Dane’s POV
Records; Father
“Interesting. So the aim was me and not my mother?” Tears blur her vision but she refuses to let a single drop leave her eyes.
“Look Eliana,I’m really sorry for your loss. And I mean it. The whole thing really is a coincidence. I didn’t mean for it to happen and most importantly, I didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt. I know you will not believe me because of just how coincidental things are.” My mind keeps going back to the anonymous messages. Someone is pulling strings from the back.
“Hmm. Dane now apologizes at liberty. How stupid do you think I am Dane?” She grits her teeth in annoyance. Something she only does when she’s really annoyed.
“I can promise you Eliana. I didn’t wish for any of these to happen. I didn’t.” I really hope she would just listen. But that’s not Eliana. It has never been her. If other women were to walk into the room with floral energy, she’d walk into the room with dominance.
“Explain to me how you miraculously appeared at all of the incident scenes at the exact time they took place. Few minutes later, I bump into you walking away from my mother’s room.”
“That’s because I thought it was you Eliana and I wanted to be sure it wasn’t.” Even I cringe at my own words.
“What more evidence do you want?” There’s a bitter smile on her face almost like she got me where she wanted me.
“Who the f**k are you talking to, Eliana?” Someone is unto us. The last thing I need is for her to reveal too much.
“Mr Dane Thorn. You are under arrest for the attempted murder of Eliana Voss, the murder of Roseline Voss and the vandalization of legal properties.” The police comes right on cue.
There’s a relief that fills me. At least she’s not giving information to the wrong people.
I stand there calmly with a smile. All I need to do is make a call to have all of them sacked and desperate for jobs again.
“So you let Eliana put you, hungry people to this. In the midst of my benevolence today, I’ll be extremely kind. I’ll give each and everyone of you a second chance to walk out of that passage. None of us here ever heard anything. We never saw anything. Are we good?” I tuck my hands in my pocket and I wait for them to stop it with the act.
“What you say Mr Dane can and will be used against you in the court of law. Hands above your head.” The lady at the front apparently doesn’t budge which is weird.
“Sure. But that’ll be after I take this call.” For all I know, it could just be the right call at the right time.
“Celeste?” My usually rigid face morphs into worry. My sister rarely asks for my help to handle things unless it’s beyond normal.
There’s an unusual pause on the phone which is also unlike her.
“What is it?” I decide to break the silence.
“Father. Dane, Father is dead. The doctor called me to. Dane.” She’s struggling to articulate her words properly.
I immediately rush to Father’s room. Just as Celeste said, father is dead. The machine the doctor told me reads his heart is beeping. He’s gone.
It feels like there is a black hole tearing wider in my chest
“the hose and the oxygen, they’re not connected.” I press my fists deep into a ball.
“The hospital’s footage.” says it subtly but loud enough for everyone to walk into the surveillance room.
The nurse handles it. It’s not very clear but I see it.
“Isn’t that.. Eliana?” One of the nurses point it out. Originally, I wanted to let this slide. I’m trying really hard to place constraints on my anger.
“What?”
“You’re going to try to deny it now despite the evidence?”
She stays quiet. The look on her face is purely that of confusion. Almost like she really didn’t kill him.
“Eliana?” I take a step closer to her, my patience is running very thin.
“I swear,I am not involved.”
“You expect me to take your word over the proof playing before everyone, Eliana?”
“Give me one good reason why I should go after your father,Dane?” She has that silly pout on her lips again.
“Isn’t it suspicious how on the exact day you lose your mother, few hours after she is brought to this hospital, my father suddenly dies.” I do not mean to sound cruel and menacing, I’m not sure anyone in my shoes will particularly do better.
“Fine. Believe whatever it is you wish to believe and you can hand me over to the police.”
“Hmm.” I smile.
I take slow gradual steps towards her.
“I’m not going to press charges,I’m dropping the case.” I say it loudly.
“And you too. We can call this a fair day.” I gaze at her.
“However this thing between us Eliana,” I come close to her ears and whisper.
“It is not over until I have augmented it. Do I make myself clear?”
“I do not live by your rules Dane.”
“One good day, you will. That’s a promise. “
“Sweet dreams baby boy.”
“I don’t do dreams. I rather swim in hell.”
“One day,you will be there.”
“I always go there Eliana.”
“Wait until I have my revenge Dane. Only then wil you know and understand the word ‘hell.’
“Eliana.” I draw closer to her.
“Stay. Away. From. Me.”
“And if I choose not to?”
I hear her gnashing her teeth.
“Hmm?”
She steps back and before I realize, she slams her knee into my crotch.
“You know very well Dane, just how different I am from the other ladies. I won’t think twice.” She walks away and I writhe in pain.
“Sir.”
“Shut the f**k up.”
“To the family house. I need to speak with Celeste.”
I get to the house and just as I expect, Celeste is waiting.
“Dane.”
“Cut the crap. Celeste. I know you know who really killed Father.”
