Chapter 2

I suddenly had no desire to stay any longer. I got up and walked toward the exit. My sudden movement caught everyone off guard. They quickly realized what was happening and reminded Adrian, "Adrian... your wife is still here." Adrian frowned and instinctively replied, "She's here, so what? It's not like..." He seemed to realize what he was about to say and slowly lowered his hand from Selena's eyes. He cleared his throat, trying to hide his embarrassment. "Selena is still young. She hasn't been exposed to things like this before. She's different from you." I smiled, but a trace of sorrow flashed in my eyes. He had forgotten that Selena was actually three years older than me. But that was because he didn't love me. So he never cared about my feelings. Around me, he had always been careless and had no reservations. I walked past them, ready to leave. But Selena suddenly stepped in front of me. She looked up timidly and spoke in a soft voice: "Evelyn, don't be angry. I actually came here to return something." As she spoke sweetly, she gently pushed a velvet box toward me. The lid opened, revealing a massive diamond ring resting quietly inside. Under the bright ceiling lights, it shimmered brilliantly. "Last time, I saw the wedding ring on your ring finger. I was so envious that I casually mentioned I wanted one too. I never expected..." Selena glanced shyly at Adrian, her voice soft and delicate. "I never expected Adrian would remember. To make me happy, he specially asked someone overseas to bid on this ring and bought it just to cheer me up. But I really couldn't feel right about keeping it, so I came here to return it to you." She claimed she was returning it. But her fingers were tightly gripping the edge of the box, her fingertips turning pale. She clearly had no intention of letting go. I lowered my eyes to the simple diamond ring on my own finger and suddenly felt ridiculous. Ten years of marriage. More than four thousand days together. And Adrian had dismissed me with nothing more than a plain, ordinary ring. 'I have been cheapened beyond belief in this marriage.' I took two steps back. For the first time, I didn't care about saving Adrian's dignity. I pushed open the door and walked out. The private room instantly erupted into chaos. Someone sneered and said loudly, "What a joke. A woman who's already been used up actually dares to disrespect Adrian?" "Shut up!" Adrian shot him a cold glare, his expression darkening. I left the bar at two in the morning. The cold streetlights illuminated the empty road. The chilly wind brushing past my hair pulled me back into memories from years ago. Ten years ago, when I had just entered the workforce, I met Adrian. He told me he had never met anyone as pure and innocent as me. He said he wanted to have a relationship with me that would last forever. I thought it was ridiculous. I rejected him again and again. Until one day, my company sent me to negotiate a business deal. The other company's boss suddenly reached out and touched my thigh. Terrified and desperate to escape, I didn't know what to do. Then Adrian appeared. Without hesitation, he beat that man to the ground. Afterward, he took me away from there and held me in his arms, promising, "I'll give you a home." I wanted a home. So we fell in love. Then we got married. For ten years together, before and after marriage, he spoiled me and made countless promises of eternal love. But after ten years of marriage, I only realized today... Aside from this plain ring on my finger, I had never received a single meaningful gift from him and I had barely even met his family. 'A damn marriage. A damn love story. And a damn fool I've been...' Tears blurred my vision. I took off my wedding ring and threw it into the trash can. 'Adrian, I want a divorce.' There were only six days left before I left for the overseas branch.
