Elara Voss was rejected under the full moon by her fated mate, Alpha Kael Thorn. Publicly humiliated and called wolf-less, she was left broken in front of the entire pack.  But the rejection awakened something ancient inside her — a powerful silver wolf named Nyx who had been hiding for years.  While the pack moves on with a new Luna, Elara trains in secret, rising from the ashes of her pain. She becomes the strongest warrior Blackridge has ever seen… until the night her parents are murdered under mysterious circumstances.  Betrayed by the pack she protected, Elara walks away.  What she doesn’t know is that her grief has placed her directly in the path of a much darker force — and the Alpha who once rejected her is beginning to realize he made the biggest mistake of his life.

chapter One
The rejection came under a full moon. Alpha Kael Thorn stood in the center of the pack circle, tall and unmoving. His eyes, once warm when they looked at her, were now cold as winter steel. His voice carried across every wolf present, sharp and final. “I, Kael Thorn, Alpha of Blackridge Pack, reject you, Elara Voss, as my mate.” The words hit like a physical blow. The mate bond snapped. Pain tore through Elara’s chest with such force that a broken cry escaped her lips before she could stop it. She dropped hard onto the packed dirt, gasping, hands clawing at the ground. It felt as if something living had been ripped out of her by the roots. Her vision blurred. Her lungs refused to work. For a terrifying moment she thought she might die right there in front of everyone. No one moved to help her. Kael’s new chosen, Seraphine, stood at his side in a deep red dress. Her expression was soft, almost pitying — but her eyes shone with quiet victory. Whispers rose immediately. “She never even shifted…” “Wolf-less.” “What a waste of a bond.” “The Alpha was right to reject her.” Elara forced air into her lungs. Tears burned at the corners of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She would not give them the satisfaction of seeing her completely shatter. Slowly, she lifted her head. Kael was already turning away. Yet for the briefest second, his steps hesitated. His jaw tightened. Something dark and painful flashed across his face before he locked it away. He did not look back. “I accept your rejection,” Elara said. Her voice came out hoarse and cracked, but steady. The entire circle heard it. A few wolves flinched. Most simply looked away in discomfort. Seraphine’s smile widened just slightly before she lowered her eyes in false sympathy. Elara stayed on her knees until the last of the pack began to disperse. Only when the clearing was nearly empty did she push herself upright. Her legs shook violently. Blood stained her palms where her nails had dug deep. She wiped them against her pants and stood still, staring at the place where Kael had stood. The pain in her chest was still screaming. ‘Rise.’ The voice inside her mind was low, ancient, and female. It did not belong to any ordinary wolf. Elara froze. “Who…?” ‘I am Nyx. And I have waited long enough.’ A flash of silver light moved behind her eyes — cold, powerful, and gone in less than a heartbeat. The presence settled deep in the back of her mind, heavy and watchful, like a predator that had finally opened its eyes. Elara’s breath caught. For years she had been told she was broken. Wolf-less. Incomplete. The entire pack had treated her as something less. Even her own parents had worried in silence, though they never said the words aloud. Now something vast and old lived inside her. She turned and walked toward the tree line. Every step hurts. The broken bond still throbbed like an open wound, but she kept moving. She would not collapse again in front of anyone. Behind her, a few remaining warriors watched with open pity. She ignored them. The forest closed around her. Cool night air touched her face. The moon hung full and bright above the canopy, silver light filtering through the leaves. Elara stopped beside an old oak and finally allowed herself to break. She pressed her forehead against the rough bark and sobbed — quiet, raw, and painful. The sound tore from her throat in broken waves. She had loved him. Even when he grew distant. Even when he chose another. A part of her had still hoped. That hope is gone now. ‘They think you are weak,’ Nyx said softly. “I know,” Elara whispered through tears. ‘They are wrong.’ Elara closed her eyes, tears still falling. “Why did you hide all this time?” ‘Because the moment they knew what you carried, they would have tried to control it… or kill it. I protected us both.’ The truth settled heavily in her chest. Her parents had always believed she would shift one day. They had never stopped hoping. Tonight, when the rejection came, they had stood at the edge of the circle, faces pale with shared pain. They had not been allowed to approach her. Pack law forbade interference during a formal rejection. She would have to face them soon. She did not know what she would say. Elara pushed away from the tree and straightened. Her hands still trembled, and her eyes were red, but her spine was steady. They thought the rejection had broken her. They thought she would fade quietly into the background, a rejected wolf without a wolf. They were wrong. She wiped the last of the tears and blood from her face and looked up at the moon. “I will not stay weak,” she whispered. Nyx’s presence stirred, ancient and pleased. ‘Good. Then we begin.’ Elara turned deeper into the forest. Every step carried her farther from the pack that had just watched her shatter. The pain of the broken bond still burned, but beneath it something colder and stronger had awakened. Somewhere behind her, standing in the shadows of the pack house, Alpha Kael watched her disappear into the trees. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides. His wolf snarled restlessly inside him, furious and confused. He had done the right thing. He was sure of it. So why did it feel like he had just made the biggest mistake of his life?
