Chapter 2

1449 Words
That afternoon, the alphas and their Lunas gathered in the meeting room together with their betas as they met with the king. He was addressing the recent evil that the watchers had just averted and was also commending alpha Duncan and Alpha Karina for standing with the watchers to defeat the dark alpha. Although the watchers have given him a detailed report, explaining the whole sordid plans of the evil alpha, and how he was defeated. The king asked the affected alphas if they wanted to add anything about how their packs fell. To everyone’s surprise, both alphas were certain that insiders were involved. They were marvelled at how much alpha Titus had silently achieved. “Well, it is a good thing that both the dreadful alpha and his loyalist have been obliterated from our kind. However, I will keep a closer eye on all the packs within my kingdom to make sure that none suffers such fate again.” After everyone in the room agreed that it was a good idea, the king moved the discussion towards another pressing issue. He wanted to divide the packs whose alphas had fallen with the dark alpha. This is because a pack without a proper leader will soon become unruly. The animal instinct in them will surely take over. “I have visited the packs whose leaders fell with the dark alpha, and we cannot leave them in their current state. I am sure you all know what will happen when beasts have no authority to submit to.” “We can divide the members into other packs.” Suggested alpha Alex. The king listened as his alphas voiced more suggestions, and in the end, they agreed to integrate these packs into others. This was exactly what he had in mind and was glad that everyone agreed, but he had the mind to reward someone else. One out of the four packs bordered the full moon pack to the south and so they integrated it into the full moon pack. Two others followed and the fourth, which shared a border with alpha Duncan, was merged with the crescent moon pack. While alpha Duncan was having an internal conversation with himself if to accept the added responsibility or not, his Luna was ecstatic. “That leaves the dark moon pack and the third pack that fell to their brutality.” The king had thought long and hard about these two packs. The alpha of the third pack was young and had no child, likewise his beta. This pack was located right in-between alpha Karina and alpha Duncan’s pack, and she would have been the best alpha to hand this pack over to. “Alpha Karina, you are yet to tell me what you intend to do with your pack when you move to the vampire’s territory.” Said the king. “I will not be moving to my mate’s territory.” Was her stunning response. Everyone in the room turned an astonished look towards her, because it was simply impossible to leave without one’s mate. Alpha Karina ignored the looks she was getting. She had wanted to speak to the king in private concerning the problem with her mate, but the thought of having her pack given away had made her speak up here. “In that case, will you be willing to take on your neighbouring pack?” The king asked, knowing that they will need to have a private conversation. “Not a problem,” she responded. “This leaves us with just the dark moon pack, and it will not be integrated into any other pack. I intend to give this pack to a new alpha.” Everyone in the room knew who he meant. Since the fight that saw the defeat of the dark alpha, the aura that surrounds Jack has changed from that of a beta to an alpha. This is because he had slain an alpha during that fight. The other alphas voiced their agreement, and an alpha ceremony for him was fixed for the next full moon. However, Jack declined. Stating that he cannot lead a pack that does not have a Luna, but the king insisted. In the end, the dark moon pack was placed under the guardianship of the full moon pack pending when a final decision will be made. ********** While the meeting was going on, April laid in her bed, drifting in and out of thoughts for most of that afternoon. She knew she really needed to get her act together, but she did not know how to do so. Not once have she heard of or seen anyone who was rejected. She did not know who to turn to for guidance. Telling her family was out of the question, as she did not want a forced mate. Her mind went back to her conversation with Talia earlier, and she knew the other female was right. She needed to break the bond between her and Duncan by accepting his rejection. But that means confronting him. She was not ready to do that, but that was the only way to set herself free from all these emotional, physical, and psychological pains. Summoning as much courage as she could, she went into her bathroom and ran a bath. The soothing fragrance of her scent calmed her frayed nerves, and after about half an hour of soaking away her worries, she stepped out and got dressed. She thought it best not to apply any makeup as she was headed out to reject her mate. This is just in case the dam behind her eyes broke again. Touching her lips with a hint of a nude lip gloss, she went in search of the only male she was trying to avoid. Luck must be on her side because just as the building the meeting was being held came into view, she saw the leaders coming out. Fresh wave of pain washed over her when she saw alpha Duncan and her replacement walking out of the building together with alpha Karina. That should be me, April agonised in her heart. He must have sensed her presence, because he turned and locked eyes with her. He excused himself from the ladies he was with and walked towards April. The powerful scent of freshly juiced apple mixed with warm honey coming from her made him want to lick her from head to toes. With his eyes pinned to hers, he was not paying attention to the path he was walking. He struck his right foot against a stone and almost went tumbling down. April stood her ground and allowed him to come to her. “Hello alpha.” She greeted in a steady voice. Alpha Duncan just stood there, staring at her. Before now, he had only seen her at night, but seeing her now during the day almost had him salivating. All he could think to himself was “wow.” “Please, can we talk in private?” She said when Duncan did not respond to her greeting. April noticed his wolf was threatening to take over and knew this may cause a scene if he succeeds. So, she reached out and took his right hand. Her touch instantly calmed Idris, and this gave Duncan the opening he needed to shut his wolf out. “Time and place?” “The main garden, after dinner. Just follow the tulips. They will lead you to a place where we can talk privately.” She turned and walked away without waiting for his response. Alpha Duncan stood there and watched her walk away. He felt apprehensive about meeting with her in private. It was difficult enough to be around her in public. Now he was setting himself up for a private meeting with her. At night. He did not turn around until she disappeared from his sight. When he did, the gloomy look on Lily’s face told him he was in for another long night. But he was too bothered to care, because he was more worried about his reaction to April. That he forgot about Lily the moment he felt her presence added to his fears, and not only did he feel her presence, but he could also pick up her scent. His face was drawn taut and void of any form of emotion by the time he walked back to Lily. But she was not ready to let what just happened slide. Her face was set in a rigid frown as they went back to their room. “Would you like to kick me out and start f*****g April?” Lily asked in an icy voice.
