Chapter 3

1058 Words
During dinner that evening, April had been unable to eat a bite. She kept poking at her food. After a few minutes of pushing the food around on her plate, she excused herself and went back to her room. “I told you something was wrong with her. She has not been her usual self for about a month now.” Her mother said in a low voice. The former Luna, Abigail, has noticed the change in her daughter. The once carefree girl seems to have been replaced by a silent and moody version of herself. The ever-present twinkle she normally had in her eyes and her sunny outlook on life has suddenly varnished. She knew something was not right and had tried her best to talk to her. It pained her that April could be going through something challenging enough to change her personality and yet not be able to confide in her.   Alpha Alex sensed his wife’s frustration even before she dropped her own cutleries. He knew what it was that had her in such an agitated mood. The both of them have tried to reach out to April, but she seems to be withdrawing more and more into herself. “Maybe we can have her brother talk to her, see if he can find out what this is all about.” He suggested. Abigail was clearing out the table when April came back downstairs and informed them that she was heading to the pack house. Just then, someone knocked on their door and her father went to answer it. “It’s for you April.” She heard him call out to her. She walked towards the front door, thinking her mate had come to her house instead. The look of trepidation on her face made her mom drop the dishes she was holding and followed her. She was surprised, relieved, and a little disappointed to find Darius at the door. “The king and queen would like to speak with your daughter.” April heard him say to her father. “Why?” she asked before her father could respond. “I do not know the reason why they requested for your presence, but they did say your parents were to come too.” April looked at the clock, ‘this cannot be happening’ she thought to herself. She had to meet with Duncan in less than ten minutes, but she knew it was impossible to refuse the king’s summon.        ******* Alpha Duncan went straight to the garden after dinner. The bed of tulips was the only thing he looked around for. There is a secluded spot at the end of the row. He instinctively knew it was his meeting point with April. After half an hour, he grew angry and left. ‘She can’t even be trusted to keep her own words.’ He thought. He saw her hurrying towards him as he got closer to the pack house, but ignored her. Instead, he walked into the building and went straight to Lily. He whispered into her ears that they need to go to bed, and also sent a mind-link to Blake reminding him of their early departure the next morning. When they got to the room, he did his best to keep April out of his thoughts and concentrated all his attention on his girlfriend.   Lily snuggled into his arms when they climbed into bed. She wanted to make up for their fight about April. She knew she should not have flared up like she did, but the other female was getting on her nerves. Ever since they arrived at this pack alpha Duncan seems to have changed into somebody else. He was has not being passionate or affectionate towards her, and was always staring at April whenever they ran into her. At a point Lily thought April might be Duncan’s mate, but when her lover said nothing of such and she also did not confront them, Lily concluded they were not mates. Turning around to face Duncan, she placed a soft kiss on his lips as she slide a hand inside his pyjama trouser.      April felt the pain hit her just as she stepped into her room. She has grown accustomed to in the last three weeks and knew the source. She knew also that it will only get worse as it spreads from the pit of her stomach until it reaches her heart. Staggering into her bathroom, she took two small towels and soaked them in cold water. She placed one on her stomach and the other on her chest and waited for the pain to run its course. The first time she experienced this pain had been the worse. After it happened for the third time in one day, she had run to Mrs Smith, the pack doctor. The older woman had looked at her with so much love and sympathy, and then explained that the pain was because of her mate being with someone else. From that day, there was hardly a day that went by that she did not feel this excruciating pain. The only way to free herself was to reject him.            **********   While all these were happening, the watchers were gathered in alpha Axel’s office. They were trying to make sense of the eerie feeling that each of them was having. The first to have complained about it was Mimi. She had jolted out of her sleep two nights ago with the feeling that something was wrong. However, when she mentioned it to Talia, she was surprised to find out her friend had been living with that feeling since their battle with the dark alpha. “I do not want to sound like a killjoy, but I think we have only stirred the hornets’ nest.” Talia said. “But we killed both father and daughter, including Lyann and their high priestess. What other evil could be out there that is worse than them?” Mimi asked. “We may yet connect this to the rising of the pink moon, but we need to go out there and sniff it out before it finds us.” Prince Calum said, looking from one watcher to the other. “We need to go back to the oracle.” Was all alpha Axel said, and the others agreed with him.
