Chapter 1: The Return of the Outcast
The rumors said Sienna Vance died the day her mother sold her soul to the King empire, but as I stepped off the private jet onto the asphalt of Bel-Air, I had never felt more alive.
Six months ago, I was the fat, silent girl hiding in oversized hoodies, taking the brunt of my stepmother’s cruelty and my ex-boyfriend’s public humiliations. Today, the breeze whipped a strand of mahogany hair across my face, catching the edge of a emerald silk gown that clung to every newly sculpted curve of my body. The summer away hadn’t just changed my waistline—it had forged an armor around my heart.
"Stop staring at your heels and hold your head up," Chloe whispered, adjusting the diamond ear cuff on my left ear. Her sharp, hazel eyes scanned the valet area of the King Estate. "You didn't spend three months doing two-a-day workouts and underground martial arts conditioning just to let these high-society vultures see you sweat."
"I’m not sweating, Chlo," I said, my voice smooth and icy. "I’m just waiting for the bloodbath."
The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom swung open, unleashing a wave of classical symphony music, gold lighting, and the scent of expensive champagne. This was the annual King Empire Gala—the night where the elite of the city gathered to toast to wealth, bloodlines, and power.
As Chloe and I stepped past the velvet ropes, the music seemed to stutter. Conversations died out in waves. Heads turned, eyes widened, and whispers swept through the grand hall like wildfire.
“Who is that girl with Chloe Reed?”
“Look at her back… is that the Vance girl?”
“No way. Sienna was an ugly duckling. That woman looks like a goddess.”
I kept my spine straight, letting the silk trail behind me. Every eye in the room was on me, but I was only searching for one person—the boy who broken my heart and left me in the rain.
"Well, well. Look what the wind blew in."
The familiar, arrogant voice made my stomach turn, but I turned around slowly, a calm smile plastered on my face.
Archer West stood a few feet away, holding a crystal glass of scotch. He was the star quarterback of the state university, heir to the West fortune, and my former boyfriend. Beside him, clinging to his arm in a tight silver dress, was my stepsister, Bella.
Archer’s eyes ran down my body, from the exposed collarbones down to the slit in my gown. A flicker of raw, unrestrained lust flashed across his face, instantly replaced by a bitter sneer.
"Sienna?" Archer gasped, his jaw practically hitting the marble floor. "What the hell happened to you?"
"She grew up, Archer," Chloe snapped, stepping forward with her arms crossed. "And she realized trash like you belongs in the dumpster."
"Shut up, Chloe," Bella hissed, her eyes burning with jealousy as she gripped Archer’s arm tighter. "She’s still the same pathetic loser underneath that dress. She probably starved herself for months just to get your attention, Arch."
Archer took a step toward me, ignoring Bella entirely. The cocky grin returned to his face as he reached out a hand, intending to grab my wrist. "Look at you, little mouse. I guess you missed me more than I thought. Is this dress an apology for being so boring when we dated?"
"Touch me, Archer, and I’ll break every finger on your throwing hand," I said softly, my voice dripping with lethal promises.
"You always had a big mouth when you were scared," Archer smirked, stepping closer, his breath reeking of bourbon. "Come on. Admit it. You dressed up like this to win me back."
He reached out to grab my arm—but before his fingers could even brush my skin, a suffocating, heavy pressure dropped over the entire room.
The air grew freezing cold. The ambient noise vanished instantly.
A heavy hand, adorned with a signet ring depicting a crowned wolf, shot out from the shadows and clamped around Archer’s wrist like a steel vise. A sickening crack echoed through the hall as Archer let out a sharp gasp of pain, forced down to his knees.
"You were told not to lay a finger on her, West," a deep, velvet voice growled from behind me.
My heart hammered against my ribs as I turned my head.
Kai King stood tall above us all.
He was six-foot-four of pure, lethal perfection. Dressed in a tailored black suit with his collar unbuttoned to reveal the intricate black ink of a wolf tattoo climbing up his neck, Kai looked less like a corporate heir and more like a apex predator inspecting his prey. His dark hair was brushed back, but it was his eyes—piercing, golden-amber, and flashing with absolute fury—that made the entire room hold its breath.
He was my stepbrother. The undisputed Alpha of the underground syndicate, the star striker of the national team, and the most dangerous man in Bel-Air.
"K-Kai!" Archer gasped, sweating profusely as Kai increased the pressure on his wrist. "Let go! It’s just a joke! We were just talking!"
"Does it look like I'm laughing?" Kai asked, his tone deathly quiet. He didn't even glance at Archer; his amber eyes were locked onto mine, burning through my defenses. "This girl lives under the King roof. Her blood, her body, and her name are protected by my family. Touch her again in my presence, and I won't just break your hand—I'll end your career."
With a flick of his arm, Kai shoved Archer back into a row of champagne towers. Glass shattered everywhere, sending champagne soaking across Archer's expensive suit and Bella’s dress. Bella screamed in embarrassment, but no one moved to help them. Security stood still, terrified of Kai's wrath.
"Get him out of my sight," Kai commanded smoothly, taking a linen handkerchief from his pocket and wiping his hands.
Two massive guards immediately dragged a groaning Archer and a sobbing Bella out the side exit.
The crowd stood frozen, terrified to break the silence. Kai turned his full attention toward me. The golden glow in his eyes faded back into a stormy dark brown, but the possessive intensity remained. He stepped close, his towering frame casting a shadow over me. The rich scent of cedarwood, leather, and rain engulfed my senses.
"You're late, Sienna," he murmured, his voice low enough that only I could hear.
"I don't operate on your schedule, Kai," I replied, holding my ground despite the electric shivers racing down my spine.
A dangerous, low chuckle rumbled in his chest. Without another word, his hand shot out, wrapping tightly around my waist. Before I could object, he pulled me flush against his hard chest, lifting me nearly off my feet as he turned and dragged me away from the stunned crowd toward the private elevators.
"Kai! Let me go!" I demanded under my breath, trying to pull away. "People are watching!"
"Let them watch," he growled, slamming his hand onto the top-floor button as the elevator doors slid shut, sealing us in complete isolation.
The elevator ascended rapidly, but the air inside was suffocatingly hot. Kai backed me against the mirrored wall, his towering frame blocking every avenue of escape. He placed both hands on the glass on either side of my head, trapping me in his space.
"What do you think you're doing?" I breathed, my chest heaving as I glared up at him.
Kai leaned down until his lips brushed against the shell of my ear, his hot breath making my blood run wild.
"You think putting on an expensive dress and playing victim hides what you really are, little sister?" Kai whispered, his fingers tracing a slow, burning path down my exposed shoulder. "You came back here looking for a fight. But you forgot one thing..."
His hand gripped my jaw, forcing me to look directly into his darkened eyes.
"...in this house, I make the rules. And you belong to me."
