Chapter 2: Born to be Alpha

940 Words
(Owen's P.O.V.) I've sat through this lecture a hundred times. 'I'm to be in charge when I find my mate. I have to train and be the best wolf in the pack. No one will respect me if I'm weak. I was born for this.' I silently sit here and let my dad try to drill this into my brain. Little does he know, I've had it memorized since I was 8. Obviously growing up knowing I'm the Alpha's son has made me understand that one day I'll have to take over the job. But I just don't want to. Being Alpha has lost all of its appeal since the day my parents stopped treating me like a kid. I wasn't allowed to have fun. I could only train, train, train. "Dad. I know all this. You tell me all the time. I'm sorry my friends and I were having some fun. Can I leave now?" "OWEN ZACHARY DAVIS! Do NOT interrupt me! You obviously 'don't know all this' because you still act like a child and not at all like you were born to be Alpha." My dad yells in his Alpha voice which causes me to flinch and retract further into my seat. The door pops open suddenly and a voice cries out "Elijah!" sternly. My mother walks in and storms right up to my father. Putting a finger in his face, she says "I think that's enough." Then, calming down, she puts her hand on his arm instead. You can physically see both of my parents relax a little under the simplest touch. My mother whispers something in my dad's ear to which he just grunts in reply. After one more look at me, he walks out of the room and shuts the door. My mom looks at me with concern in her eyes. I stand and my mom grabs my arms. "Honey, I know you just wanted some fun, but did you really have to do that?" "What?" I ask innocently. "What? Really? First throwing water balloons on the pack while they were training- a training I think you were supposed to be apart of weren't you?- and then you interrupt your father as he's giving his speech? I thought you knew better." I chuckle lightly at the reminder of the water balloons. "Mom. It was just some fun. I really didn't think it'd be that big of a deal." My mom pinched the bridge of her nose with her fingers. "Yes you did. You knew it'd get your father all in a tizzy. And I understand you thought it'd be funny, but you don't have time to only be thinking about jokes. In 2 weeks you're turning 18. Your wolf will be primed to find his mate and after that-" I cut her off. "I'll become the Alpha" My mom smiled at me like she thought that I realized what was more important. I wasn't done however. "But mom. What if I don't want to be Alpha...?" I look down at the floor, unable to meet her eyes. She takes a step back and gasps. After recomposing herself, my mom takes a few steps forward until she's right in front of me. "Honey. You were born to be Alpha. It's in your blood." I got angry after hearing this. "I know it's in my blood! That's all you guys ever tell me! That's all I ever hear! Alpha this, Alpha that. Well guess what? I don't give a f**k about being in control of a whole pack." I turn on my heel and storm out of my father's office, slamming the door behind me. 'I can't do this anymore. I can't sit around and pretend to want something that I don't. I deserve something better and so does the pack. I'm leaving. Tonight.' * * * * With my backpack on my back and my sneakers on my feet, I listen carefully to hear if there's anyone out in the hallway. When I'm sure it's empty, I creak open my door and silently slip out. Having lived in the pack house my whole life, I know exactly where each creak in the floor is, the best route to get out, and where each guard will be at the exact time. What? This isn't my first time sneaking out of my house. I made it just passed the front door when I was suddenly jumped. After a long struggle, I made it on top and pulled back my fist to punch my attacker in his face. I stopped when I saw who it was. "Fredrick?" I whispered, getting off of him. "Woah dude. You need to chill a bit." Fredrick said picking himself up and chuckling slightly. "Me? You're the one who attacked me!" He just shrugged. "Gotta make sure you're always ready for a fight." Fredrick is the son of our Beta. Which makes him my Beta once I'm Alpha. Little does he know that he'll probably never get the chance. "So. Where are you off to at this hour?" Fred crosses his arms over his chest like he's my dad scolding me. "No where Fred. In fact, you didn't even see me." Fred rolls his eyes. "Yeah okay. See you in an hour when the border patrol finds ya and drags your ass back here." With that, he flicked his hand as if to say goodbye and went into the house. 'No one's going to find me. I can be sure of that.' I run towards the woods and the pack border, ready to be free and start my own life wherever I want.
