CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR Kaya returned home from the grocery store the next night as the bowlegged Mrs. Johnson tottered off her porch. She waved at Kaya, salt-and-pepper curls bouncing. “How you doing, Kaya?” “I’m fine.” Kaya got the grocery bags from the back of her car. “You going out, huh?” “Girl, yes.” Mrs. Johnson stood at her silver Volvo station wagon, digging for her keys. “It’s my bible study night.” She opened the car, maneuvering her huge hips into the front seat. “I ain’t been in months.
