10 Alice had to wait until it was safe. Then she raced to Marnie’s side. She lifted Marnie’s head into her lap. Blood covered the right side of Marnie’s face. Alice gently peeled the hood off her head to examine the wound. Marnie’s short brown hair was plastered to the sides of her face, wet with sweat and blood. “Is she all right?” Major Zimholt called. “I don’t know,” Alice said, her throat catching. She felt for Marnie’s pulse. Steady, but not strong. She could see Ted in the distance sprinting toward them down the side of the airfield. Behind him a few other people moved into action.
