20. I’m Scared

BEN’S POV Things were not happening the way Curtis had imagined. He had hoped by being open and revealing our relationship to the world that the whispering would end and we could be left in peace but it hadn’t worked like that. Every reporter in New York wanted an exclusive, we had calls asking us to be in a documentary about our relationship and they wouldn’t leave Angel alone. Though she didn’t say anything we could tell she was getting overwhelmed by it all. Only the other day was she walking to work when a group of reporters came rushing over to her and knocked her down by accident. It took everything in me to keep Curtis restrained. He was ready to sue every single one of those reporters but Angel wouldn’t have it. The minute Curtis owned to his misjudgement we decided to take Angel away for a little white. Fashion week was just around the corner and she would need to focus so this might be our only chance in a while to take her away. She held my hand through the airport as we were escorted to the private plane. Angel tried to contain her smile but we could see it clearly. “Will you tell me where you’re taking me now?” She asks. “We’re taking you to Spain.” Angel nodded. Sudden panic washed over me. Was she not happy with Spain? My fear washed away when she squealed, clapping her hands and taking herself around the private plane to have a look. We find her in the bedroom staring at the big bed. “Don’t worry, we’ll christen that later,” Curtis declared. And so we did. Three times in fact. After that Angel slept. We were started to get worried that she was sleeping too much and when I tried waking her up for food she wasn’t interested and rolled back over to sleep. I joined Curtis on the sofa. “Should we worry?” I ask. “No. She’s been through a lot since she’s been back. Plus we do keep her up at night, she just needs time to recharge, she’ll be fine.” “What if this all gets to her, Curtis?” Curtis looks up from the newspaper. “Angel won’t leave us, no matter how hard it goes. She knows that she’s the light in our dark world, our life line. She won’t go anywhere.” I nodded, looking back into the bedroom where she slept peacefully. I couldn’t stand being apart from her especially when she looked so cute and crawled in next to her. She curled into me and it felt like home. I hoped Curtis was rig her, that she would never leave. I couldn’t have anyone else leave me. FLASHBACK My face is raw from the tears, my voice left hoarse from the cries that no one hears. How long has it been? Will anyone ever find me? There’s a loud noise and the tiniest bit of light. Someone is coming. I scurry into the corner and see a shadow as he comes to my cell and unlocks the door, dropping a limp figure in the corner. I don’t move. Don’t make a noise. I wait until he leaves and crawl forward to the figure. He’s a boy, the same age as me by the looks of it. I nudge him lightly and he stirs. He panics and I hold his shoulders down. It’s not good to make too much noise. “I’m Ben, what’s your name?” “I’m Curtis.” END OF FLASHBACK.
