Chapter 3

535 Words
The next morning, I got up early and started packing my things. Adrian, who had been gone all night, walked in. The moment he saw the luggage, a flicker of surprise crossed his face, and he immediately grabbed my hand. "Where are you going?" I didn't look up and simply replied, "The company has a major project coming up. I'll probably be staying at the office for the next few days." His expression softened. Then, as if out of habit, he stepped behind me, wrapped his arms around my waist, and lowered his voice flirtatiously. "How long will the project take? You know I can't stand being without you, babe." I used to love moments like this between us, the kind of sweetness only couples shared. But now, for some reason, his touch only made me feel sick. I quietly pulled myself out of his arms and continued packing. With just a casual glance, Adrian noticed my bare ring finger. His expression immediately darkened. "Where's your wedding ring? Why aren't you wearing it?" The questions in a row caught me off guard. "It's dirty, so I took it off for now." Maybe it was just my imagination, but I noticed Adrian seemed relieved. He smiled casually and said, "If it's dirty, then don't wear it anymore. It's not worth much anyway. I'll get you a better one for our anniversary in a few days." 'Right. It isn't worth much anyway.' Four years ago, when Adrian proposed to me, it happened in a hotel room. Afterward, with tears still lingering in my eyes, I looked at him and asked, "Adrian, will you marry me?" He froze for two seconds before taking out a plain ring from his pocket and slipping it onto my finger. There were no flowers, no cheers, and not even a proposal on one knee. Yet I was foolish enough to believe he would give me the happiness I wanted. Looking back now, my naivety was almost laughable. After zipping up my suitcase, I went to wash my hands in the bathroom. Just as the cold water touched my fingertips, my phone suddenly lit up with a notification. Selena had uploaded an engagement video on her social media. The camera shook slightly as Adrian knelt down amid everyone's cheers, carefully sliding a diamond ring onto her ring finger. Under the blinding ceiling lights, the massive diamond sparkled brilliantly. And that same light pierced straight through my eyes. When I refreshed the page, the video was gone. Instead, I received a private message from Selena. Selena: Don't be mad, Evelyn. We were just fooling around last night. Selena: I don't know why I accidentally tagged you. We originally agreed not to tell you. Selena: You're not angry, are you?" Her words dripped with provocation, one after another. Outside the bathroom door, Adrian was knocking. "Babe, what kind of ring do you like? I'll take you to pick one out tomorrow, okay?" His gentle, caring voice outside the door mixed with Selena's cruel betrayal on my phone. Together, they became a dull knife, slowly cutting through my already shattered heart. I took a deep breath, dried my hands, and called back toward the door, "Okay."
