The next morning, I get a call from the police. Leonard had already warned me that once Vanguard Life Sciences was under investigation, things could move fast, but I still feel my stomach drop when I hear the officer’s voice on the other end.
“Ms. Alice,” he says, “we have news regarding Vanguard Life Sciences. We wanted you to hear it from us directly.”
I clutch the phone tighter. “Yes? What happened?”
There’s a pause, almost as if he’s savoring the moment before giving me the full picture. “Our investigation confirmed your suspicions. Vanguard Life Sciences has multiple cases of fraud on record, and during the investigation of their properties, we found evidence of the medicine currently being distributed illegally under Greenwood Biotech’s name.”
