ANGEL’S POV
I couldn’t believe they found me.
My own home was supposed to be my safe haven and yet they had figured out where I lived.
Now every time I open the door, my hand starts shaking. What if open the door and they’re there waiting for me on the other side?
No amount of coffee can ever seem to prepare me in the mornings anymore.
Despite getting myself riled up, I never find them on the other side of the door.
Instead there’s gifts.
Gifts from them.
The first day it was a bouquet of flowers, lilies, my favourite.
The second day was a huge box of my favourite coffee sachets.
And every day it’s something else.
Something else that I love and they know about.
I don’t think I ever realised until now how much they truly knew me.
Stop.
I can’t think like that.
Though it broke my heart when I saw the chocolates on the ground, this morning; like everyday I left them behind and got in the lift, staring longingly as the doors closed on a luxury that would only have shown my weakness.
I couldn’t become distracted now.
I needed to focus.
After all today was going to be my first full day of work and I needed to get through it.
I had spent the three days after the elevator incident at home, sketching away like a mad women. My designs voiced my fury and pain and then transgressed into power and bravery that would see me through.
Nanna loved my designs and started adding a little embellishments here and there.
We were quickly turning my amateur designs into something worthy and at this rate it was going to be a show, people would always remember.
By lunch time I had spent most of the morning on my feet running from the different divisions, repeating my concept and ideas to everyone and anyone who was near by. At this point everything was written in stone. No one could change it and now we had to make it amazing.
“You should go and eat, you haven’t stopped, Angel.” Nanna said.
“Honestly, I’m fine.”
“And I am still in charge. You are to leave this office and not return until you have had something to eat and drink.”
I tried to refuse but she wouldn’t have it. I knew the minute she turned her stern eyes on me that this wasn’t a fight I was going to win.
I grabbed my bag in defeat and headed for the stairs. After last time I wasn’t going to get myself in that kind of position again. Besides it was the healthier option.
I was busy thinking about where I could go for lunch that was easy and quick when I felt someone step into place next to me.
“We thought we could treat you to lunch.”
I gasped and came to a sudden stop seeing Curtis.
“Look before you scream or create a scene. Just let Ben and I take you out for lunch. Hear what we have to say and then after that if you want us gone, we will never come near you again.”
I looked around but I couldn’t see Ben.
“Ben’s outside. We didn’t want to overwhelm you.”
Curtis steps forward and I’m surprised when I didn’t step back.
“Please. It’s only lunch. We will go somewhere public and if you want to set a timer you can.”
“You get twenty minutes.”
He beamed and then hid it quickly, worried how I would react.
We walked up the road in silence until we got into the restaurant and sat down. We placed our orders and it was then that Ben nudged Curtis to get the ball rolling.
“That night. Things didn’t go according to plan which I know sounds like the worse explanation ever. But what we had imagined was taking you out for a romantic dinner. Confessing our undying love for you and then proposing with a key to our apartment. We wanted you to move in with us so you could get more comfortable being around us.”
“We wanted to start the next chapter of our lives with you, Angel.” Ben chimes in.
I can feel my eyes watering and my lip quivering but I tried to keep calm and focus on the wrap that was placed in front of me.
“We ordered one drink that night because we wanted to give you our undivided attention. But that drink was spiked. Both of ours. We completely blacked out that night that’s why we didn’t realise what we did until now.”
I look at them both, searching for any hint of a lie but there is none.
Something stirs inside me.
I hate seeing them in pain.
But what about my pain?
I can’t forget about how I felt.
The nightmares I’ve suffered.
“Please forgive us. I love you, Angel. I would never hurt you.”
“I love you too,” Ben says.
“But you did hurt me.” I croak. “Unintentionally or not you both caused me pain. We can’t undo the past but I don’t think I can forget it so easily either. I’m sorry.”
Ben nods though there’s tears slipping down his eyes.
“Time’s up.” I say apologetically as I get up and leave the restaurant, leaving Curtis and Ben behind.
I’m halfway to the office when I suddenly question what I’ve done and why it feels like I just left my heart back there in the restaurant.
