The Trials of Raymond
Things have always been this way, my older brother Raymond makes a mess and good old Savannah is expected to swoop in and clean it up.
Ever since we were born, it has practically been written in stone, my twin brother would always be my problem. He would be the trouble maker he was born to be and I would have to be the good sibling who would have to suffer the consequences alongside him. Whether I liked it or not.
Having Raymond as a twin brother was basically like being born with an irresponsible forever man child I never even asked for.
Take tonight for instance. I'm supposed to be in my PJs, going through flash cards for my Zoology midterm on Monday with my bestfriend.
But instead, I'm cruising down the streets heading over to campus because my stupid brother and his even stupider best friend went to a frat party of their own accord and got too drunk to drive back home on their own.
So guess who has to pick them up?
Ding, ding, ding, Savannah is the lucky winner.
"Uh, Sav, you're going too fast." Rose speaks from the passenger seat. Through my periphery, I can see her adjusting her glasses and stepping on invisible brakes.
I huff. "Put on your seatbelt, Rose." Is all I say and I know she takes that as a sign to not question me any further.
My irritation is obvious and even though sweet Rose doesn't deserve even a fraction of my rage, I can't help but let it slip out
My eyes are on the task at hand and quite frankly, my fury won't allow any logic to seep in.
It's not long until we reach the Kappa Sigma Ro house where I imagine my brother passed out drunk on a couch somewhere.
I find a parking spot close enough that I don't have to drag two grown football players over but a good distance away so that some drunk i***t will ram into my car.
I get out of the vehicle and the electric energy is high as a loud rap song vibrates across the lawn.
I turn to Rose who looks as uncomfortable as I feel. We've been at Brookstone University almost two months now and the only party we've been to was the Freshman mixer.
Yeah, we're not the most social butterflies in the world.
"You okay splitting up to find these idiots?" I ask her.
Rose looks alarmed at the idea but I know she's trying not to add to my anger.
"Yeah, uhm sure." She says as she adjusts her glasses looking out of place.
I feel bad for even suggesting it but I know the quicker we find Raymond and Nolan, the quicker we can both get out of here.
I place my hands on her shoulders.
"Hey be strong, they're just frat boys. If any of them messes with you, kick them in the balls."
Rose cracks a smile and I see her relax thankfully. She tucks some of her red hair behind her ear.
"Okay, meet back here when we find them?" She asks.
I give her a mock salute.
"Got it chief."
Rose starts circling the yard asking about Raymond and Nolan's whereabouts while I turn and enter the house
The air is thick with the smell of smoke and spilled beer.
I stop short as a girl sprints in front of me crouched over to wrench her guts out into a potted plant.
I wrinkle my nose as I side step her.
Definitely not how I wanted to spend my Friday night.
I groan as I push past bodies.
I brush through sea of faces, aglow with excitement jumping around to the music. A group of guys are engrossed in conversation around a makeshift bar. But so far there's no sign of Raymond or Nolan.
I look around the frat house's enormous living room which is a whirlwind of color, the walls adorned with Greek letters and raucous banners that I'm shocked they actually let them hang up.
I'm just about to give up and let the two idiots fend for themselves. Poor Rose is probably caught up somewhere being uncomfortable.
I dodge an armpit about to face plant with my face and end up in the kitchen where there's at least a sense of stability amd calm. I step over discarded solo cups and finding clear spot by the fridge where I can take out my phone and text Rose asking her if she's having any luck.
"Hey, excuse me, beautiful?" I hear a deep voice call.
I look up and see a boy with a cap worn backwards grinning at me. I recognise him immediately as Scott, one of Raymond's teammates.
Scott had a stupid grin on his face and his eyes tell me he crossed the line of sobriety long ago.
"Sav? What are you doing at a party?" He yells unnecessarily loud not bothering to mask his shock even the slightest bit.
I let out a tired breath fighting the urge to slap myself. Or him. Mostly him.
"Where's my brother, Scott?"
Scott looks around seeming almost as lost as I am. And he lives here!
"Prolly somewhere." He speaks dismissively and very unhelpfully.
"Thanks." I speak blankly. I roll my eyes. What did I expect from a guy who holds the record for the most hot dogs you can eat in ten minutes?
I feel a hand pull me back and I look back to see Scott with a way too cheerful look on his face.
