Chapter 1
For the past couple of weeks, Tegan had felt as if she always had someone watching her. Tonight was no different as she was getting ready for bed. She didn’t quite understand why, though as she was in her bedroom, the curtains were drawn over her window so no one could see in. As she had been doing since the feeling started, she ignored the feeling as she took her hair out of the towel that it was drying in and pulled on a long sleeve shirt and a pair of shorts and laid down to go to sleep. She lay listening to the wind gust against the house for quite a while before she was finally able to fall asleep. Unbeknownst to her, the window was not locked. She had not been locking it for quite some time now. From outside her window, a black-haired, blue-eyed man sat on a tree branch that was a little distance from her house. Although the curtain was mostly blocking his view, he could still see through the small c***k that was left open and he could hear her breathing and movement. When it became deep and steady, he knew that she had finally fallen asleep. His feet silently hit the ground as he jumped from the branch that he was sitting on. His movement was not visible to the human eye as he suddenly appeared across the yard where he started to climb up the side of the house to the girls' second story window. He knew that the window was not locked, it was the one that she had been allowing him to sneak through for months now, but she would not remember that. Once on the roof of the first story, he made his way over to where her window was, and slowly opened it.  A gust of wind blew open the curtains, causing Tegan to shiver. She had pulled her blankets closer and snuggled into them to get more warmth. The man stalked closer to her, not wanting to make any noise, so that he did not wake her up. From beside her bed, he watched her, making sure that she was deep in sleep. He leaned down and gently stroked a lock of hair in front of her face. When she leaned into his touch, he smirked. The girl knew that she could trust him. Feeling more confident that she would not wake, he gently lifted her chin to look at her face. “Sweet, innocent, little human,” he whispered. His judgement of doing this was not good, as his eyes fluttered open tiredly. “Who are you?” she muttered as she tried to keep her eyes open. She was clearly confused but sleep was in her voice as well, threatening to pull her back under. The man didn’t say anything as he backed away from her, the smile still on his face. Tegan blinked, trying not to fall back asleep, but when her eyes opened back up, the man had disappeared, her window closed as she had left it. She was still very confused, but sleep pulled her back under. The next morning, Tegan woke up to her alarm blaring. She quickly shut it off so it would not wake her father before she began getting ready for school. It was her senior year and she only had a few months left before she was free from the hell of public education. After taking her shower and getting dressed, she collected her bag and quietly exited the house and began the walk to school. The whole walk she felt as if she were being watched by someone, the same nagging feeling that she had been having for so long. She tried her best to ignore it as she went about her day, but never once did it go away. She never once related the feeling to what she thought was a dream that she had the night before. The day had gone as school days normally would. Getting sent to the office because she was talking to her best friend, Sara, instead of paying attention to chemistry. The office only sent her right back to class because they didn’t really care much that she was just talking. When her classes were finally over, she began her walk back home, dreading what was to come if her father were to be home when she got there. He had been laid off from work for a couple of weeks now and was praying for him to come back at any time. She walked slowly, taking as long as possible so she would not have to face him. When she came in view of the house, she sighed at the sight of her father’s truck in the driveway. She walked in through the front door, closing it as quietly as possible to not draw attention to herself. She could already smell the alcohol as she stepped into the hallway, hoping to make it straight up to her room before he had the chance to stop her. She began to quietly climb the stairs, but the third step creaked under her weight. “Tegan?” Her father yelled. She heard him stand in the other room and walk towards the hallway. “Where the hell have you been?” She saw that the bottle of whiskey in his had been nearly completely gone when he stood in front of her at the bottom of the stairs. Drinking was a habit that he had picked up ever since his mother lost her battle with breast cancer just a couple of years before. “I was at school,” she told him, her voice shaking, but she tried to hide it. “You should have been back ten minutes ago,” her father seethed. She didn’t even see his movement, but she felt the hot stinging sensation that quickly spread across her cheek as she realized that he had slapped her. “Where the f**k were you?” He asked her once again. “I… I was walking home from school,” she said as she held her cheek, trying to stop the tears that were threatening to spill from her eyes. She knew that if he saw her crying, it would only make things worse for her. He had raised his hand to his hers again, but she saw it this time, taking another step up the stairs to avoid it. His attempt fell short, which only made him angrier. “You had better get your ass to your room,” he snapped. Before he even had the chance to run after her, Tegan took off up the stairs and into her room, where she quickly shut and locked the door. Once locked in her room, the tears started to run down her cheeks. This has become at least a weekly occurrence now. She dropped her bag by the door as she walked over to her bed and lied down on it, burying her face in her pillow. She lay there for hours, not moving as she was afraid her father would get mad at her for making any noises. After what seemed like an eternity, she fell into a troubled sleep filled with nightmares about her father. The dark-haired man had been watching Tegan through the window again. He had heard the altercation from his perch in the tree of their yard. The girl’s father had been doing this to her for months, however, causing her anxiety about just coming home because she didn’t know whether he would be home or out at the bar. The days that he was out at the bar were much easier for her as she was able to go straight to her room and avoid him when he returned home. He watched the girl through her window for a while, listening for her to fall asleep. He wanted to get her out of the situation, he needed to get her out of the situation. There had been very few times that her father had laid his hands on her, but it had become more frequent in recent weeks and he no longer wanted to wait for her to make the choice to leave on her own.  Once he had seen that she had fallen asleep, he snuck in through one of the first-floor windows. By this time, Tegan’s father had fallen asleep as well, but in one of the living room chairs, the bottle of whiskey now empty in his hand. He wanted to kill the bastard for hurting his daughter the way he did, but he didn’t want to lose his chance of getting her out tonight. He quietly made his way up the stairs and to her room only to find that she had locked it. He sighed, knowing that he should have expected her to lock the door. She did so every time that her father did that. He quickly made his way back outside and up to the room that led to her window. He quietly opened the window before climbing into her room. Her cheek had already become very red with hints of purple starting to show. He carefully picked her up, one arm under her knees and the other supporting her back, and held her close to his chest. He was careful as he carried her out through the window and disappeared with her into the woods. She had started to stir a little in her sleep as the man carried her through the woods until they eventually were walking on a sidewalk. She had opened her eyes slightly, asleep, trying to keep her from doing so. “Who are you?” She muttered, immediately believing that she was having a dream about the man again. The man looked down at her and smiled softly. “Shh, just go back to sleep, dear,” he told her as he continued to walk down the street. They were not much further from the house now. “Where are we going?” she pressed on as she tried to look around to get an idea of what was going on, although she still believed that what was happening was still just a dream. “Somewhere where you will be safe. Now I need you to go back to sleep,” his voice was soft and gentle as he spoke to her. It didn’t take very long before she had fallen back to sleep. The man kept walking, carrying her carefully so he didn’t drop her. After a couple more minutes, he rounded a corner and was in front of a very large house, one that many people might call a mansion. He carried her into the house and upstairs to one of the many bedrooms where he laid her down on the bed, allowing her to sleep.
