
Hector sat right beside her, completely relaxed, his head leaning gently toward Kylie, wearing a warm, tender smile I had not seen on his face in ages.
Before long, Hector left a reply underneath: As long as you like it.
Kylie responded with a cute hugging emoji: I never expected Hector to remember something I mentioned in passing. I am so touched!
"Mentioned in passing." Those words felt like a poisoned dagger plunging straight into my heart.
Last month, as autumn set in and the temperature dropped, Hector surprisingly ordered a cup of hot cocoa for me out of nowhere.
At the time, I was overjoyed, foolishly assuming this distant man had finally softened up and learned a bit of romance.
Looking back now, an online joke turned out to be a prophecy: When a man suddenly treats you well out of nowhere, it means his conscience is guilty.
Her casual remark was etched deeply into his mind.
Yet after five years of dating and two years of marriage, he could never remember that I was deathly allergic to mangoes.
If our seven-year mark was destined to end in heartbreak anyway, then so be it.
