VARKON “Is she dead?” My driver, Draco queried behind me. “You should have thought about that before running her over.” I snapped at him, wincing at the way the rain battered my skin. “I apologize.” He pleaded. “I didn’t see her, Alpha. The rain was too heavy and…” “Enough.” I sighed as I crouched beside her and my gaze swept over her body. Killing a human was forbidden. Everyone except the Alpha faced a death penalty for something like this. It was why Draco shook like a leaf behind me. Her back was to me, so I turned her over and stilled at the sight of her scantily clad body. Draco cussed behind me, and I draped the trench coat over her at once, suddenly overwhelmed by a strange possessiveness. There was blood on her forehead and temples, and her clothes were extremely soaked from the rain. Her breathing was so faint, pulse too light, even to my werewolf hearing. I had to press a hand to her pulse just to be completely sure that she was still with us. I jerked my hand off as fast as I’d touched her, as a jolt of electricity passed through my skin. Confusion froze me at the spot, a deep frown etching my features. Draco whimpered, “Is she dead, Sir?” “Draco, shut up and pick her up, will you?” I lashed out with a shaky voice, getting up to my feet at once. Draco picked her up, oblivious to the tremor in my voice. “Where to, sir?” He asked with a hint of impatience in his voice. I took hasty steps towards the passenger’s side of the car, opening the door and climbing in first. “The nearest hospital.” I responded. Draco set her beside me after I’d settled in, hurriedly shutting the door. I glanced at the pale, beautiful woman beside me. Her head lolled to the side, dropping on my shoulder. I froze. Draco got into the front, starting the engine. “The car seats are going to be so wet…” He complained theatrically, like he wasn’t dying of nerves. Killing a human was bad. Killing a human in front of the Alpha, however… My wolf grew giddy inside me the more the female relaxed against me. The same electricity I’d felt coursed through my veins, and her rosy scent became ten times thicker in the confined car. My brain was trying to tell me something throughout the ride, but I continued to shut it off. It simply could not be. After letting my hands twitch for minutes un-end, I finally grabbed her head and pulled her to my lap. She fell to my thighs, limp. Her coat splayed open again, and I quickly covered her up for the second time. I stared up at Draco with urgency. “Move the car f*****g faster, Draco.” He stepped on the gas at once, doubling down on the speed. I glanced back down at her, my jaw clenching at the lethal beauty she possessed. I’d seen beautiful women in my life, and as corny as it sounded… there was something different about her. My fingers caressed her hair unconsciously. She could very easily become a distraction, I realized. If I was already this enamored by her in her unconsciousness, this woman could bring me to my knees. A human. She couldn’t be what I was thinking. The prophecy said the curse could only be broken by my fated mate, and that she was one of one. A very powerful being. And that I would know once I saw her. This girl on my lap… was as ordinary as they came. My wolf simply didn’t agree with me. He was viciously chanting, ‘ours’ and ‘claim her’ in my head. I tried to ignore his thrashing, and the way my claws shot out. The way my canines poked my tongue, making me taste blood. I couldn’t remember when my wolf had last been so out of control. The rain had reduced to drizzles by the time we got to the hospital. “Emergency!” I called out the moment I got down from the car. I carried the human in my arms. The staff in front of the building just stared at me like the hadn’t heard a word I’d said. These humans… “I said emergency! Get a stretcher or something, don’t just stand there and f*****g look.” I boomed, and they leaped away, rushing to get the stretcher I’d requested for. They whispered goddess-knew-what amongst themselves as they scampered away. Less than two minutes later, they rushed out with the stretcher and after a string of apologies, they took her from me and deposited her on the stretcher. “What’s her name, Sir?” One of the nurses asked, pulling out a pad to write. “Rose.” I spoke without thinking. I had no idea why I had said that either. “And you are?” “Her boyfriend.” She opened her mouth to ask me something else, but I shot her with a glare which had her mouth clamping shut. She turned around and raced into the building. I remained outside there, taking out a stick of cigar and slipping it between my lips. I lit it there, ignoring the side eyes and remarks. Normally, I would coordinate myself as the Alpha, but right now I couldn’t care less. I would be dead three months from now, anyway. They would have all the time they needed to judge my corpse. After minutes of waiting, I climbed into the back of my car and decided to wait there. A knock on the tinted glass woke me up from my exhaustion induced sleep. I opened one eye to see Draco knocking, and I sat up straight. Lowering the glass, I looked behind him, “Did she survive, Draco?” His lips tipped up in a smile. “She did. She’s awake right now, though not fully conscious, and she’s been blabbering since. She was given anesthesia.” I shouldn’t have gotten out of the car. What I should’ve done was breathe out a sigh of relief, then ask Draco to hop back into the car so we could head home. But I pushed the door open and hopped out of the car, following an excited Draco back into the hospital building. Just one last peek at her, I told myself. “Here.” Draco told me when we got to the private ward she’d been kept in. He bent the door handle, letting us in. A nurse stood beside her as she laughed her heart out. Her eyes landed on mine, and her cheeks turned crimson at once. My fist clenched on my side. If I had thought she was beautiful before, seeing her now, she was pure perfection. Her eyes were the most enchanting thing I’d seen. They were different. A blue orb on the left, and a gold one on the right. I’d lived long enough, but I hadn’t seen anything like it. “Are you… real?” I laughed lightly, “Technically, not really.” “Oh. You’re so handsome.” She gushed, and a flash of her distracting body in that lingerie earlier filled my mind. I shook my head, turning to the nurse, “Give him the bill.” I pointed to Draco. “Make sure she’s fully recovered before she leaves.” “No, don’t go, Mr Angel!” She called out to me, but I’d already slammed the door behind me, walking briskly towards the exit.
