Prologue
Have you ever felt the cold pitter-patter of rain bouncing off your skin? Ice-shattering droplets that feel like sharp knives stabbing you repeatedly until you become numb, so numb you can’t move or think?
I remember that feeling. My bones were shattering, lying on the cold, hard asphalt, paralyzed and unable to move. I recall the feeling so vividly and I was afraid. My fear was so intense that it loomed over me as I lay completely still.
This memory of mine is faint, but if there’s anything I do remember, it was thinking that was the end. Everything around me starts to go dark, and I can feel myself slowly slipping away. I'm surrounded by peace and silence. I'm separated by a fog covering this distant memory. I can see it, but I can't make it out. Just when I think I've given up allowing the darkness to consume me, I see a distant light, blaring in front of my eyes, and by some miracle, I feel like I'm able to move again.
I hear the sound of a distant, constant, steady beat, that rings inside my head over and over again, until my eyes begin to twitch.
Beep….beep….beep…
My eyes flutter.
