BETRAYAL AND COMPLEXITIES
I stepped into Jake’s office building, my heart fluttering with a mix of excitement and anticipation as I was going to show him the picture of our wedding clothes. This was supposed to be a special. As I pushed open the door to his office, the first thing I saw wasn’t Jake at his desk, working as usual. Instead, he was leaning against the desk, his body close to someone else’s—Ella’s. His lips were on hers. For a second, my brain couldn’t process what I was seeing. My fiancé, the man I loved, was kissing his ex-wife in the office where we had talked about our future countless times. I felt rooted to the spot, the air knocked out of my lungs. “Jake,” I managed to choke out, my voice barely above a whisper. He pulled away from Ella and looked at me, his expression blank—no guilt, no panic, no remorse. “Kaitlyn,” he said simply, like my presence was an inconvenience. “What’s going on?” I demanded, stepping further into the room. My voice trembled, but I didn’t care. Ella turned toward me with that infuriating smirk of hers. “Oh, Kaitlyn, I didn’t realize you’d be here so soon. Timing is everything, isn’t it?” I ignored her, my eyes locked on Jake. “Explain,” I said, my voice rising. “We’re getting married in two weeks, Jake. Two weeks! And you’re here… doing this?” Jake ran a hand through his hair, sighing as if I were the unreasonable one. “Kaitlyn, don’t make this a bigger deal than it has to be.” “A bigger deal?” My voice cracked. “You’re kissing your ex-wife, Jake! How is this not a big deal?” “I can’t do this anymore,” he said flatly. My chest tightened. “What do you mean you ‘can’t do this’?” “I mean, I’m done.” The words hung in the air like a death sentence. I stared at him, hoping—praying—that he would take it back. But he didn’t. “You’re *done*?” My voice broke as the tears started to flow. “We’ve been together for five years, Jake. Five years! And you’re telling me this now? After everything we’ve been through?” Ella laughed softly, and I turned to glare at her. “What’s so funny?” She shrugged, her smirk widening. “Oh, Kaitlyn, you’re so naive. You should’ve seen this coming. Jake and I? We’ve always been meant to be. You were just… what’s the word? A placeholder.” The audacity of her words burned through me like acid. I turned back to Jake, desperation in my voice. “Tell me this isn’t true. Tell me she’s lying.” Jake looked away, his silence confirming the worst. “Jake,” I said, my voice shaking. “You told me you were over her. You promised me.” “I thought I was,” he admitted. “But things have changed. I’ve changed. I can’t pretend anymore, Kaitlyn.” “Pretend?” I repeated, my voice rising. “Everything we’ve built together—our plans, our dreams—was all pretend to you?” “It’s better this way,” he said, his tone frustratingly calm. “Better?” I spat. “For who, Jake? For you? Because it sure as hell isn’t better for me.” Ella stepped closer to him, her hand resting possessively on his arm. “He doesn’t owe you an explanation, Kaitlyn. You’ve overstayed your welcome in his life, and it’s time you moved on.” My body trembled with anger and heartbreak. “You don’t get to talk to me like that. You’re the one who walked away from him, and now you come crawling back, ruining everything?” Ella rolled her eyes. “Sweetheart, you’re embarrassing yourself.” I turned back to Jake, my voice pleading now. “Jake, please… Don’t do this. Don’t throw everything away for her.” His gaze met mine, cold and unyielding. “It’s done, Kaitlyn. Just let it go.” A fresh wave of tears spilled down my cheeks. I clutched the edge of his desk to steady myself, my legs threatening to give out beneath me. “How could you do this to me?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he walked past me, his hand gently guiding Ella toward the door. Ella glanced over her shoulder, her smile victorious. “Good luck, Kaitlyn. You’re going to need it.” As the door closed behind them, I sank into the nearest chair, the weight of the betrayal crashing down on me. --- By the time I arrived at Nora’s house, my tears had dried, but the pain still clung to me like a second skin. “Kaitlyn!” Nora exclaimed as she opened the door. Her eyes widened in alarm when she saw my face. “What happened?” I couldn’t hold it in any longer. The words came tumbling out, each one ripping open the wound a little more. By the time I finished, I was sobbing again. “That absolute piece of garbage,” Nora said, pulling me into a tight hug. “I can’t believe he’d do this to you.” Her phone buzzed on the counter, and she glanced at it with a grimace. “Damn it. I have to go to this work event tonight. Investors, clients, the whole deal. But I don’t want to leave you like this.” “I’ll come with you,” I said before I could think it through. Nora looked at me skeptically. “Are you sure? It’s not exactly a fun night out.” “I can’t stay here,” I said, shaking my head. “I need to get out, distract myself. Please.” --- The event was lavish, with sparkling chandeliers and servers weaving through the crowd with trays of champagne. I felt out of place, but the wine helped dull the ache in my chest. I had just finished my second glass when a deep voice spoke behind me. “Rough night?” I turned to see a man standing beside me at the bar. He was tall and striking, his green eyes glinting with a mix of curiosity and charm. “You could say that,” I replied, taking another sip of wine. “Care to share?” he asked, tilting his head. I let out a bitter laugh. “Not unless you have an hour to spare and a strong stomach for drama.” He chuckled. “Sounds intriguing.” We talked, the conversation light and effortless. He introduced himself as Nelson, the CEO of a thriving pharmaceutical company. He didn’t ask too many questions, and I didn’t volunteer too much information. For the first time that night, I felt like I could breathe again. --- I went on to his room and had a wild night with him. The next morning, reality hit me like a freight train. I woke in an unfamiliar room, my head pounding and my body tangled in soft sheets. Nelson was not beside me. The events of the previous night came rushing back, and I groaned, burying my face in my hands. Reaching for my phone, I saw a new message: **“Last night was… unexpected. Ella would lose her mind if she knew. – A.”** I froze. My heart raced as I reread the message. Ella? No. No, no, no. I had slept with her husband and pictures of us at the bar were circulating the Internet. Immediately, I arranged my stuff and dashed out to the door then— Bang!!! a sharp pain shot through my head, and the world went dark. When I woke, my wrists and ankles were bound, and I was in a dimly lit room. Panic surged as I struggled against the ropes. “Hello?” I called, my voice trembling. “Is anyone there?” Only silence greeted me, thick and suffocating—
