The Family Trap

I stood frozen, wondering what I was supposed to do in this situation, when the woman swiveled me around, holding my hands as she sat me on the couch and sat beside me. She looked very young, like she was in her late thirties, except when she smiled and those wrinkles around her eyes popped up. "Tell me, dear, why were you crying?" she asked seriously while turning to glare at Adrian. I opened my mouth and closed it again. What was I supposed to say? That Adrian suspected me of selling company information and that I was actually guilty? I didn't even know what to do. The old woman, thinking she was right, said, "So he had shouted at you, right? To make you cry?" she fumed, ready to get up again, when I quickly said, "Actually, something got into my eyes, and Adrian was helping me with it." The old woman turned to look at Adrian, who was actually looking at me instead, before saying, "Fine, then. Let's have breakfast together." "I thought we had agreed that we'd be coming there today. Why the surprise visit?" Adrian asked, annoyed, but the old woman couldn't be bothered. "And what was the guarantee that you'd actually bring her home? Someone whom you refused to show me her picture!" she grunted, spilling some curses, and my eyes widened. Adrian didn't say anything, grabbing a tissue from his desk and then handing it to me. I took it, feeling his hand brush mine. I wiped my face, taking a deep breath to calm down. "That said, I'm actually very hungry right now, and I'm sure both of you haven't eaten. Let's have breakfast together," she proposed with a smile, and I scrunched my face. I forced a smile onto my face, hoping Adrian would reject the idea, but he agreed, and I pulled on a smile. The old woman hooked her arm around mine and dragged me with her while Adrian followed behind us. "Let's take the private elevator," Adrian proposed, and I nodded. I didn't want unnecessary attention on me. We got to the parking lot, and the three of us entered. The car was such that the seats were facing each other, and Adrian's grandmother and I sat on one side while Adrian sat opposite us. "Tell me, Ariana, where are you from?" she asked, looking at me, and I felt Adrian's curious gaze on me. I scrambled for an answer. "Texas. I'm from Texas," I lied, wincing at how I'd been lying quite often lately. "But your resume had New York?" Adrian asked, looking at me, and I shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. "I schooled in New York, but I'm from Texas," I said quickly, looking away at the passing scenery. I heard Adrian hum, but I dared not look at either of them again. I couldn't be any more grateful when we reached the restaurant. This was another high-class California restaurant. Elysium. We entered and were given a private suite. Adrian pulled out the chair for me, and I murmured my thanks before pulling one out for his grandmother, who waved at him to stop while smiling proudly. "I'm so glad Adrian treats you well. I had been scared that he'd die a celibate!" she muttered, shaking her head as she took a sip. I smiled shyly, looking at Adrian, whose gaze softened when it met mine. "Oh, your grandfather wanted to be here as well, but that old man's back caught up with him," the old woman said, shaking her head. I asked, concerned, as I picked up a glass of water, "Is he alright?" The old woman chuckled and said, "Oh dear, don't worry about him. He'll be up and banging at night." My eyes widened at the blatant shamelessness as the water entered the wrong pipe, and I held my nose to hold in the pain. "Grandma!" Adrian scolded, pinching the space between his brows as he patted my back. Adrian selected the menu for us on a side tablet and powered it off. "What?" the old woman asked before her eyes widened as she turned to look at me. I bit my lip when I saw the look in her eyes. "Haven't you both banged already?!" she asked. Adrian muttered, "I don't think we owe you our bedroom affairs." The old woman smiled. "Of course not, but you owe me the results! I don't care if you both give me my grandchildren even before marriage." Marriage?! Grandchildren? . I felt dizzy at the conversation. It's not like I didn't want that. But I couldn't bring myself to imagine such a life when all I'd ever done was lie. "There's no need to rush it, Grandma. Ariana and I are not ready," Adrian said, and the old woman harrumphed. The waitress walked in, putting our food on the table, and I picked up my cutlery to dig in when she turned to me. "What do you think about you both spending the night with the whole family?" I turned to find Adrian looking at me as if the decision was in my hands. I know I'd f****d up letting this woman see me, but letting the whole family see me would be suicidal. "I—uh... have some unfinished business that I need to attend to," I said, hoping she would drop it, but I should've known. This old woman was out for my head! "Nonsense. Why do you have to worry about work when your boss is coming? What do you think, Adrian?" she asked, shoving her food into her mouth. Adrian winked at me. "Excellent." Okay. Now I think leaving the country tomorrow wouldn't be so bad