"Hold up, baby jones." I fight the irritation that swells in me the minute he uses the stupid nickname Raymond's team coined for me when they found out I was his twin sister.
I'm shocked when Scott backs me up against the kitchen counter, his face closer than you would want for comfort. I can smell the beer on his breath and I want to gag.
"You know I never noticed how kinda hot you are." He slurs.
Gross, is he hitting on me?
I pull my face away hoping Scott will get the hint but there's not many options for escape with the way he has me trapped.
Suddenly, I feel Scott get yanked away from me and I can't help but sigh in relief.
"Too close, Scotty." I hear a deep voice speak.
I look up and see one of God's favourite creations standing in front of me.
"Sav? What the hell are you doing here?" He asks coming closer to me. Did I mention that for whatever reason he is totally bare chested?
Nolan Charleston.
Or popularly known to the entire campus and my high school alumni; the Charleston canon.
Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award recipient. Home coming king. And of course, the boy who has been attached to my brother's hip since they met on the playground in kindergarten.
I swallowed as Nolan got closer.
You'd think I'd be used to seeing him shirtless considering we live together.
But no. He might be annoying but even I have to admit his abs are still a beauty to behold each and every time.
"Where's your shirt?" I snapped trying to sound like I wasn't fighting the urge to let my mind go straight to the gutter.
"I got beer on it, mum." He spoke innocently as he got closer.
Scott was long gone but the number of people crowding the kitchen seemed to increase. Meaning a tighter space and his half naked body closer than I would have liked.
Some drunk i***t shoved into him sending him lurching forward. He placed his hands on the sides of the counter so that he wouldn't crush me.
"Hey! Watch it!" He yelled before turning back to me.
"Uh, Nolan."
His chest was right in my face and I really shouldn't have been able to count the hairs stapled there.
"Oh crap. Hold on a sec." Before I could possibly comprehend what was going on, Nolan had his arms around my waist and hoisted me up to sit on the kitchen counter, his arms resting on either side of me casually.
"There you go." He spoke like the action had been nothing. "Feel safer?" He teased.
Heat crept up my neck and I'm pretty sure my heart has slipped a bit.
I shook my head and tried to pretend like I hadn't just literally been swept off my feet.
"Where's Raymond?" I asked changing the topic and zeroing in on the main reason I was actually here. "According to him, you're both supposed to be too drunk to function."
Nolan c****d his head, some hair spilling into his eyes making him look unbelievably cuter if that was even possible. Nolan was the kind of good looking guy who never had to be told because it was just a plain fact.
And he had spent most of high school capitalising off of that. And judging by the multiple girls he often brought home, I can tell you he spent most of college so far taking advantage of the fact as well.
"Oh yeah, we are definitely not okay to drive." He drawled before smirking. "Especially considering Ray lost his car keys."
My eyes widened. "What?"
Nolan gave me an innocent grin and I rolled my eyes realising the real reason Ray had me drive down here.
I pinched the bridge of my nose.
Great, just great. Another problem Raymond caused that I would have to handle.
"Yeah, okay, whatever." I spoke. "Can we just go already? This music is giving me a headache and I have to study."
"Alright captain Sav." Nolan spoke in a teasing tone as he stepped back to allow me some space.
I was just about to jump off the counter when his hands suddenly found my waist keeping me in place.
I looked at him in confusion, wondering what he was doing now but before I could even get any words out, I felt Nolan's lips crush onto mine.
I was stunned. But what was even more bizarre is that I was kissing back.
I was kissing back and I was enjoying it. I was kissing back my brother's best friend!
I was kissing Nolan Charleston and it felt good.
Nolan pulled back almost abruptly. My eyes were wide as I took in what had just happened but his were looking somewhere else completely.
He then turned to me, a look of relief on his face.
"Thanks Sav." He spoke.
I froze, confusion flooding my mind.
Wait. What just happened?
"That was a close one." He spoke in relief.
I blinked thinking I had inhaled too much smoke. Struck in utter confusion.
Nolan turned to look at me and seemed to read my expression. He quickly begun to explain.
"My ex, Nicole, she's been on my ass about getting back together all month. And you just helped me dodge a massive bullet."
He patted my shoulder. "Good looking out."
What the hell just happened?
