Change of Plans

Aria's POV ‎ ‎I dragged my feet from the meeting, barely able to contain myself as my hands trembled. ‎ ‎What the f**k happened?!. This had not been the plan! ‎ ‎I slammed my office door shut, snatched my phone from my desk, and punched in a number before dialing. ‎ ‎The moment the call connected, I yelled into the phone. ‎ ‎"What the f**k is the meaning of this?! This is not what we agreed on!" ‎ ‎The other person on the line remained calm. "Well, change of plans. We've decided to move things forward. You'll be leaving the US next week." ‎ ‎"What?!" I asked, shocked. I knew I was going to leave, but I hadn't expected it to be this soon. The thought alone made my heart ache, and I bit my lip. ‎ ‎"Don't tell me you like it there already, Aria. You know the deal. Now finish everything before next week so that we can get you out of the country safely. That's the only window left. Otherwise, you'll be stuck there." The other person ended the call. ‎ ‎I stood there, frozen. Something wet touched my cheeks. Tears. Yes, I knew I was leaving, but I hadn't expected it to be this soon. I sank into my chair, burying my face in my hands as sobs shook my body. ‎I hated this. I hated that leaving Adrian suddenly felt like someone was ripping something out of me. ‎ ‎After what felt like an hour my sobs finally quietened. ‎ ‎A knock sounded on the door. I quickly grabbed a tissue from my desk, wiped my face, and took several deep breaths to calm myself before opening the door. ‎ ‎I froze. Adrian stood there . Did he perhaps hear something? . Fear flashed through me, but I quickly shook my head. That wasn't possible. The door was soundproof. ‎ ‎"Your eyes look swollen," he muttered as he stepped into my office. I closed the door behind him. ‎ ‎"Something got into my eyes," I lied. His cold expression softened immediately. "I'm sure it must have been something serious to have you ball your eyes out." ‎ ‎What did that mean? . I was still thinking about the Adrian I'd seen in the conference room. The man who had threatened whoever betrayed him without even blinking. ‎ ‎"Let's have breakfast," he said. "I forgot to call you for breakfast because of everything that was going on, and it's almost lunchtime." ‎ ‎I nodded, trying desperately not to cry again. He stepped out first. I waited for a moment before following him. ‎ ‎Along the way, I caught Kendra's eye. She winked at me, and I smiled back. I entered the elevator, which was already occupied by several other employees. ‎ ‎I kept my eyes down. I only had a few days. A few days to gather everything the company was planning to release over the next three years. ‎ ‎A few days before I had to disappear. The elevator doors opened, and I stepped out, walking toward the car waiting a few steps away from the company. I slipped into the back seat. ‎ ‎"Are you okay?". Adrian's voice pulled me from my thoughts. He was watching me intently. I forced myself to nod. ‎ ‎"You look troubled," he probed, brushing a few strands of hair away from my face. ‎I melted into his touch. "I'm fine," I lied, leaning my head against his chest. ‎ ‎Adrian chuckled and ran his hand through my hair. "I actually didn't expect anyone in the company to be brave enough to leak classified information to another company." ‎ ‎I stiffened. Well, that traitor is right before you. I bit my lip. ‎ ‎"It's been a while since I've gotten to actually torture someone limb by limb," he said darkly. ‎ ‎My breathing grew shallower. I had hoped to linger a little longer while gathering the products I was supposed to send, but it didn't sound like Adrian was joking. ‎ ‎As if noticing my stiff shoulders, he gently pulled me closer. "Relax, Ariana. You would never be at the end of my wrath unless you cheated on me, which I actually know you wouldn't." he said, flashing me an eerie smile and I pulled on a tight one . ‎ ‎Well, I'm far worse than a cheat.
